MSNBC’s Morning Joe rains hell on right-wing Christians for choosing Trump’s 'blasphemy' over Christ's teachings

That too is speculative.
Really? Which of the democratic candidates is not pro-choice?
And even still, it does not cause abortions. Abortions are caused directly by women who choose it and to some extent their friends that encourage them to do it.
If abortion were illegal, the vast majority of abortions conducted today would not occur. As stated above, no law is 100% effective which is why we have the legal system.
It is quite possible that Democrats would do better at convincing them to avoid abortion.
Except that they all explicitly encourage killing babies in the womb. Why would they advocate for something that goes against their customer base (PP)?

That is not what I said was speculative. What I said was speculative was the claim that electing a Democrat is sure to result in more aggressively pro-abortion legislation.

That too is speculation, and unrealistic speculation at that. Even if Roe v. Wade is overturned, the states themselves would have to make it illegal. Do you think California or New York are going to do that? And if someone in Montana wants an abortion, how hard is it to travel to such a state? And if all states made it illegal (extremely unlikely) they could still travel to Canada, or resort to chemical abortions that do not require a clinic. However if you convince women that we support their efforts in bringing forth new life 100%, that will bear fruit immediately. When the people are behind such an effort, it will be much easier - and less dramatic - to move to make it illegal finally. At least that is how I see it. I do not insist that others see it exactly as I do. But I do claim that the way I see it is not in conflict with Catholic teaching.

False. They have allowed. They have not encouraged it.

That is Catholic teaching. This is allowed by the prudential judgement of the Catholic.

(Please Note: This uploaded content is no longer available.) Ridgerunner:
Not true. “Prudential judgment” is not subjectivism or relativism.

Nor did I say any such concern justifies abortion.
Good.
I do claim it can justify a disbelief that voting for a Republican will make a significant dent in abortions.
But that isn’t the yardstick, is it? If a certain evil which CAN be combatted outweighs all others, do you really question whether we ought to fight it, even for the sake of combatting lesser eviles. Among other things, one ought also to consider the extreme unlikelihood of the Dem party suddenly developing a genuine concern for the poor or whatever “systemic injustices” are.

I don’t think so, and here is why. If a certain evil - a very serious evil like abortion - CAN be combated to a certain small degree, and a lesser evil (like gross corruption in the executive office) can be combated to a much greater degree, it might be a proportionate reason to chose the battle that seems more likely to be won first, and then turn our attention to the much harder battle of combating abortion.
Among other things, one ought also to consider the extreme unlikelihood of the Dem party suddenly developing a genuine concern for the poor or whatever “systemic injustices” are.
That of course is debatable - a debate I do not wish to have at this time. Suffice it to say that faithful Catholics can fall on both sides of that debate.

“The problem with evangelicals is that they’ve gone from caring about the gospel to caring about the halls of power, to judges and so on…”

or put another way:

“That’s right, religulous people, go back to your silly book and leave the political power to us”, quoth the leftists.

The Catholic Church considers abortion an intrinsic evil. The Democratic Party considers abortion an intrinsic right which must be supported, protected, and never limited, at any stage of development up to and maybe even including birth. It seems the Catholic view and the Democratic view are irreconcilable. On abortion I think that Evangelicals are pretty close to the Catholic view.

That is true only if abortion was the only issue at stake.
True. There are many issues, abortion is but one.

But we then have to ask ourselves what we are deciding is of higher importance than this issue.

What exactly is the worth of the unborn?
How can anyone claim anything but placing that value when trying to claim other issues are as pressing as that of the unborn being murdered?

That is not the question. If an issue is of higher importance, but there is little we can do about, then we can legitimately consider other issues.

There is no virtue in allowing evil.
I didn’t say there was.

Then you may want to clarify exactly what you are trying to communicate.

You seem to wish everyone to look upon some distinction between allowing and evil and propogation of said evil.
But in fact, these are both evil.

But voting democrat is absolutely certain to result in more aggressive pro-abortion legislation.
Are you also against gun control because the people who use them to kill others are the ones responsible for the murders? Outlawing guns won’t make a significant dent in violent gun deaths either.

The Guttmacher Institute article I linked to disagrees with you.

Abortion Protections

As legislators in other states attack abortion rights, progressive state legislators are responding to a more conservative U.S. Supreme Court by enacting protections and expanding availability. In 2019, nine states took major steps to protect or expand abortion access and governors in five states vetoed abortion restrictions passed by the state legislature.
Again, the question is not which is the greater injustice. The question is proportionate reasons. One such reason could be the belief that the President who promises to oppose abortion also is the President who poses an existential threat to the nation.
I couldn’t find where you answered my question in the first place. Was it removed?

The president hasn’t just promised to oppose abortion. He has done so. The various things he has done have been pointed out many times on this forum.

If what you’re saying is that you would rather be legally killed in a horrific manner or have that happen to someone you love dearly than have a president that you believe poses an existential threat to the nation, then by all means, vote your conscience.

Again, Your words:
Those who refuse to have our government correct injustice are ignoring the victims of injustice.

Not everything. There is one area they have not touched. That is offering free pre-natal and delivery services to all pregnant women, regardless of complication, and regardless of their means. They could do that right now, even with Roe v. Wade.
Are they offering free health care to everyone regardless of complications and regardless of their means, or are they just refusing pregnant women?

We can cast our vote for candidates that will work to change the current abortion laws.

Trump is a prime example.
You are certainly entitled to do that.

This distinction is made in many places. Here is one from the Archdiocese of Philadelphia:

It appears that you apply them selectively.
This statement was unnecessary. I don’t know anything about you except what you post on these forums. I’ll remove it from my post.

I apologize for my uncharitable remark. Truly, I am sorry.
