MSNBC suspends Imus simulcast for two weeks

The bottom line is Sharpton and Jackson are using these poor girls as a catalyst to boost their popularity and to climb up on their soapboxes. They are no better than Imus. This is just an example fools running their mouths to get attention, and both parties are guilty. I bet after these two weeks are up, Imus will have high ratings. Sad.

The only victims in this debate are the Rutgers Basketball Team, they were subjects of an unprovoked attack.
 
I find Imus to be neither intellectual or comedic. This ethnic slur is just another spouted by Imus over the years, only more egregious. A white bigot asking a black bigot for forgiveness is pathetic and ironic. Advertisers are pulling out and Imus’ days are numbered. I don’t know why the Rutgers girls are meeting with this redneck. And John McKean continues to implode by saying he will continue to guest on the show.
 
Remember free speech? Imus is allowed to speak his mind, If its airways problem then Rosie, Bill Mahr, Jay Leno, pretty much most ot them should all be toasted. Lets see what about the rappers and those who sing hateful music.

Ok what else is hateful oHH right saying your God is the only one, righttt thats hateful. So lets toss off those awful intolerant Christians including those Catholics and while were at it the Jews are pretty one sided too. Off with them.

(what he and others say is untasteful but I would defend their right to say it, I just dont have to listen) And if anyone thinks these things like these over the top reactions are firstly going to be settled by canning one man think again. Its just the start, then the war will be on, until all who are intolerant are purged.

Also Imus said hed go away for 2 wks talk to the team who in the press conferece this morning didnt stoop to condeming Imus they want to dialogue with him to help him know them. He said he has a powerful show and is going to change it and can reach people.

I see a wonderful chance of reconcilation if Gods love is allowed to flow, because that would be the source. The Amish forgave the people who killed their children, whats wrong with us? Revenge is the Lords and one can see why He set it up that way.

And remember its the intolerant that are ultimetely the goal to be destroyed, that means Imus types and not forgetting non christians figure the church (catholics, protestants, jews and even muslims are all very intolerant. Thats why they love Rosie.
 
Imus’ words should surprise none of us. He’s been doing this for years. What he said is stupid and racist. He has said lots of stupid and mean things in the past. He should apologize to the girls on the team for his behavior.

And now perhaps Sharpton and Jackson (both of whom are long-time racists) can spend their time going after the rappers who use the exact same language (and worse) to degrade black women in their so-called music. Unfortunately, we’ll never see that happen. We’re still waiting to hear Sharpton apologize to the New York City police officer smeared in the Tawana Brawley scam.
 
I’ve noticed that those who tacitly agree with Imus yank out the “free speech” card. Sure there’s free speech but there are also consequences for it. Anyone can say anything. Those who are bigoted or lack sensitivity should be prepared to pay the price.
 
The necessary thing for Imus to do, when he meets with the Rutgers team, is to apologize. But this is not enough. Imus has a history of using racial slurs on his show. I heard a sound clip yesterday where he pledged, on air, never to use such slurs again - obviously he fell off the wagon.

He needs to make amends. I don’t know exactly what he should do - perhaps set up a scholarship. But it might be a good idea to make the offer and ask the team how he can atone for his cruel comments.
 
They might all be offended by Imus. But think about all the **Rap Stars **that degrade women! Where is Sharpton and the Rev. on those issues? Are they going to call them out to repent.

I agree with this. I just listened to an exchange between Imus and Sharpton, well, I tried, I stopped at the word “aks”. Sharpton used it while attempting to berate Imus.

The word is spelled “a-s-k” and if Sharpton can’t pronounce it he needs a speech therapist. Until he pays attention to the details, I cannot take him seriously.
 
My first uninformed reaction to this was, “what do you expect? He has been saying cynical and cruel things for years” and that he was being victimized by a double standard (Black leaders can impugn white America with vulgar language and are given a soapbox while Imus is taken off his).

Last night I flipped between Fox, CNN, and MSNBC watching the discussion on this issue. During the course of the evening, I reached a few new conclusions:

What do I expect? I expect people to be decent and the greater your soapbox, the standard increases. For him to disparage young women who deserve to be held up as role models is the ultimate in untruth and cruelty. Last night, I watched the interviews of these young women and their poise, decorum and maturity not to return Imus’ insults with insults was quite inspiring.

Is Don Imus what I expect? He is not what I expect and is an egotistical, cynical, man who can be cruel.

What should be done? He should be fired. Those calling for his head (ala Sharpton and Jackson) should be held to the same standard as I want Imus held to. In the future, if they cross the line, they should be no longer invited to discuss issues on the major news networks and radio shows in the US.

I think the way he pronounces it is not uncommon among some portions of the African-American population. I heard it frequently from low-income blacks in the South Side of Chicago. As such, it is simply a linguistic variation similar to regional pronunciations. For example, people in some parts of Nebraska may say “warsh” instead of “wash”. Or, like President Bush, saying “nucular” instead of “nuclear”. I wouldn’t worry about pronunciation unless he spelled it wrong.
 
The biggest thing that upsets me, is that these players think they are victims. Goodness! Are these young ladies trying to tell us they are wanting to be future leaders later. They are not leaders. Leaders lead. Do you have any idea of what the Rev. King might have went through. If you know that you are doing good things, stand on that, goodness you think a old guy on radio, who doesn’t know what he is talking about, is going to ruin all that you have worked for. Who are you? Are you really that insecure? If you want to be a future leader, grow a thinker skin, to be upset by one who has no standing on which to critique you. Maybe what you should do is stand up Imus, and ask Condeleze Rice to come in for a meeting. May goodness, quit lamenting about inequality, and be humble enough to realize you have done good things. I cannot believe that they are saying their whole season was ruined by his comment.

If you ask me, the current hip-hop community has been a bigger cancer, than Imus. Unfortunately by saying that, I do not intent to relativise what Imus said. Imus should have not said what he said. In the end for these ladies I hope his comment get’s it’s proper place, a mere footnote in the biography. They should not let what he says effect them.

These young women have reacted as I hope my daughter would if she was called a whore on national radio/tv.

They conducted themselves with class in the tournament, the excelled at their craft, exceeded expectations, and were singled out for no apparent reason and characterized with a term that is a horrible thing to say about a person who you know. To say it for no apparent reason except that they happen to be of race where the term is used in an anti-social subculture of this nation is appalling and deserves to be condemned.
 
Slur Blacks you get a mimimum two week suspension. Slur Catholics you get hired by the John Edwards campaign.

I can respect that, but this I’ll have to say I’ll part from you. For my children, son or daughter, especially by collage age, should know that the world isn’t always a nice place. The higher the position you go up, the more barbs and arrows will come your way. You need to know yourself enough and have a solid foundation of who you are and what your aims are, that people shouldn’t knock you off your foundation. A lot of the time, they know not of what they are talking about. Their critique has more to say about who they are than who you are.

They know how they did in the tournament. They know who hard they practiced and prepped. They know if they work hard academically. What does Imus know other than how the final game went? If I was their dad, I’d tell them they are disrespecting themselves and their team if Imus changes her idea of what they did. If they want to learn something, I’d say, the meeting with Imus is a trivial matter, they really ought to send a message to the president, asking he helps arrange a meeting between the team and Rice to ask how she deals with it.
 
When I first heard what he said I thought - what an idiot. All that’s transpired since hasn’t changed my opinion.

This frustrates me. There is a double standard depending on WHO is saying it (they’re all idiots to me). When I was in school, people used words for each other that I’d get beat up for if I used the same.

I felt bad for them until I heard this too. Some dummy says something and it “scars you for life” and “steals your moment”. Geez. They should stand up and say “Imus who?”
 
I don’t listen to Imus. I didn’t think anyone watched MSNBC;) … I think he is a crochety old rude bag of flatulence who regularly pushes the envelope. What he said was wrong. Bill Donohue has an interesting read on www.catholicleague.org called Catholic Bashers Spared Imus Treatment.:hmmm:

Hard to believe I would be even remotely simpatico with the likes of Mr. Imus, but the response to his remark (as foul as it was) is very hypocritical in view of the vast amount of similar remarks in mass media made by members of the black community themselves.

So does this mean I am free to call fellow Catholics “Mackerel Snappers” if I had the odd inclination to do so and still be politically correct? :eek:
