There is one God. When we pray to Jesus we are praying to God. When we pray to the Father, we are praying to God. When we pray to the Holy Spirit, we are praying to God.Here’s my take on why we don’t pray to Jesus.
We are told to pray “to” the Father, “in the name of” Jesus Christ, and “through” the Holy Spirit. For us, prayer is supposed to be a Trinitarian experience. If a prayer only involves one member of the Godhead, or some Saint who isn’t even a member of the Godhead, then it is missing something, from our perspective. (Although I’m sure that God accepts Catholic prayers in the spirit they are intended. I don’t mean to put you down by saying this.)
Mormons make a distinction that is at its best modalistic, a its worse it is polytheistic.
When we pray to a Saint, we are praying WITH the Saint, to God.
