Actually their are plenty of identified descendents of Aaron: they are called Kohen, and DNA testing has supported their claim of being descended from one male circa 3,000 years before present, ie. Aaron.
So anybody who can prove descent from one male circa 3,000 ago is a descendant of Aaron?

And how exactly did DNA prove that? According to Bible chronology, Noah lived circa 5,000 years from now; so the DNA of all mankind should be tracable to one man, i.e. Noah. Have they figured that one yet?

Unless something has changed and I am not aware of it, and it may have, teh lineage DNA testing is done through mitachondrial DNA which is passed through the mother’s side. As a man, you can trace where the matriarch of your family is from but not the patriarch.

AS to the Noah question, according to secular scientists, there is no proof of a “genetic bottleneck” 5,000 years ago in any species on earth.

Zerinus,
Thanks for the previous information. I appriciate it.

“Charity” is not the issue that I have with them. Honesty is.

zerinus

You know, Zerinus–HONESTY is the issue I have with you and other Mormons.

Isn’t that video by Mormon apologist/Mormon theologian Robert Millet proof enough that Mormons are purposely NOT honest with those outside the church?

I believe it is my duty to KEEP YOU honest here.😛

So Raphinal, you are REALLY going to need to do your own research on these topics and learn this stuff for yourself if you’re that interested. Read both sides.

Again, I understand your question. I know Zerinus understands your question–but once again, he is playing semantics and evading.

Therefore, I would have to agree with Zerinus on his answer once again–that there isn’t a difference between role of president and role of prophet within this church…he is both since “president” is moreso a title and “prophet” is what he is believed to be.

The difference I pointed out before was the distinction Mormons make when a president/prophet is acting as a prophet vs. simply being a MAN with an opinion.

Joseph Smith said:
I told them that a prophet was a prophet only when he was acting as such."

i think you are chosen by using a special pair of glasses to read special gold tablets found in the utah mountains that no one else has seen. I am not quite sure?

For what is worth, I generally have studied the topics before I post my (name removed by moderator)ut on them. That said, I had not studied the whole methodology of choosing the next President of the Church of Latter Day Saints. I asked questions and I was given answers.

I do know about the claims that Mormon leadership change the faith as time goes by. Other then my one specific question (if this is true, what would keep someone for changing it for their favor), there was no reason to discuss it on this thread. I did not enter into an apologetic discussion with zerinus and I had no intention of “going there.” I have no issue bringing up these claims, but I did not feel that this was the thread for it. There may be a time that I do want to discuss Mormon claims with zerinus, and he will hopefully understand why I am asking these questions that so many others have asked.

About these specific claims about the altering of the Mormon faith. I have never seen anything good come from discussing it. It seems to create an attitude in some Mormons that they are being unfairly attacked. It almost never seems to lead to actual discussion, unless it is a Mormon that brings it up. Perhaps we should start a thread discussing appropriate ways to discuss the methodology of Mormon scripture interpretation.

Unless something has changed and I am not aware of it, and it may have, the lineage DNA testing is done through mitochondrial DNA which is passed through the mother’s side. As a man, you can trace where the matriarch of your family is from but not the patriarch.
Thank you. There are several problems with that: Firstly, for theological purposes (i.e. for determining the right of ordination to the priesthood by virtue of direct descent), the line of descent must come through the males, not the females. You become qualified to receiving the priesthood by determining who your father was, not who your mother was. Therefore that technique does not determine who the legitimate descendent of Aaron is that has right to the priesthood. Secondly, through that technique, how are you going to decide at what point in the past the progenitor lived that fathered the entire race? Let’s suppose that you found 10,000 people who have the same mitochondrial DNA. How do you know that they all descend from a progenitor that lived 3,000 years ago? How do you know that he wasn’t somebody that lived 500 years ago? And thirdly, if mitochondrial DNS passes unchanged from one generation to the next, how are you going to determine where somebody’s MDNA came from? Aaron’s (or his wife’s) would have been the same as their progenitors, as far as you want to take it. So how do you know it came specifically from Aaron in the first place?
AS to the Noah question, according to secular scientists, there is no proof of a “genetic bottleneck” 5,000 years ago in any species on earth.
That is the whole point. These people want to have their cake and eat it. If their theory is true, everyone’s DNA should be tractable to Noah! Have they figured that one out yet?
Zerinus,
Thanks for the previous information. I appreciate it.
You are very welcome.

Thanks, I needed that.

Not so. The Kohenic genetic marker is located on the Y chromosome, which is only passed down from father to son.

Ok. That means that we cannot tell where a woman came from, right? It seems like when I had my genetics and biochem class, the testing for heretage was done mDNA, and that was only maternal. Please break it into two parts. Is the testing mDNA? and is mDNA passed through the mother? Is the Kohenic on the nuclear DNA?

That’s not what I said. I said that the Kohenic marker (the one that determines whether a man is descended from Aaron) is located on the Y chromosome. mDNA, on the other hand, is passed down only through the matrilineal line. Two completely separate things.

Ok. THe only familial studies that I was familiar with used the mDNA. I was not aware of the Kohenic one. I just googled it. Interesting. The studies occured after I was out of school and no longer following biochem news.

I stand corrected.

Yes, I like people who can laugh at themselves—once they have discovered how ridiculous they really are.

zerinus
Maybe God changed their DNA, like with Adam and Eve. Oh, and the Lamanites too.

I didn’t get to watch the ‘funereal services’ of Prophet Hinkley.

Question:

What mainstream religions sent emissaries and who were they ?

Any answers from our mormon friends???

Robert

Yes, you will find it in these verses from the Doctrine and Covenants:

D&C 107:

82 And inasmuch as a President of the High Priesthood * shall transgress, he shall be had in remembrance before the common council of the church *, who shall be assisted by twelve counselors of the High Priesthood *;

83 And their decision upon his head shall be an end of controversy concerning him.

84 Thus, none shall be exempted from the justice and the laws of God, that all things may be done in order and in solemnity before him, according to truth and righteousness.

76 But , to the keys of this ministry, to act in the office of bishop independently, without counsellors, except in a case where a President of the High Priesthood, after the order of Melchizedek , is tried, to sit as a judge in Israel.***

Yes, that is a bit of anti-Mormon propaganda. It is a complete distortion of his powers, what he can and cannot do, and how the whole system works. The President of the Church is not in a position to be able to do any such thing.

zerinus

I thought the president of the church was a prophet therefore he knows all about the church and would not need the D&C. Also if as you state from D&C a literal descendant of Aaron has a legal right to the presidency of this priesthood. Would your “Bishop” not have to be from the tribe of Levi.

All the articles I’ve read so far…it appears that THE most famous person who attended this funeral was presidential-hopeful Mitt Romney. It seems from the mainstream news media that pretty much the reason it was covered as much as it was was BECAUSE Mitt Romney took out this time from his campaign right before Super Tuesday.

I read this:
Mormon dignitaries lined the front rows, including former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, the Republican presidential hopeful, who arrived here on Friday night with two of his sons and his wife, Ann. The Romneys sat near Sen. Harry Reid of Nevada, a Democrat and majority leader in the Senate, and Utah’s Republican governor, Jon Huntsman Jr. Utah’s two Republican senators, Bob Bennett and Orrin Hatch, rounded out the VIP section.
Pretty much only Mormons attended this funeral and their conference center wasn’t even full. It’s not like the current president, former presidents, and heads of state or the Pope attended.

ETA: I just found this:
Several members of the Interfaith Roundtable, including Baha’i Jan Saeed, United Methodist Bishop Warner Brown, pastors Steven Goodier and Brian and Jennifer Hare-Diggs, and American Indian Forrest Cuch, came to honor Hinckley.

Romney has been downplaying his religion I wonder if this funeral comes at an awkward time for him? Just when he was having some success with evangelicals they are reminded that he is morman only a few hours before the big day tuesday.

I also found this:
Notable attendees
The LDS Church said the following political leaders, in addition to many other Utah politicians and community leaders, attended Gordon B. Hinckley’s funeral. They include:
Republican Utah Sens. Orrin Hatch and Bob Bennett (both Mormon)
Republican Utah Reps. Rob Bishop and Chris Cannon (both Mormon)
Democratic Utah Rep. Jim Matheson (Mormon)
Sen. Mike Crapo, R-Idaho (Mormon)
Rep. John Doolittle, R-Calif (Mormon)
Rep. Jeff Flake, R-Ariz (Mormon)
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nevada (Mormon)
Sen. Gordon Smith, R-Oregon (Mormon)
Mike Leavitt, U.S. secretary of Health and Human Services (former Utah governor and SURPRISE!!! He’s ALSO Mormon:rolleyes: )

Absolutely this funeral came at most disadvantageous time for Romney!

It doesn’t help that it is splashed all over papers about
Romney’s attendance at the Hinckley funeral – and the candidate’s mention that he took counsel from the church leader before entering the presidential race …
