What gives the LDS church the** RIGHT ** to baptize anyone after they are deceased? Unless the person’s family that is still ALIVE requests it?

I do resent this! I don’t care if one believes it is valid or not! It is **NONE ** of thier business!

that is the reason for their extensive genealogical database/holdings. they “baptize” deceased family members. i am still not comfortable with it, but they are targeting family members by discovering their personal family tree. the issue here is that they are baptizing deceased popes, multiple times, because of who they are, regardless if any LDS member is related to a pope.

In some cases living relatives are the ones who request it. All it takes is someone, anyone to submit a name for a deceased person to be vicariously baptized. So in a family of Catholics with one family member being LDS, that one LDS can submit any of their deceased relatives names. And there isn’t much the rest of the family can do about it.

I didn’t mean it to sound disrespectful if that’s the impression you got. Word associations are unavoidable.

Besides. I thought I made it clear that I wasn’t looking for a fight or to upset anyone. If you’re upset by the comment I made, that’s your fault not mine.

You asked a question and I gave you an answer.

That is the only thing that you “made clear”. 🤷

What made you think I was upset by your comment?

You sound upset by my comment!

The exclamation point at the end led me to think you were getting defensive. Sorry if I was mistaken.

Not a clue. But I’d be interested in looking it up for the same reasons I was curious as to why yours is called a ward.

Ooooooh, for all those interested I Parish is based on the Latin word for Diocese meaning “community of sojourners”.

learn something every day… Just never occurred to me to look it up…

According to the Wikipedia entry for parish, it has the following etymology:

The term “Parish” derives from Anglo-Fr. parosse (1075), later paroche (1292), from O.Fr. paroisse, from Latin paroechia = “diocese”, from Greek παρоικια = “district” or “diocese”, from Greek παρά = “beside”, οικος = “house”. The Hellenistic Greek term παρоικια originally meant “sojourn in a foreign land” (in the Septuagint) or “community of sojourners”, with reference to the Jewish people in a foreign land (1st cent. B.C.), and later with reference to earthly life as a temporary abode (1st cent. A.D., also New Testament: 1 Peter 1:17, 2:11); the term hence was applied to “Christian community” (3rd cent.), “diocese” (3rd cent.), and ultimately “parish” (4th cent.).

The alternate Latin spelling parochia which serves as the ultimate origin of the English word, arose from confusion with parochus, a local official in the Roman provinces who supplied public officials with food, shelter, etc., when they passed through his district (from Hellenistic Greek πάροχος = “riding in the same chariot as”, “beside the chariot of”).

I have not researched the origin of the word “ward” in the history of the LDS Church; but the first use of it that appears in LDS scripture is in D&C 128 in relation to the ordinance of baptism for the dead: “. . . there can be a recorder appointed in each ward of the city . . .”

The definitions of a ward that I have found on the Internet include the following:

A district into which a city or town is divided for the purpose of administration and elections

A ward is an electoral district used in local politics, most notably in the United Kingdom . . . and North America

It seems that the “ward” was originally used in the LDS Church is this sense; and gradually acquired a meaning roughly equivalent to your “parish”.

Exactly it’s just wrong. And I seriously doubt that a German Pope has any relatives who are lds. Considering the cult barely exists outside of America, and in America it barely exists outside of Utah.

Right on, Rebecca!

:tsktsk: Furthermore…How would the LDS people like it if Other Religions went ahead and baptized thier dead relatives??

For myself this is just against my wishes as a Christian. What do I have to do have my attorney put it in ** " My Will " ** that the LDS Church is not ** NOT** allowed to baptize me when I’m dead??

:nope:

🤷 Wonder how Zerinus would feel if somebody baptized him against his will???

Yea lol I agree.

“He opened his mouth to blaspheme God, and to slander his name and his dwelling place and those who live in heaven.” (Revelation 13:6)

Hello Kristine. I share your sentiments in that I think it is extremely tacky and in exponentially bad taste to do this. And in the case of the popes, the fact that they are publicizing it is just them acting like bratty children throwing sand in a sandbox. But the fact of the matter is this: whether they call it a “baptism”, water sprinkling ceremony or an LDS un-christianization for the life-challenged, in the end it is just one thing: a farce. It means as much as a wiccan hex to turn our auras purple.

Particularly when you consider some of the other people they have baptized:
