Mormonism - A Catholic Perspective

Thanks Ed,
I would like to ask a question of any LDS that may be watching: Is it true that the LDS Church teaches Catholics are idol worshipers and Mary worshipers? If not, would you agree that this is a common idea among the members of the church? I hear it whenever one of my in laws wants to take a good dig at me. I’ve also heard it at an LDS sacrament meeting and in line at Walmart from strangers.
To Catholics:
Are these accusations true? If not, please explain how they are not.
Thank you
Don’t the Mormons own Walmart?

My understanding is that Wal-Mart is privately owned by the Walton Family. My understanding is that Albertson’s (a grocery store in the West) is owned by the LDS Church.

Jet Blue was owned by a Mormon (don’t know if it still is) but not by the Mormon Church. There are some very good Mormon business men - which one should not confuse with the LDS owning the businesses.

I shouldn’t speak without facts in front of me but I don’t have them, unfortunately, so this is just speculation (for now). I was told that there were facts that the mormon church owned both Wal-mart and Walgreens.

No hurt in mentioning speculation…all one has to do is research it.

Why the speculation? What difference does it make if the LDS church owns Walmart or Walgreens?

Well, I would need to get more facts together before I can answer this question. But I will say this…where my money goes is no small matter to me.

I’m Catholic and I do believe that Mormons are Christians. Now let me ask a question. What is more important that your daughter go to a Catholic Church or that she goes to church? Your daughter is an adult and can decide for herself.

Not sure who you are responding to here…but if it were my daughter, MOST DEFINATELY it would matter if she went to a Catholic Church! The mormon church does not have the Eucharist(Body,Blood,Soul and Divinity)-the center of our faith.

“Unless you eat my body and drink my blood, you have no life within you.”

…“worthily” of course.

Maybe because they are two of the largest, most powerful commercial businesses in the country, and in a capitalist society, therein lie the keys to the country. IF that type of power were abused, it could bode ill for those that are not of the same faith in a religion that holds such financial and secular power, and COULD mean that the rest of us non-LDS would be excluded in some way. THIS IS NOT ACCUSATION, it is merely an explanation as to why that could be something to be concerned about. I can’t say if Walmart and Walgreens at the will of the LDS Church would do such a thing. The 2 W’s certainly do seem to be taking over the country though! 😉

Let me ask you this? Does the Catholic Church own its own country? Do they not have a lot of money? Do they not weigh in on policy matters around the world? Does the United States not have an ambassador to the Vatican?

I see the fear about who owns what to be interesting…but, as JPII often said “BE NOT AFRAID!”

I have read in the LDS catechism book for the young adult women that the only way to be truly pleasing in the eyes of Heavenly Father is to be a homemaker and submit to their husbands in all matters. I have heard stories of women (some in my husband’s family) who were chided and threatened because they had jobs outside the home. My neighbor has been put down by LDS members because he is the homemaker and his wife works outside the home because they feel more successful and fulfilled that way. The talents of the women in my family have always been in the areas traditionally reserved for men, but this is not tolerated, as far as I can see, by LDS. My daughter would not thrive in such an environment, and neither would I.

It also concerns me that D&C 132 (vs 62 I think) clearly states that it is not sinful for a man to have several wives at one time, as long as they were all virgins and his first wife approves. Further on, it says that a wife should not deny her husbands request or she will be “destroyed”. At the end of D&C, there is a letter by President Woodruff stating the Mormon Church no longer recognizes plural marriage because it is now the law of the land, but it does not in any way seem to retract the former statement of whether or not it is sinful. Jesus clearly stated that marriage is one man and one woman, and it had been that way since Moses’s laws. There are other similar statements, including the one about God coming from another planet and being a polygamist, made by early church leaders that are now claimed NOT OK by the official position of the LDS Church, yet Joseph Smith, the originator of the BOM and D&C is still revered and considered the founder of the modern day LDS Church. This bothers me personally. So that’s why I would have a problem with my daughter joining the LDS Church. If anyone cares to correct me on facts or reference, please do so.

And the facts:
LDS women are more likely to be employed in professional occupations than Catholic or Protestant women. Twenty-three percent of LDS women are employed in professional occupations, which is similar to Jewish women and women with no religious affiliation.

Do you worship the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob? At least two of those guys are polygamists. The nation of Israel are the descendants of a plural marriage. You do know that Moses had more than one wife, and that the Lord gave David multiple wives after the law of Moses was given.

I don’t know why anyone would have a problem with their daughter joining The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. The National Conference of Jews and Christians in remarking on the anti-Mormon film the Godmakers expresses my views regarding the caricatures built up in the minds of a lot of people regarding the LDS religion: “The film does not - in our opinion - fairly portray the Mormon Church, Mormon history, or Mormon belief. It makes extensive use of ‘half-truth’, faulty generalizations, erroneous interpretations, and sensationalism. It is not reflective of the genuine spirit of the Mormon faith.”

As with 99.9 percent of the speculation of “facts” regarding the LDS, it is false. I have heard though that some very powerful Jewish bankers are taking the missionary lessons and are impressed.

Mormonism is a dangerous, ultra-cult-like form of Christianity. It’s all about maintenance of strong patriarchical control, in an effort to fight off modernity. It’s very treacherous.

Jesus came, and his Word is superior to that in the Old Testament. Jesus clearly taught one husband and ONE wife.

Polygamy was never right in his eyes, nor will it ever be.
Adam and Eve were made for eachother.

The God that is Jesus and the Holy Spirit ,that of Abraham and Isaac is not the same of the LDS church.

Heaven is for everyone, the one Heaven where we will all be in the presence of the ONE God.

Catholics, Protestants, LDS and Jews, everyone.

I love the LDS people, but their God is not my God. My God is everliving and All-Powerful and All-Forgiving.

When Jesus died on the cross he opened the gates of Heaven, for all people.

There is no need for a Temple-marriage and there is no need for a woman to be sealed to her husband. Salvation is free, all of the talk about sealings, and the three levels of heaven and polygamy those are all things that Joseph Smith made up and taught.

You will find nothing in the Bible, or in the early history of the Catholic Church, even inthe religions that branched off of the Catholic church of LDS doctrine. It’s no where.

So someone who knows the fullness and Truth of the One God have a problem with their daughter giving that up to live something that is completely man-made? Yes, that is a big problem.

Yes. I almost joined the LDS church and my family acted the same way. I didn’t understand what was so wrong with what they believed and how could they prove it isn’t ture.

Well, after a very convincing message from the Holy spirit I studied. I studied early church history of both LDS and Catholicsm. Believe me when I started studying it was still with the intent to join the LDS church, my boyfriend is LDS and I wanted to be with him. Only after my studying and much to my dismay I realized that the LDS church was not the church that christ founded. Everything pointed to the Catholic Church.

And I was shocked with what lds people actually believe, they try and cover it up in missionary meetings(yes I took the discussions) and even in their own doctrines. But they can’t hide from people who actually take the time to study.

I have no problem with lds people at all, they hold a special place in my heart. Many many many people in my life that I love are LDS and I have no problem being around them and even doing church activities with them. But I do pray for them, and I hope that they discover a God that is all-loving and does not make you earn that love and salvation that is so lovingly gave to all people.

LDS people, I will see you in Heaven. The one Heaven, in the grace of our Lord, the one and only.

Perhaps the book Why Do Catholics Do That? by Kevin Orlin Johnson, Ph.D. (and originally entitled Expressions of the Catholic Faith might help answer some questions you might have concerning the Vatican and the Pope’s duties and authority. And chapter 35 of the book Come Home…The Door is Open by Louise D’Angelo has answers concerning the wealth of the Church. (She says that although the Church does own many buildings, they are for the poor–hospitals, schools, churches, orphanages–and the art treasures she also owns are inherited as well as being a record of history, are actually held in a form of a stewardship–like in the various museums–for us!)

Jees, I guess all the LDS women with graduate degrees and professional careers throughout the church doesn’t mean a thing. Or that pretty much the first women with the right to vote in the U.S. and the world were LDS women. Or that while other religions had a long history of not giving equal access to education to both their sons and daughters, the LDS always have. Why ignorantly and dishoinestly slander a people and religion?

LMFAO.

Yeah okay. Ima tell my Mom “I am officially a Mormon, because walmart and walgreens have such good prices!”

I could see it now.

With love and grace,
_[Samuel]

I looked it up, and as far as I can see the 2 W’s are NOT owned by the LDS church, but we don’t know about members. They couldn’t even be owned by the same person/people because I now remember a fight they’ve been having, since a state (can’t remember which one) wants to ban selling cigarettes by drugstores (including Walgreens) but nothing was said about Walmart, so cigs being a huge source of income for drugstores, and Walmart being a major competitor, they naturally fought it. I don’t know the outcome. Another thought I had: Why would any store owned by LDS allow the sale of cigarettes and liquor? LOL!
😉

I think my post about the Vatican being its own country and the US having an ambassador to it, was misunderstood.

I was trying to get the point across that just because a church might own something does not mean that that church is going to use its property to ‘take over’ the world!

I do understand about the Vatican and the riches that it holds. I do understand about the orphanages and schools that the Catholics operated around the world, along with all their missionaries. I apologize if my post was not clear in its intent.

No one can back that up. I can’t prove it, just had an idea because of the things that I’ve seen and been told. All the clues seem to lead to that in my mind, but it’s just a theory I’m researching. Who am I to say for certain? :bluelite: <–Guess the blue light makes me special, har har!
Another question though: Is it true that the LDS Church has a large database of personal information about folks from all around the world? Is it just members of the LDS Church, or everyone? I know about the genealogy stuff, but is there more, like say criminal records, addresses, credit history, etc? Just a question. I’ve also heard the LDS church has it’s own banking and mortgage lender system.
