Hi all,
Have not posted in a while. Hope all of you are continuing to be lifted up by this wonderful ministry of ours.
I’m wondering what Mass parts are going to be used when we change over to the new wording the first Sunday of Advent.

Now, put those tomatoes down please.:o

There are several new settings offered thru OCP and GIA that are nice as well as revised old favs.

Just curious. Our Parish is changing back to Gather (from Journeysongs) so we will probably use one from there. I hope the congregation will be receptive. It will be a great deal of new music that we will be throwing at them. I ask God to help us choose the right settings that will uplift them all.

Personally, I am leaning towards the setting by the late Richard Proulx, A Community Mass; however, I think that we should try to learn the ICEL settings, since these are the default ones that are actually going to be within the Roman Missal itself.

The Chant Cafe has a great tutorial on these settings. These can be chanted without any accompaniment and are fairly easy.

I did not really care much for the OCP settings, nor a great deal of the new stuff that GIA released. Frankly, I was expecting better from GIA. The thing is that the texts of these prayers are grand and noble and the music should reflect the beauty and the dignity that these revised prayers are meant to convey.

Has Mr. Proulx’s Mass been revised to reflect the new wording? I’m leaning toward chosing a revised setting to ease the transition. Proulx’s Community Mass is one that has been around for a long time so it is definately a consideration if it has been revised. I know he has passed away so I’m not sure if he was able to facilitate the changes.

We liked Curtis Stephan’s and Dan Schutte’s new settings from OCP. The GIA settings were just ok. We’d have to improvise some new harmonies to make some of them our own musically.

Is everyone celebrating the Ascension of the Lord this coming Sunday instead of Thursday?
Just wondered if this is optional.

The reason why I am strongly in favor of Proulx and ICEL is that the Gloria is chanted/sung is not responsorial. Furthermore, in cases where there is no music, these can be chanted/sung without accompaniment.

I also expected much better from GIA, and also was not suprised with OCPs usual non-sacred sacred music. The only decent settings I saw were Community Mass, Mass for the City, and German Mass.

But seriously? Did you hear the “Unity Mass” gloria? Makes me want to puke, to think people may play this trash in a church.

All of the music directors here (As well as our priests and liturgy committee) agree that using a revision will make the transition MORE difficult. When the “yahweh” wasn’t allowed anymore, I sing “I lift up my soul” with “To you father” instead of yahweh. It has taken me this long to get into the habit. There will be muscle memory that goes along with the music and the new wording will make it awkward. I DO want to bring back the revised masses at a later time, but I think using new mass settings at least the first couple years is best.

That makes great sense. Hadn’t thought of it that way. We don’t even do Schutte’s old fav ‘You are near’ any more. Don’t really miss it. It was not one of my favorites.

we were directed by our Pastor 2 years ago to stop using ‘responsorial-type’ Glorias anyway so we won’t even bother with the new settings that use that style. Chanting sounds like a pretty safe way to go and it sure brings back a sweet solemnity to the service.

There is only one new setting from OCP that I like. Have you heard Christopher Walker’s Belmont Mass? Here’s a snippet of the Gloria:

The ones from GIA are horrendous, I think, besides Richard Proulx’s A Community Mass.

I shudder with “One Spirit, One Church” as it totally ruins “Come, Holy Ghost”.

This is what I would pick if called to sing:

Entrance: Come, Holy Ghost
Offertory: Veni Creator Spiritus
Communion: Draw Us in the Spirit’s Tether
Recessional: Go Make of All Disciples

This is nice. I like that the organ accompaniment is very simple and the vocal range stays in the middle of the voice.
 
I also have always liked the Proulx arrangement of Schubert’s Deutsche Messe. They do have a revised 2010 version of it. Our parish sings it very well. We usually do it during the Christmas season and only with organ, although we also do it for weddings when a string quartet is hired along with the organ. Whenever I suggest mass parts to bridal couples, many automatically gravitate to this one as well.

We take the tempi a little faster because this was originally for a choir set to different text which could handle a slower tempi, but it’s just not ideal for a congregation and the mass text just doesn’t work as well at this tempo. And you know, it always seem like the choirs they use for these samples always have the wimpiest sound. It makes everything, even the more bombastic pieces, sound totally blah. It’s probably so the musicians can get just get an idea of the music itself.

I think my music director picked it again this year because of my total disregard of the song, which I showed him last year.

And i sure do agree. The samples they offer sometimes make me want to just go hug my choir and tell them how much i appreciate them!
