I wasn’t into the whole Indiana Jones trip, but he was good as Han Solo, and fantastic as the President who defeats all the bad guys on his plane.
“Get off my airplane!”

Also, he is one of the few actors from the 80s and beyond that I think is handsome.

I thought he was good in ‘Frantic.’ And ‘Patriot Games’. But I don’t know whether another actor could have done just as well, or whether he deserves a spot in the pantheon of great American actors. He seems almost to have lucked into a number of iconic roles (if that’s even possible).

On the other hand, he has a quiet slow-burn charm that may be reminiscent of some of the older stars of yore, such as Henry Fonda. Or maybe he’s just a cipher.

I’ve heard it said that Tom Selleck was Spielberg’s first choice for the role of Indiana Jones, but turned it down.

Selleck was very effective as Eisenhower in Countdown to D-Day. That’s the kind of war movie I like best – behind-the-scenes action and the difficult decisions.

He was in mousehunt too, very funny.

Ray Liotta, scary man, I knew someone who looked like him, also scary.

James Woods is good at scary, too. Also Christopher Walken, mentioned earlier by @Tis_Bearself. But none of these guys are “actors from yesteryear”! As far as I know, they’re all still very active in Hollywood.

True, oops.

Peter Ustinov, Peter Cushing, Peter O’Toole, Robert Shaw

Spencer Tracey, Clark frankly my dear Gable, Christopher Reeve?

Bing Crosby, Loretta Young and any actor or actress who is/was Catholic.

Gregory Peck was, and very good in the scarlet and the black, with Christopher Plummer.

(Based on a true story.)

That is a good movie.

Bing Crosby in Going My Way and Bells of St. Mary’s. I always like to watch those two around Christmas time for some reason.

My all time favorite actress - Greta Garbo, THE Supreme Beauty of the screen, then and all the time since, never surpassed and never equaled, THE Star of Stars.

There is a movie called On Borrowed Time with Beulah Bondi an Lionel Barrymore where Sir Cedrick Hardwick is ’ death ’ caught up a tree. great movie. Also did you see Beulah in the episode of the Waltons…?

The most unforgettable Hollywood villain of all time: Peter Ustinov as Nero in Quo Vadis

Christopher Reeve
It makes me feel old to see Christopher Reeve referred to as a ‘star of yesteryear’. But not far off, in reality: the original Superman movie turns 40 this Saturday. 😮

My favorite star of yesteryear would probably be Rita Hayworth. I have several of her movies on DVD.
On the male actors side, maybe Gene Kelly.

I guess I like stars who could act and dance. 🕺💃

Gene Kelley was an incredible dancer and not a bad actor either. Totally agree.

Gene Kelly is from Pittsburgh, on the job back in the 1980’s, one of my coworkers was his classmate.

Two favorite male actors, whom I believe also to be among the very best, are Fredric March and Brian Aherne. (My father preferred Paul Muni to all other male actors.) Honorable mention also to Ralph Richardson for his fabulous performance in The Heiress. For the women, of course there is the incomparable Bette Davis, but others I admire are Katharine Hepburn, especially when she is paired with Spencer Tracy, and the “other” Hepburn, Audrey is also great. Wendy Hiller and Joan Lorring, less well known, are excellent as well, and so is Mildred Dunnock. Finally, there are a whole bunch of supporting, character actors that are exceptional, headed by the omnipresent Donald Crisp.
