violent, coarse, and/or sexual movies… alright, so it is okay to watch them as long as I don’t mimic the behavior or think lustful thoughts? and is it okay to laugh at racial or raunchy humor, as long as I don’t truly belive in them?

and is it okay to listen to any genre of music, as long as it doesn’t lead me astray from God’s teachings?
 
If you were standing next to the Blessed Mother and Jesus, would you play the music you are listening to now?

if you applied that to any situation imaginable my answer would be: no. because if that were the case I’d be telling him how much i love him and nothing else.

I know this wasn’t a question directed at me, but I just have to answer. Of course I would. If I didn’t, I would be lying to myself and to them.

They’re mature adults; they can handle it–but, of course, I only watch movies that I know *I *can handle. I always look at the rating, and sometimes, if I’m really skeptical, I’ll look it up and see how intense it is. If it’s too much, I would not watch or listen to it.

It’s about being responsible for what you expose yourself to. If you feel uncomfortable watching or listening to something, then, you really shouldn’t be, for the sake of your own maturity.

I struggle with this. I know, maturity-wise, that I am not affected by the message of many songs that I have (I have a strong affinity to heavy metal music). But would I be praising God by listening to “Closer” by Nine Inch Nails or “Lovedrive” by the Scorpions? Would I want my nieces or nephews listening to these songs? Movings towards God means losing our attachments to worldly things, something that I fail miserably at. .
… I still think a good measuring stick is would I listen/watch the song/movie with the Blessed Mother and Jesus next to me.

In all honesty, it’s completely your choice on whether you want to listen to those songs or not. No one else can tell you otherwise.

If it’s really bugging you, you should try out Christian rock… I hesitate in typing that because I dislike Christian rock more than life itself and I believe there is no such thing as “Christian Heavy Metal,” no matter what the band says.

But, as an example to show you that you’re not the only Catholic (or Christian) to listen to such music, I listen to hardcore punk (like Rise Against), post-hardcore punk (like Eyes Set to Kill), hard rock (like Avenged Sevenfold), emocore (like Hawthorne Heights), and a lot of alternative (Blink 182, My Chemical Romance, Panic at the Disco, etc)… does that sound like something a Catholic would normally listen to? Not really.

Besides, as much as I hate to admit this, at the end of the day, no matter how great your favorites bands or songs are, it’s just music.

Unless the music advocates matierial that is sin, I find no problem in listening to it. Like Blade and Blood, I listen to a lot of heavy metal and rock including:
The Who
Iron Maiden
Slayer
Iced Earth
Ted Nugent
Deep Purple
The Rolling Stones
Ozzy Osbourne/Black Sabbath

Would you listen to “Skeleton Christ” or “Cat Scratch Fever” or “Stray Cat Blues” in front of the Blessed Mother or Jesus? I own albums from most of the bands that you and Blade and Blood list, plus more that I would never listen to in front of the Blessed Mother or Jesus. I still must ask - does it glorify God? Does it offend God?

What makes you think God even cares? Besides, if I might define Him, I think He’s too beyond us to possess the human quality of being offended.
 
I would say to the people about the music they listen on this fourm post, that you are playing with fire. St. Paul said it is not what you put in your mouth that defiles you but from the out of the heart. That music you listen to does not go to your stomach and then to the intestines but to your Head and it stays there. At which point will rot and then come some where, whether in your speech or your actions. Now am i saying that heavy metal is bad, no ,i love the stuff, but to say that there is no christian heavy metal or any HM that has any good morals and lyrics is stupid and uninformed. For example chirstian metal bands: As I Lay Dying, Underoath, All that Remains, The showdown, Emery, Disciple, Pillar, Jesus Wept, Red, and the best HM Christian band is Demon Hunter. The HM that while are not Christian are moraly good are bands like, NightWish, Hatebreed(Weird name i know but it is good), Creed, Evanesence, Within Temptation, ShadowsFall.

SO there is alot out there that is good, But there is no chance that you can listen to Slayer and not have that evil filth come out of your mouth or heart. You can not say that you would listen to that stuff next to jesus with songs like Raining blood. Which about murdering people so much it rains blood. You would be called a Hypocrite and Christ would be ashamed of you. So please reconsider what you listen to and SEARCH diligently and you will find good alternative music that will glorify God and be as heavy as anything else out there.

why would you want to watch or listen to garbage? do you know your brain and psyche work like your computer–garbage in, garbage out, or in other words, you are what you eat. If you surround yourself with these images and thoughts, soon they will replace all that is good in your memory, imagination and intellect.

No it is never okay to laugh at what is wrong, that is the same as condoning and encouraging it, and is the further evil of abetting others in sin.

you need to examine what is going on in you that makes you find such drek entertaining, amusing or stimulating because it ain’t good and you better fix it

I know that Slayer is nowhere near Christian, however, I do choose the songs by them that I listen to carefully. I also know that music can influence people but I don’t think it is the all-changing factor that some make it out to be.
 
If you’re into heavy metal and are looking for Christian themes and members of those bands I recommend the following to you:

Trouble
Deliverance
Horde
Mortification
Vengeance Rising
Living Sacrifice
Stryper

I’m probably forgetting a lot but you can start with those 🙂

Wrong. Tom Araya is indeed Christian, in fact, Catholic. I don’t know how practicing of one or not, that isn’t for me to say either way, but he has admitted in interviews that the imagery of Slayer is all aesthetic and for show. I believe even Glen Benton’s (Deicide) son is a Christian. Don’t believe all the hype the media creates. I know most bands and people associated with them personally and to say they all practice witchcraft in the traditional sense of the word makes me giggle.

I tend to agree with posters such as Blade and Blood about what music you listen to. I’ve been a fan of rap and hip hop since I can remember, and I would love it if Jesus came down to listen to some Tupac with me. Not only that, I’ve been to so many live shows and seen so many artists and I know that their talent is God-given, and why not appreciate that? You wouldn’t ask if it were wrong to gaze at the Mona Lisa, would you?

I tend to have a bit of a different opinion of movies. I grew up watching the slasher films of the late 80’s and early 90’s and I have yet to don a hockey mask and lay waste to groups of unsuspecting teenagers. But now, I tend to find those movies a lot more graphic, and their sole purpose seems to be how far they can push the envelope, as opposed to just scaring the snot out of you for 2 hours. I think that a lot of the content of some movies tends to be a little over the edge, but that’s just me. Did I think the 40 year old Virgin was funny, well yes. Were there scenes in that movie that could have been taken out because they were unnecessary to the plot? Most certainly. And I’m not easily embarrassed, or some prude who can’t handle talking about sex, but there have been times while watching a movie with my wife, I felt a little uncomfortable.

I think one has to make the decision for themself on which movies and music they will allow themselves to enjoy. There is no specific church ruling on A Perfect Circle, or the Texas Chainsaw Massacre, so you have to use your own discretion. Also, if you feel that you have watched or listened to something sinful, confession is always open.

Thanks. I knew that one of them was a Christian, but I didn’t know who. You also articulated what I was trying to say but couldn’t put into words. I know that all their imagery was for show and had no meaning, which is why I’m OK with listening to it.
