Hi everyone,
I try to get on the music forums every now and then to see what people in cyberworld are saying about the Mass music. I come from an Independent Baptist background, and grew up on gospel music where people would sing their hearts out, you could hear not only the melody or soprano’s but the alto’s, the tenors, the baritones and sometime a surpise bass. When I came into the church in 2003 I was really appalled at the lack of singing of our congregation, especially with the teens and children…the songs weren’t that hard to sing…come on

any one can sing the alleluia or the Holy, Holy. What I have learned is this: this is a really small parish in a retirement “based” community, our church is a minority in a sea of evangelical churches…one of the local pastors had the audacity to comment to our priest that if it weren’t for EDIT our CC they wouldn’t have a steady draw into their congregation

. Being it is in a pseudo-rural area, not much music or training takes place at the schools…if you can count H.S. Band,…most of what a lot of kids learn of choir / singing is from their churchs.
As a small parrish we cannot afford to hire an organist, and we rely on 2 people both in their mid to late 60’s to play for our saturday vigil and sunday mass…we did hire an organist over a year ago, but he got a better offer from the presbyterian church which is smaller than ours. We are now up to 4 cantors now that I’ve enlisted and a contemporary group in which I play flute and sing.
On numerous occasion we have tried to get our people interested in forming a choir but no one is even the slightest bit interested.

All in all though, even through the rant (apologies), I still feel so blessed to be where I am at, because there is a lot of work to do, snowballs can get bigger.
One thing our music people have is a sincere, respectful, and profound love of the mass and eucharist and much effort goes into the selection of good orthodox and some contemporary songs that brings the level of worship up into that realm of what words cannot say. Yes we do get discouraged when we don’t see people singing during the mass, yes we do discouraged when we hear kids say, “the music at 1st baptist is soooo good and exciting”…and we take advantage of that statement to remind them what they are coming to mass for!
I still have a lot to learn about liturgical music, I have seen as some previous posters said, that some churchs have phenominal music, choir, a trained choir director, a highly trained organist that knows how to play a pipe organ. I find it so inspiring and helpful and I bring some of that back with me to my little parish.
So in the meantime, as my granddad said, we’ve got a long row to hoe.
Peace
Virginia
