Who said her body has ceased to function? There are many reasons why people who are either disabled or infirm have difficulty swallowing food - it doesn’t mean they are near death. The church teaching is clear - in cases in which the provision of food and water are not a burden to the patient, they must be administered. It is basic care.Okay, I can accept that. I don’t mean to be callous about this as I have learned much from Mother Angelica, but at this juncture what is the point? The earthly body ceases to function, but as we all know the soul, the very life force continues on. Out of everyone on the earth, we Christians have the least to fear about moving on and of us Christians for good Mother Angelica the fear should be even less. I was with my mother when she passed and it was a beautiful moving moment, the most natural thing in the world. Sure I miss her, and I mourned her, but where she is now nothing can hurt her and that gives me great solace.
So then the question remains, when do we stop such actions? Would it be somehow wrong for a person paralyzed from the neck down to refuse a breathing machine? Or in this case to stop nutrition which when given only prolongs the inevitable? And I wonder, is this being done in accordance with her wishes?
Prayers for Mother Angelica.
May God grant her health and well being of mind, body, soul, and spirit according to his divine will and our souls good.
