In the sociology course I finished up last semester, it was taught that the majority of cultures, today, are polygamous. However, the majority of people live in monogamous cultures.

“Polygamous” includes polygyny, polyandry and polyamory. (Y’all are talking about poygyny.)

I’ve got the Penguin Classics version of “The Origin of the Family, Private Property, and the State.” by Engels, who says primitive societies practice all those things - and group marriage which is *polygynandry * one you missed :ehh: 🙂

Doesn’t surprise me! Our professor said that there were so many ways that people married that it was not possible for him to cover them all.

The most interesting/unusual, according to our views of course, was a tribe where a woman who was widowed was expected to buy another woman, who would then have sexual relationships with a male relative of the deceased. Any children were then considered the children of the deceased husband, and the surrogate mother/slave was considered the widow’s husband.

I think there is a people around Tibet or Nepal where they practice a sort of communal marriage where all the brothers share their wives. Yikes too.
 
Islam does say you must treat them fair and equal but it is impossible to do that unless you are a million-air and it is IMPOSSIBLE to treat them equal emotionally. There will always be one better than the other.

Women practice polyandry in Tibet. They have more than one husband, of their choosing.

this is exactly the point. Allah says it impossible to be fair yet allows polygamy, and Muhammad married a dozen. To say he was fair to alll means Allah was wrong, and to say he was not fair means he broke his own teachings.
