teancum has yet to give much evidence for any of his assertions. he freely admits to not having really studied much on the topics being discussed and chooses to ignore all evidence presented by others. this is all too common with mormons who, having been inculcated from toddler age with a “testimony” just choose to “believe” and figure anything that contradicts that belief must be wrong because it’s “anti-mormom” and everything will be explained in the after life… I fear for their explanation then. I pray God will be merciful and forgive them.
excuse me?

Where is the evidence that I ignore all evidence presented?

Not falling down and worshiping at the golden calf of some peoples ignorance is not ignoring evidence.

We do needs God forgiveness for many things, but not for following Him.

pretty much every post you made in response to evidence presented.

the bible shows us by example that polygamy was problematic for abraham AND David. that it was so bad as to require a prophet to come and tell him so is more attributable to the poor standards at that time. David had not only committed adultery but had murdered a man to cover it up and worse he had abused his authority as king to force others into complicity with this act. notice that Jesus comes LATER and presents a HIGHER law on marriage. jesus tells us that under the old covenant divorce was permitted. (not by God but by moses) now he teaches us not to do that. he goes on to explain the nature of sacramental marriage.

Yes it is a higher law to not have divorce, but Davids big sins where not directly connected to his having more than one wife. If he had only one wife the same events could have taken place (though the story but which David convicted himself would have been a tad different). Neither Abraham nor Israel’s wives had such major problems as to suggest that the practice could not have been approved by God.

i have to disagree on both abraham (whose firstborn son was exiled and cursed ) and israel (incest, one son sold into slavery by the others, etc.) Take out bathsheba and david still has a “jerry springer” family with incest and violent rebellion. just because a prophet doesn’t write scripture stating that polygamy in this case is bad doesn’t mean god approved. i see no biblical evidence for anything other than tolerance for it. even then i find it significant that the plethora of family troubles resulting from it are there.

All sorts of people had family troubles Jacob and Esau. If we assume that family troubles are a result of plural marriage than a great many most of the OT guys had more than one wife including Adam and Moses. After all having one kid killing another or having your brother help the people to worship a false God can’t be good.

true BUT many of the most disturbing family problems that abraham, israel and david had were the direct result of polygamy. nowhere do we see god commanding polygamy nor do we see him blessing them as a direct result of the polygamy. all we see is the heartache and strife it caused. ishmael and haggar, rachel and leah who then drug in the “handmaids”, rueben, amnon and tamar, absalon, joseph and his brothers

There where some problems, but there where also many blessings. We have neither a direct command nor a forbidding of the practice in regards to these people.

what blessings are directly attributable to the polygamy? as to absence of specific forbidding of the practice…i think it’s the slothful servant who must be commanded in all things.😃

The lineage of Adam from Seth, the first to be born in his father’s image and the first to invoke YHWH.

This is the lineage that produced the first 12 patriarch’s who’s life mission was to make God’s Salvation visible.

This line begins with an explicit description of one man and one wife. The line ends notably with an explicit description of one man with one wife. This is obviously a literary tool to describe this line’s composition of marriage.

The marriages in Cain’s line are not described explicitely as having one man and one wife. In the middle of the line of Cain is first man to have two wives

Lamech is also described as a man who takes vengence to it’s fullest possible manifestation. His only recorded communication with his wives is a dire warning to beware of his vengefullness.

The purpose of the passage that includes the first polygamous marriage is to describe the increasing sin in man. Seventy times sevenfold vengence taken for Lamech.

Genesis 6…The sons of God are seduced by the daughters of men to what? ‘they took as many as they chose’

The sons of God: Seth is first man born in his father’s image and the first to invoke God. Persuasive evidence for who the sons of God are.

The daughters of men: A wording that would effectively describe a culture that is matriarchal.

Cain’s line explicitely polygamous.

Seth’s line explicitely monogamous.

These are the two first born’s of Adam and of Eve. There are enmities between them. One is described as a tempter the other as suffering a fall by some of it’s members because of the temptation. This fall shows that taking as many wives as one chooses is not an acceptable means of obeying God’s command to multiply…

This theme runs throughout the lives of the People of God. The matriarchal cultures engage in deceptions against the People of God when Balaam teaches Balaak how to decieve the Israelites. Again the daughters of men seduce the sons of God by appealing to an urge to reproduce that is unnatural to man.

When Jesus taught about divorce he pointed our minds to Genesis. Genesis describes two forms of marriage and Jesus points out one as the way it was in the beginning. Divorce is an intrinsic part of polygamous marriage because it can also be described; "and the sons of God seeing that the daughters of men were comely took as many as they chose’

The lives of the People of God reveal that two become one and adding another doesn’t add to that oneness but divides it.

I’ve seen this kind of defense of polygyny from many LDS on many different boards. I find this defense combined with the LDS prophet in interviews saying “we have nothing to do with polygamy” to be nothing short of deception. The LDS says we’re just like you we don’t do polygyny but they fail to mention that unlike the rest of western civilization they believe it is moral.

it is very immoral just like killing children. Unless God commands it.

True but it is a rebellious servant who rejects a command he has received.

The Tribes of Israel are a result of plural marriage. Christ came through a line that included plural marriage. Abraham is the “father” of two significant groups of people even today. Granted they don’t get along all that well, but still in a culture that values posterity that is a major blessing.

Bottom line though is doing what God says when God says to do it.

and nowhere have you shown god commanding it in the bible. if you want to look at “modern scripture” as the LDS define it then the BoM specifically prohibits it. the D&C also prohibited it and proclaimed that it wasn’t practiced by LDS (which was a lie) until well after the fact when this was pulled to make room for section 132 which became “retroactive” and states it’s permissible and beneficial for everyone who complies with that section. i don’t see it directly COMMANDED there though.

lot’s of evil people had posterity of significance. how is that a blessing directly attributable to polygamy? the bible tells us of bad things in store for ishmael. history concurs. abraham could have had numerous posterity without polygamy. the people of israel could have come into being without polygamy and in fact might have been better off as the divisions would have been less problematic. Christ was going to be born anyway and polygamy was NOT a requirement for this to happen. you have yet to show any “blessing” that REQUIRED polygamy. yes obedience to God is required. i don’t believe god ever commanded polygamy. lots of early mormons believed that too as their SCRIPTURES confirmed it. history gives us reason to believe that joseph smith was practicing this in secret and it was causing strife within the LDS leadership. i think the available facts show it was lust based and the “revelation” was an afterthought to try and justify it. so where did God command it?

It was not lust based. Are you unable to understand what Jacob taught on the subject?

Hellisreal, I would appreciate any information you are able to provide on polygamy as well. I think the big difference between Mormons and Catholics on this issue is that Mormons view polygamy as an occasional necessity but not intrinsically evil while Catholics have always found the practice unacceptable. I would love to know why only since the coming of Christ has there been a moratorium on polygamy.

I’m guessing divorce is a non-issue with Mormons as I couldn’t find anything about it in my copy of “Gospel Principles”, but I’d like to dig deeper. I’m interested in how it could be a conversation stopper, although I’m not sure I want the conversation stopped between Catholics and Mormons.

Em_in_Fl, thanks for your response. The catechism is indispensible to me as I prepare to share the Catholic faith with anyone.

Alma147, I’m glad to hear from you as you understand the perspective of my Mormon visitor. As a Catholic, I love praying and respectfully discussing faith with Mormon missionaries. I believe the official teaching of the Catholic Church is that public revelation ended with the death of the last apostle. Acts 11 therefore refers to a time before such prophesy ended. (I am aware of the LDS issue surrounding the apostle John but that’s another topic entirely!)
With so many wives, do they still get divorce? i thought all they had to do is go out and get another wife.

***“I should not believe the Gospel except as moved by the authority of the Catholic Church.”
Saint Augustine (354-430), Against the Letter of Mani, 5,6, 397 A.D… ***

if you are referring to the one ambiguous sentence in the BoM, then yes i understand what revisionists now claim it to have meant. (despite there being no evidence of that being the original teaching) so let’s examine that. how many children were produced by joseph smith’s polygamous “marriages”? he was sleeping around NOT “raising up a righteous seed”. there was no need for this anyway. despite the persistent faith promoting rumors and “congregational doctrine” found in most gospel doctrine classes, the census reports show the same, balanced male to female ratios within the early mormon communities as everywhere else. studies of these LDs polygamous relationships show that polygamous women at that time had fewer children that monogamous women. the net effect? actually lower population growth per capita. an influx of immigrants allowed this to be compensated for but in the end we still see no command to practice polygamy nor any direct benefits. we DO see multiple prohibitions against it and many harmful effects. i would remind you of jesus words regarding “raising up seed”. he told the pharisees that God could raise up abrahams seed from the stones. sarah had isaac miraculously, even more miraculously mary had jesus. if the lord only wanted “fruitful multiplication” then every man could have one wife and every wife could have all the children the lord chose to bless her with. polygamy has never been necessary for population growth. in fact from a strictly scientific point of view polyandry would far more likely to produce results there.

The statement is very clear. As to the numbers game. I don’t recall numbers being an official reason for the practice. It was done because the Lord commanded it. People can debate and invent and speculate as to the ways until the Christ returns (and I suspect they will), but it is of little value.

If all women were like me, there wouldn’t even be such a word in the English (or any other ) language… because, as stated b4, there is no way in — I am going to share a man with another woman… (knowingly)…

And i think a man would have to be schizophrenic to even “want” such a thing…

Polygamy violates the whole concept of marriage… If you are going to sleep around, why not just sleep around… Why bother with “marriage”… ? It is like the homosexuals… They don’t just want to be homosexuals… they want society to approve and condone what they are doing…

let’s look at it then:

from the BoM Jacob 2:30

*30 For if I will, saith the Lord of Hosts, raise up seed unto me, I will command my people; otherwise they shall hearken unto these things.
*

doesn’t command polygamy…doesn’t even mention the concept of polygamy. this could be a command for everyone to marry or for everyone to have children.

i think it telling to look at it in context:

scriptures.lds.org/en/jacob/2

there you can see all the reasons why polygamy is so bad. i think verse 24 very telling:

24 Behold, David and Solomon truly had many wives and concubines, which thing was abominable before me, saith the Lord. doesn’t specify “only in the wives God didn’t give them” it makes a very clear statement here.

this whole BoM scripture is contradicted when JS (after being caught sleeping around many times by counselors and his wife) needed an excuse and came up with D&C 132 which conveniently commands emma to forgive him and accept his mistresses or be destroyed. God didn’t command this. joseph smith made it up.
