As a Catholic, I have to say. Not all Mormons, nor their missionaries are bad. Just like not all Catholics, nor the Catholic Church is all bad. While we may differ theologically, I believe as a whole, we all agree that respect for another faith’s worship space is extremely important. There is no way for a Catholic to explain to someone of another faith how important and sacred these things are, just like they wouldn’t be able to explain theirs to a Catholic. We need to remember, this story is just now breaking. I am sure there are alot of details yet to come. Although, based on what is out there already, it doesn’t look good, we need to keep an open mind. We need to forgive. Forgiving does not mean forgetting, but we really need to focus on the forgiveness aspect.
This is so true. And I need to remind the mormon church haters on this thread that I have read posts in this section of the forum where lds temple garments are mocked and scoffed at. And for the lds, these garments are sacred. Any comments from the lds critics? 😊

And lets read this one again:

Helping Hands Day, 30 June, Sunbury–A Success!

A big THANK YOU to everyone who came to Helping Hands Day at the Sunbury-on-Thames project! It took place at St Pauls Catholic College and was attended by 150 Mormon church members, community and friends. The Mayor of Spelthorne came with his wife to open the day of service and was impressed with the teenagers, children and adults who painted four corridors, a girl’s toilet room, 6 classrooms, pruned trees and cleared nearly 200 sq metres of overgrowth in just a few hours!

The premises managers were on site and had this to say, “what a pleasure it was working with such a lovely bunch of people. You have helped uplift two areas within the college for which we grateful and I am sure the students will be as well.” The Mayor also mentioned how refreshing it was to see teenagers willing to donate a Saturday to a service project. He hopes more young people will follow the example of the volunteers and feel a part of their community.

It was great to see members of different faiths work together to give much needed help to the college. The transformation was amazing to see. It was about giving back to the community and sharing skills and time for a worthy cause. The volunteers are looking forward to next year’s project. We hope you will be able to join us!

Here are the details of the event:

Once a year a Helping Hands Day project in the Surrey area is chosen to benefit and strengthen the community by working together. This year our project is going to be taking place at Sunbury-on-Thames at St Pauls Catholic College TW16 6NX

St Pauls has 1100 students attending from year 7-11 studying technology and sciences. The college is in desperate need for help to refurbish the existing facilities and provide a neat working environment on it’s beautiful campus, which means a bit of painting and cutting back some overgrowth.

All you need to bring is a picnic lunch, clothes to paint in and a smile! We hope to see you there, feel free to ask any questions.

Helping Hands Day: 30 June, 2007 from 10:00-3:00.

Much thanks,

Helping Hands Day

This is what I have been saying all along. Such cooperation is christian-like. 🙂

Yes, I’ll take a page from your book… Let he who is without sin cast the first stone! 😛

And lets face it, the lds church has apologized. The missionaries will experience church discipline and the law. I think that this is the end of the story.
Church discipline. LOL! These boys were allowed to finish their mission despite this lousy behavior. Church discipline is for people like me, who disagree with the brethren and dare to speak up.

This man had a bit of church discipline simply for writing a letter to the editor. I doubt there’s one Catholic in the world who would lose his job, not to mention his membership in the Catholic church, simply for holding opinions that differ from the official Catholic church positions.

These boys were doing this two years ago and the church DID cover it up. It already happened. They were allowed to serve their missions. They are probably now married and in family wards. What is the church going to do? Nothing, most likely. Church discipline does not apply to committing crimes against those of other faiths. It is solely to punish those who commit crimes against other Mormons.

Again, in the Mormon mindset, it is acceptable to abuse those of other faiths. It is O.K. to commit people and property crimes, and it is fine to lie to those of other faiths. Your behavior here on this forum is proof enough of this, and I appreciate you serving as a living example of the sort of pathological behavior that I find loathsome and embarassing whenever my own religious preference comes up.

It’s tiring to live my life being forced to apologize for trash like these missionaries and for the same quality of trash that covers up for for this type of inbred human garbage.

LaMar, after reading those articles, I feel kind of sad. I mean, the one was his point of view and the other was an open attack against everything he said. I am interested to know if things like this are a common occurrence?

Also, did the LDS church really know about it and cover it up, or did the guys responsible cover it up until they posted the pictures?

Missionaries travel in twos. There are three people charged, with at least one witness who probably snapped the photos.

There are other RMs here (people who went on LDS missions) and I’m sure, if they’re honest, they’ll admit that their missions were filled with boasting about things like this. I have no doubt that this escapade was talked about throughout the area, with other missionaries laughing about it and the local leaders knowing about it and doing nothing to stop it.

As a Mormon from Utah, I’ll be the first to admit that my behavior wasn’t all it was supposed to be. There’s a certain callous degeneracy that’s bred into kids in our society, fostered with little psychological teachings. We grew up saying things like “I have more authority in my pinky finger than the Pope ever will”. This is the sort of attitude that encourages anti-social behavior.

Yes, Mormons live in fear of being caught saying something publicly which might be seen as countering the teachings of the prophet. It is sadly very common for people to be excommunicated for simply holding different opinions. Once excommunicated, the individual may be fired and his/her spouse is often counseled by local leaders to divorce him or her, in favor of someone “worthy”.

The LDS church has much more in common with Scientology than it does with any Christian religion. By that I don’t mean we have a similar theology, but both of these religions are very cult like and people are expected to act as a block, with very serious punishments for any difference of opinion.

The lds church knew nothing about it. Three missionaries had a ‘good’ time and then posted the pictures after their missions. They are now being punished for their behavior. One was still serving his mission and he has been sent home.

Proof please. It seems your antimormonism is getting the best of you. 🙂

you asking for proof? that’s rich. where is your evidence on the position of the catholic church regarding the aztecs? the baltic states? where are the pictures of these catholics mocking garments that would equate to these missionaries? these guys were on a full time mission they can’t just “roam around”. where were their leaders, ZL, DL, MP, ward misison leader, bishop, etc.? they were obviously not out on their P day so they were “on the clock” so to speak.

You who claim to be all active catholic continue not only to defend their actions but you are on both boards instigating attacks on catholics. your actions have revealed your true intent. no one is fooled

I hate to be a party pooper here but when a person looks at history one would find a vibrant Aztec culture vandalized for church and Spain. I do believe that on a scale of 1 to 10 that would be a 10 for sure since an entire culture was destroyed. And need I mention pagan lithuania and pagan latvia and what happened in those countries when the Catholic church arrived with its missionaries?

Let those without sin cast the first stone…:o
Again how Mormons have spun this to them being the victims and the CC being a monster is really amazing, I’ve read about rapist priests, the inquisition, the Crusades, the conquest of South America. It’s amusing to watch…

The Aztecs terrorized the native people surrounding the areas, their people were enslaved, murdered in mass sacrifices and eaten. No one in the area was too upset to see “Aztec culture” go away except for the powerful aztecs. And most of Latin and South America still did not convert until 5 million converted on the appearance of the Virgin Mary to Juan Diego.

Look at Ireland the entire place was converted with no bloodshed at all yet basically nothing remains of their pagan past at all aside from a few artifacts and sites that no one even knows what they were used for.

Only because he committed a sin against the mormon 11th commandment…thou shalt not commit publicity.

Your madb friends cover this quite thoroughly, lamenting the fact that this is bad press for your church, and poor church will now be persecuted because of the bad press.

Pathetic.

French Jesuits did the same in 17th century North America.

😃 Excellent point. Maybe the Spanish Conquistadores were only superficially converted from Islam. Big contrast.

Guadalupe could have been the sign that Bartolome de las Casas was looking for to tell him to stop the abuses.

You need to ask the Aztecs if you can find any…🙂
why me,

To get an idea of the Aztec culture and why it is a good thing the Catholic missionaries got there when they did, watch the DVD “Apocalypto”. It may change your perspective.

The rumor of Mormons thinking they are “superior” of others is not true. I have been raised to respect other religions and treat all people good and fairly. The above is just one false example of what is being used to downgrade religions. All religions have the same right to worship as they may. I met some of the finest people and they were Catholics in Brazil!

If any mormon said what you claimed she had said, I can honestly say that she wasn’t a mormon except in name only. I have never heard of any anticatholicism while I was or have been attending lds meetings. Mormons do not hate catholics.
I guess I better go check with my spouse to see if I was lied to. I mean we have only been married for 26 years, maybe it was all made up just to get me to feel bad about our friend, right? I don’t think my spouse made it up at all.

In fact my spouse and I still talk about those comments even though a couple of years have gone by. Why would a mormon say such a thing to us if there wasn’t some truth behind it?

How about people get back on topic? This incident has NOTHING to do with Aztecs, Ireland, Baltic States. , etc. etc. etc. Mormons do things wrong, Catholics do things wrong. You don’t need to be a brain surgeon to figure that out. What happened to Christian compassion? A bad incident happened. The LDS has apologized, and is going to deal with the issues according to their rules/regulations etc. We as Catholics should be Christian enough, and gracious enough to accept that apology. It is also wrong to come into any religous forum to bad mouth another religion. Civil discussions concerning the differences between different religions is good, but the snide and sniping comments don’t get anyone anywhere.
God Bless!!!

As we know, there are bad apples in every tree or “religion” Let us move forward and progress rather than regress. Have a great day!
