so does the genre of the music have nothing to do with it being sinful, only the lyrical content? and if the band has some songs with sinful lyrics, but some songs without sinful lyrics, would it be wrong to listen to only the non-sinful ones because you would be supporting an artist who makes songs that are sinful? because i like music that screams are these sounds a disgrace to our God-given musical talents?

and back to movies…

are the usccb’s ratings of O (morally offensive) the only movies we should never watch, and just be careful not to be tempted by lower ratings?

sorry for all of the questions, but music is one of my ultimate forms of entertainment, and comedies and action movies are up there too. i just want to know if i can continue to enjoy these types of things.

I, personally, think lyrical content shouldn’t matter, unless, of course, you feel uncomfortable with them.

As for ratings, an “O” rating–I suspect–would probably be the rating of a poorly written porno, so I definitely would not go that route. Not entirely because it’s sinful, but because it’s simply a *bad *movie.

I wouldn’t use the USCCB’s ratings as a guideline – they’re made with no authority whatsoever, and show a remarkable laxity in regards to basic Catholic moral law on content.

So basically even if they say it’s OK, it often is not.

When something is depicted in a movie or music, if it is simulated in a way that doesn’t encourage sin, as long as it isn’t blasphemy or something intrinsically evil to even depict – it will be OK to depict… as long as it also doesn’t encourage that sin.

However a majority of movies nowadays contain scenes that simply cannot be described as anything other than encouraging people to sin and intrisically evil to even depict.

Such as – Taking the Lord’s name in vain, blaspheming His name – that is, intrinsically evil to even simulate in a movie. Such as – encouraging people to the mortal sin of lust, forbidden. Pornography – Often under the name of ‘Rated PG-13, Rated R’, forbidden.

Suggestive music – forbidden. . . Blaspheming music… forbidden. Sinful to play, it’s repeating blaspheming, which offends God.

And so, yes, you have to give up a lot, and not be like a person of the world. To be a Catholic and to be like everybody else… is a contradiction in terms.

But why are you supposed to give it up? For good reasons – They do bad things to your soul and your soul is better of doing good things that are other than listing or watching to this stuff.

Would anybody think it’s weird if I said I think I may be in one of those Christian heavy metal bands someday? Sorry, but I love to tell this story and I really would like some (name removed by moderator)ut on it.
OK, so I was at a Youth Conference in South Carolina last June, and we were meditation on Psalm 139: 23-24

Search me, O God, and know my heart! Try me and know my thoughts! And see if there be any grievous way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting!

As I was doing this an image of me playing guitar popped into my head (among other things:blush: ) and I wondered if my guitar playing was sinful. I talked with my youth leader about this and he said that it wasn’t in sin, but that maybe God was trying to tell me something. So I prayed about it some more, and I had this feeling that God wanted me to be in a band.

Fast forward 2 weeks later to family vacation in SC:

I was praying on the beach about this, and I had a vision of a person (I think it was on older version of me) with a band behind him, playing an amazing solo infront of 60,000 or so people in a packed stadium. I kept pressing into this as the days went on and God eventually revealed more and more of the vision.

Fast forward 3 months later, near end of summer break:

I was praying about this vision, and at the end I saw a spinning newspaper (like in the old cartoons) with the words “National Sensation” and “Household Name” repeating themselves in my head.
I’ve also noticed seemingly secular experiences have added to this including:
-I’m taking Psychology/Sociology classes next year and think that this will help me when writing lyrics to choose what words to use to evoke certain feelings and responses
-I’m really good at guitar
-I can play drums, all manner of percussion, and a little keyboards
-I have 2 songs written and people really liked them
