Moving on after porn

OP says she “boils over and loses her temper” once a day. That’s not “staying on his case;” it’s called having a daily meltdown, and at some point it needs to stop - really soon, lest OP become part of the problem (and I suspect she already is; she’s admitted to neglecting him).

The only place I read the OP saying she “neglected” him was at the beginning, and it was for only a week, and that was before she discovered his porn usage. That hardly sounds like she’s maliciously depriving him of the marital bond because of his behavior. Not to mention, it seems like you’re saying that if she doesn’t (or didn’t) submit to the marital embrace, she’s the one who caused him to turn to porn.

Hello. I’ve been trolling CAF looking for answers… Not sure what I’m seeking: prayers, advice… I’m heartbroken.

10 years ago DH and I were still dating and I found out he watched porn. It devastated me at the timr but he loved me and he quit. I got past it, today we are happily married with 2 children and this past year we have really grown closer, after a lot of turmoil In our marriage. Finally, things were good. Really good. Then this weekend I discovered he was looking at porn again.

He said it was going on about 2 weeks and he was looking at it on his new smartphone after he found the “incognito” browser. Guys at work suggested it. I discovered the phone abandoned in the barn with the horrible pictures still on it. I confrontrd him, He was upset, ashamed, apologetic…said this was the first time it escalated to masturvation.

I don’t know what I did but I feel like I failed him. He is ashamed and mad at himself but is also accusing me of driving him to do it due to lack of intimacy (it had been a week). And he says I’m overreacting by being so broken over it, after all they’re"just pictures" and don’t mean anything… Ya know, “everyone else does it” and “_____'s wife doesn’t mind…”

The worst part is he knew what it did to me 10 years ago. How bad I hurt then, before my body was wrecked by having kids and aging. I can’t trust him right now. He knew it would hurt me deeply. And he was sneaky, hiding it in a browser I wouldn’t see or trace. I told him I felt like he was cheating on me and he blew it off as nonsense.

In a tirade I bawled and told him if I ever caught him again we were over, the kids and I would leave and make him sell the farm. I don’t want to leave him, I love him so much, but I don’t know if I can weather this if it doesn’t end now, today, cold turkey.

I installed mutual accountability apps on our phones last night, which he seemed a little irritated by.

How do I move past this? How do I make him understand why it kills me? I’m not a hot little 21 year old anymore, it seems like that’s what he wants and i cant be that person. I’m so lost and alone right now, he’s my best friend… I feel gut punched… I have nobody to talk to about it. I thought he was different. Better than that. How do I make him stop if he’s so aloof about it? He says he will but… I just don’t know. 😦 how do I learn to trust him again?
Dear Farmerswife,

I’m so sorry you have to experience this kind of pain…nothing hurts more than being betrayed and hurt by those who are supposed to love us most.

Beyond the allure of porn and your intimate life he is clearly (not) dealing with a much bigger issue; the understanding of LOVE and commitment!

The love we pledge in marriage is not a love based on how our spouse looks, how sexually available they are for us, how great and hot and fun they are. If your spouse has days or weeks or months when he/she’s not fun to be around, you still have to love. It is not optional. Looking at naked women is NOT loving. As a Catholic, the sinful implications go even deeper.

How would he feel if he found out you were looking and fantasizing about younger, better looking men, naked men? There is NEVER any justification to betray or to be unloving to your spouse. Our ONLY physical needs are: sleep, food, air, water. Sex is not one of them, orgasm is not one of them, sexual stimulation is not one of them, hot, young, airbrushed wife is not one of them. He needs to get past his infantile excuses and understand the very grave nature of his actions.

If he cannot despise and “die to porn” because it endangers his soul/eternity, wounds his wife, objectifies the women he’s looking at and jeopardizes his children’s livelyhood than really, what sacrifices CAN he make?

He needs to learn true love from Its very Author. He needs to truly Look at Christ on the cross and beg Him to teach him to love himself, to love you, to love his family and everyone else. He should be waking up every morning wondering how he can serve you better, how he can be an initiated and giver of love, how he can love Christ better. When he stops worrying about his “needs”, he’ll become the saint God has created him to be. (and of course, this is valid for all of us!)

OP’s post #12 contains her saying she had become “complacent” and “routine” in her marriage due to farm, kids, etc. She acknowledges she intimated to him that divorce could occur.

We’re getting one side of the story, and that side paints a portrait of someone who - while having a right to be upset - is melting down daily; won’t forgive; won’t even try to get past this; and clearly has no plan beyond daily meltdowns - And is having those feelings fueled by people who seem just as emotional, bitter almost. “Having a daily meltdown and no other plan” is certainly not a very good plan for getting past this, and this thread is coming off as an anti-husband rant. None of the posters are actually suggesting anything positive; they’re just trashing the husband. Shame.

Wow. I sure hope you weren’t referring to me. Maybe the reason you perceive it to be “weepy” and “anti-husband” is because you’ve never been on the receiving end of this type of adultery. In my mind and the minds of most wives, and the Church, this type of behavior is just as bad as if he were having sex in real life with another woman. The scary part is that this is much more secretive and portable than scheduling trysts with a real person. It seems you’re dismissing it as being ‘only’ viewing porn as opposed to what it really is - breaking the marital bond.

I believe there needs to be a balance between holding him accountable and not talking about it at all. IF he is penitent and goes to Confession and counseling, then it would be reasonable to back off a bit and see if he can remain sober. If, however, he’s exhibiting typical clandestine attitudes - scurrying off to be alone; staying up late at night by himself; getting ultra-defensive/angry when asked - then she should stay on his case.
It is “adultery in the heart”, as Our Lord put it, but according to priests I’ve spoken to it is a very different animal from adultery with a live woman. As I noted in my earlier post, there is nothing “real” for the man caught in this sin…there is no emotions, no feelings, no love…she could be a cartoon figure for all intents and purposes. Its all about the “high” of the moment. It isn’t a relationship. While porn is extremely damaging, an affair with a real person a) carries additional risks of diseases b) physically profanes the marital union in a more profound manner (the husband becomes one flesh with someone who is not his wife) c) usually involves great emotional ties to a real person. An affair with a real person always indicates that the adulterer feels something is missing or lacking in the marriage. This is not necessarily so for porn, as I noted from personal experience. Men fall into the addiction of porn for a purely completely unemotional momentary high even if their marriage is happy and their sex life wonderful. For a man, psychologically, it is not even remotely in the same galaxy as an affair with a real person. Even if both are infidelity, and they are, I don’t think it is useful to equate them too literally.

Yep. That’s it. We’re all “anti husband”. Bad husband! Hate husband!

Or…a more sane interpretation: We don’t think that a spouse is obligated to shut up and tolerate infidelity. Uninstalling accountability apps, blaming her, trying to justify it by claiming it brings partners closer, saying so and so’s wife doesn’t mind, etc (read the thread) does not show contrition, a desire to change, or even minimal concern for what he’s doing to his wife. Sorry, but these are not the actions of a loving or faithful spouse.

By the way, if I violated my marriage vows and shrugged off not only the violation but the pain it caused my husband, I would not expect him to “drop it”, but I would expect it to drastically change our relationship.

Seems my post has stirred up quiet a hornets nest. I didn’t mean to let it go as in act like everything is okay. But constantly nagging and blowing up on a guy isn’t going to make him listen.
I could only WISH to let it go. This has me thinking I need a councillor… Anxiety meds, wine, something. I’m so hyper paranoid every time he picks up his phone. I’ve hidden the laptop s and tablets… I’m freaked out when he’s at work with an unattended computer. If he doesn’t answer my first thought these days is “oh no, what’s he doing?” I can’t get it out of my head!!! And I can’t resist having my endless stream of questions answered. I’m a basket case.
You have a right to be paranoid, because of what he did. What you need to do is find a constructive way to deal with it together. Don’t get too worried about the computer being “unattended”. Most companies monitor their employees internet, even when using icognito browsers.

I’m so sorry to hear what you’re going through, Farmerswife. It hurts so much to even read your posts. I’ve been experiencing the same thing in my marriage for many years, unfortunately. My husband wasn’t apologetic and apparently sees nothing wrong in it. It just hurts a wife to the absolute core of her being. You’re definitely not alone, unfortunately, and please don’t feel as if it’s your “fault.” It truly isn’t. It’s his sin. There’s a support group here at CAF titled, “Women Suffering Because of Unchastity,” (see top tool bar under “groups”) which deals with this specific issue. It has helped me a lot over the years and might be beneficial to you as well. You and any other women reading this and experiencing the effects and pain may wish to join as well.
Please know that you will be in my prayers for strength. May Our Lady of Sorrows also help intercede to Our Lord for you and your marriage.

As a man who has struggled with this sin at times I can tell you:
  1. it does NOT mean he doesn’t love you
  2. it does NOT mean he isn’t attracted to you
  3. it does NOT mean he doesn’t enjoy relations with you
  4. it does NOT mean he wants to replace you with someone else
None of the above excuses the sin. It is still a betrayal, but psychologically porn and a relationship with a real woman are completely different worlds for a man. At least in my experience there is nothing real, nothing emotional about porn- it is purely addictive pleasure of the moment. The woman on the other end doesn’t exist. Objectively it is infidelity but to the man caught up in it it doesn’t feel like it.
This is probably the best post on this thread that pertains to the view point of the man…

It’s a meaningless list though. It may make the husband feel less culpable for what he’s doing but it doesn’t change the fact that while it’s a physical turn on for him, it’s a major physical turn off for a woman. She can do her best to forgive and forget and suppress her disgust, but there’s a very physical aspect to a womans high regard for her husband. It’s very hard to live a fully giving love when you lose that high regard for a man.

It may not be psychologically the same as an affair for a man, but for a woman it is. And, as you pointed out in the beginning of this post, Jesus Himself has said, “You have heard that it was said,
You shall not commit adultery.
But I say to you,
everyone who looks at a woman with lust
has already committed adultery with her in his heart."

To a wife, it is emotionally and psychologically THE SAME. It may not be physically, with all of those ramifications. If priests have told you ‘it’s a very different animal’; well, yes- it’s not the same as actually having sex with a real person, but it’s still a grave moral sin, and a grave offense to the marital bond. The person doing the sinning is in mortal sin, not venial; and if they are non-repentant, it breaks the trust and the relationship just as if they were actually ‘doing it’ with an actual person. So, from a woman’s point of view, I beg to differ.

@LongingSoul - make no mistake, I am with you 100%. My praising of the other post was merely that - praise. It is the best post on the thread on what’s going on inside a guy’s head who has a pornography problem.

It by no means lessens the wrong he’s done or the hurt he’s caused.

This is exactly why porn can be that much more damaging then an actual affair.

She regards it as an affair and feels just as betrayed as if she caught her husband in a physical relationship with another woman. She has the exact same reaction.

Unfortunately…her husband can’t see why she is so hurt. For him…it’s not an affair or anything close to an affair.
He has a difficult time feeling sorry for what he has done.

The sin is still the same…it’s our reactions that make all the difference in the world.

Personally, I’m a woman and I know my husband is guilty of this sin. For me, it’s not adultery. I don’t feel the same kind of betrayal that a lot of women would feel.

But I understand. She is devastated. It’s literally no different then the reaction I would have if I found out my husband was intimate with someone else.

What it comes down to is that this couple needs counseling…desperately. They need to be able to meet in the middle and see each other from an objective point of view.

I’m not justifying his behavior. It’s a very serious sin that needs to stop immediately. He needs to go to confession and stop it.

But they both need counseling…big time.

It doesn’t make the husband less culpable, but it may help the wife to understand her husband. I’m not a woman, so perhaps I am completely off base, but wouldn’t it be better to know that your husband does not love another, has not lost interest in you…than to know that he DOES love another and he HAS lost interest in you as is often the case with a “real” affair? Yes, pornography is always a horrible and heartbreaking betrayal, but surely there is some value in understanding what’s going on in the husband’s mind?

I understand that for the woman it may feel the same as a real affair. I get that. I just thought that possibly with time understanding what’s going on in the husband’s head may help with the healing process.
I was the victim of unfaithfulness of another sort and as a man I couldn’t move on until I understood exactly what was going on inside my partner’s head. Without that full understanding I wouldn’t have healed one iota. Maybe its different for a woman.

No, I personally don’t think that information has any significant value to the wife. The reality remains that his first love is his porn and his wifes experience is always sacrificed to his addiction. If you read literature on abusive husbands they claim to love their wife because it controls her and keeps her submissive and tied to the relationship. It’s a sign of unhealthy co-dependence to rely on that dynamic.

The aspect that his words can’t control is her high regard for him that comes with being a wife. It’s a really precious thing about the marriage relationship and its not something that can be controlled by words that have no basis in reality.

Perhaps the list of words might help her to take it less personally but it doesn’t solve the problem of her naturally diminishing respect and high regard for him. That’s still going to erode the marriage.

Wow I didn’t log on for a day, what a mess, lol!
OK I’ll try to respond and update all at once… Firstly thank you all again. It’s most comforting to know I’m not alone and that this is not an illegitimate problem.

Second, I love DH with my whole heart and soul, I always have. I took for granted that things were OK, we practice NFP for the most part and I thought things were fine in our intimate life… No we dont swing from chanaliers anymore, but I thought it was satisfying and comfortable. I think what he meant was that we don’t have that “new love” anymore, we don’t always cuddle while we watch TV or hold hands at the store. I’m actively trying to fix that.

To my own defense, IT WAS LAST SUNDAY that I found d out about all this, its raw, new, deep pain!!! Not even a week ago! How soon am I supposed to drop it!?

So we have talked, a lot, rationally… And otherwise, but I’m a bit more at peace with it. The dust is settling a bit.
  1. I asked and he told me it was always redheads. And admitted that it went farther than looking at pictures more than once. Started out googling “redhead woman,” then “redhead nude” and escalated from there to the vulgar words I saw he had typed after redhead. The redhead aspect really bothers me, for whatever reason. I have temporary hair dye coming from eBay as well as some other things to spice things up, I hope. Why is my brown hair so wrong, its got natural blonde highlights and no gray yet, amazingly!? Why didn’t he marry a redhead if that’s his #1desire? Things like that. 😦 so there’s a beautiful redhead on 2 of our favorite sitcoms, guess they’re out forever now. The age and body bothers me too but for some reason I’m stuck on the hair. Never been into hair salons and makeup and he always liked that about me, so he said. Back in my young and wild days, before I returned to the church, I sent him some risque photos of myself (I was 20couple and my body looked like these girls back then) and he had them available to use IM THE NEXT ROOM but still chose the full out pornographic genital photos of redheads to use for his pleasure. I will never, until I die, understand this or get over it. I will forgive and eventually move on, but I’ll never forget, and always be scared.
  2. this has, if nothing else, opened up our communication. We have talked, asked, admitted things, both of us. We are working to fix this. He knows that he just used his only “get out if jail free card” and if he falls again, knowing what this has done for me, I will leave him. And I am will, I am ashamed to say. He swears it will not.l happen again, Time will tell. I did not lock down the net, but I am keeping the accountability software active. We have also become more intimate, although it sort of bothers me, its also healing in a way-- its been helping me feel closer to him, and I hope, him to me.
  3. no, its not technically cheating. But it does feel like it because he obviously wants sex with someone else! He says he doesn’t. But I’ve seen the phone screen, he admitted the masturbation, using their pictures! It guts a woman to find out that she’s no longer good enough, after giving up so much of herself to him. I keep asking why, he doesn’t know, he tells me “something just snapped in my head” and I have no idea what that means. He tells me sex to a guy is different from love, that mars and venus thing, about how he only wants to be with me… So I ask if he wants sex with someone else and he says no only me… Which brings me full circle to “then WHY did you do this to us???”
I’m not over it or letting it go, but I am with all my heart trying to press forward and get past it. I’m going through hell, so I plan to keep on going. I’m not giving up my marriage to Satan’s horrible industry without a fight.

I think the two of you are handling it much better know. The important thing is to move past the hurt and anger and actually talk. While your feelings are perfectly justified, you wont get anything done with anger.

I’m not a marriage counselor, but given the timeline I’ve gleaned from your posts, I think your progressing just fine. Your both working on building a better relationship, with better communication. I don’t think there’s any problem with the accountability apps (especially if you have one on your phone that he has the password for, you got the password for the one on his phone). You’ve made your terms quiet clear and now it will just take time, to trust again, and for you both to recover from this. There are no quick fixes for trust and the pain this has caused. Your both probably looking at a while of hell, but just keep the other close and your eyes on Christ, the Bible, and your family and I am sure you two will be okay.

Yeah. I’m trying. I still ask questions daily about it, most of them are simply “why?” In hopes that I get a straight answer and maybe some closure. …for any men reading this “I don’t know” isn’t a valid answer after something of this magnitude.

The rooms in our home and barn that he admitted he did it in feel tainted, we remodeled them together and now its just weird. I hope that goes away too. I have my doubts about his honesty over the duration of this problem. I’m kind of bugging him because I don’t believe him but on the other hand, at this point, its all in vain. Seems like getting answers I can believe helps me cope, I can file the info away after i feel the sting and go about my day.

We went to Walmart and I felt like I had to watch his eyes, seemed like every time we passed an attractive girl he looked. But he probably looked at everyone, I’m guessing that part is my hypersensitivity to this, again.

Also I feel like I should mention I’ve typed every post from my cell so please forgive my typos!

Million dollar question is what NOW? therapy? Doubt he’ll go. I feel like I can’t get it completely behind me until I do something proactive like that. And if it does happen again, I dont even want to think about what will happen. The other scary part is I never fully understood the threat porn/internet posed until this, I’ve got young kids to protect too.

It’s all so hard to deal with and so avoidable… So much unnecessary heartache is caused by an action because he wanted to “feel good now.” I wish that the whole porn industry would just burn to the ground. I know this will cause problems in the future too, as he will want to go to bachelors parties and things like that… But we will cross those bridges when we come to them.

I’m worried he’s giving it up all at once cold turkey, and claiming he’s had no desire to look. I’m thrilled, I’m just worried because it doesn’t seem to add up.

Ok, rambling again. Just got a foot of snow last night to deal with, happy shoveling, all!
