Music Leader Thread Part III - Song Lists, Suggestions, and Comments

I may try O God, Our Help in Ages Past if called on to sing again. From what I read elsewhere, this is supposed to be our national hymn.

I thought “God of Our Fathers” was the national hymn?

Speaking of Spanish music, “Pescador de Hombres” is selected for my parish next weekend.

You might be right on that one. I guess I really fell in love with O God, Our Help in Ages Past having sung it at the SLC conference in Houston in January. It was so good to have sung real sacred music during those three days. I might be going back to Houston for a Catholic bloggers convention, which means that I might be visiting Our Lady of Walsingham again!!! Their music was grand!!!

I have expressed wishes that “Pescador de Hombres” be banned from my funeral liturgy. I may have to have a provision in my will for a priest friend from Rome to celebrate the Mass so as to ensure that the song will not appear anywhere near me.

Incidentally, I have reviewed the third edition of Flor y Canto, having posted the reivew on my blog. It was excrutiatingly painful. There were only three good hymns in the lot. I tried very hard to be charitable, but, it was hard.

I realize that I may seem to be a musical hardliner, but, part of the problem is that I believe that we need to recover our precious heritage of sacred music. The celebrant from the second Mass made that observation about the need for recovery. We’ve allowed questionable genre to creep in that it is incompatible with the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. It’s not so much the fault of the musicians as it is the priests and bishops who should know better and not abdicate their authority to the puiblishing houses.

I don’t understand why this one is so popular for funerals.
I need to make a note of it somewhere so somebody knows NOT to sing it at my funeral. I used to like this song, but then it got overplayed so much that I just got irritated. Sort of like “Gather Us in”, which I never liked in the first place, but I haven’t heard that in two years.

I may have to have a provision in my will for a priest friend from Rome to celebrate the Mass so as to ensure that the song will not appear anywhere near me.

Maybe I can manage to have someone to place a number of copies in your coffin.

Speaking of Flor y Canto, the new issue of Today’s Liturgy has it advertised on the back of it’s cover, and I had to laugh because of what you said about it earlier. 200 new titles? I would’ve had to wash my ears out after all that.

I don’t blame you. I generally like the stuff picked out at my parish and the music director is so awesome, but some of the stuff is just “bleh.”

I don’t know if you’ve heard Schutte’s “Our Hope Is in the Lord”, but it’s not that bad.

However, “Table of Plenty” focuses mostly on the horizontal and treats the vertical aspect of the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass in passing. The Solemnity of Corpus Christi calls for music that should take into account the vertical aspect of the august mystery that we are commemorating on that day.

I usually incorporate both aspects on this feast day. In fact, it is one of the few times I will use some songs that are Eucharistic in name.

That is why “At that First Eucharist” works well because it takes both into account much better than “Table of Plenty”.

Yes, but knowing this can arm us against relying too much upon OCP and GIA for decisions. We do not have to give in to every song in the hymnal. We sure do not have to give in to the crazy numbering system they use. I would say I would be willing to use less than half of their communion songs for actual communion. However, I may start using some for entrance and exits.

I know the feeling. When I chose “At That First Eucharist”, some enlightened soul at OCP renamed the hymn and then changed up the first verse. The celebrant was frustrated because he couldn’t find it and because OCP edited the verses. I was mad, too, but, I had to wing it as best I could.

TOP is a great guitar song, but I love the piano arrangement of the intro/refrain in Spirit and Song. It’s one of the few times I play (mostly) what’s on the page

If you are thinking of using some patriotic hymns this weekend, I’d go with “God of Our Fathers” (the National Hymn), and “This Is My Song” (to the tune of “Be Still, My Soul”).

Still agonizing over the list for this weekend, but I’m leaning towards, “America the Beautiful” because of the first reading… ("…dominion shall be from sea to sea and from the River to the ends of the earth…") Sometimes that’s all it takes to push the pendulum!

If anyone here is doing “America, the Beautiful” but looking for a new arrangement, check out the one by Dan Galbraith on Praisecharts. I use his chord changes and general rhythm scheme, but scrap the “bridge” if we use the song as a recessional.

Anyone here use Jeremy Young’s “We Shall Rise Again” regularly? Great for this coming weekend. If anyone wants a band arrangement, let me know!

Oh my gosh!!! You are doing the Tallis “Spem in Alium”? It is one of the most unearthly pieces of choral music I’ve ever heard. I love it. Your choir must be quite good to do that.

I think God of our Fathers is the National hymn of the Armed Forces but also comes up as the hymn of the USA as well. We will be offering it this weekend. Last year when we did it you could see all the vets getting a bit taller as they sang. Very moving.
Not sure if we will be doing God bless America (Celine Dion’s version). May not be appropriate at offertory even tho it fits perfectly time-wise.

There is something rather fascinating about this Sunday’s first reading as it foretells Christ’s triumphant entry into Jerusalem. The Gospels that are proclaiimed during the Palm Sunday procession reference this prophecy.

If called to cantor, this is what I have planned:

Entrance Processional: I Heard the Voice of Jesus Say
Offertory: At the Name of Jesus (GIA Worship III version)
Communion: Shepherd of Souls
Recessional: O God, Our Help in Ages Past

The Mass setting would be:
Gloria: A New Mass for a Congregation:
The rest: A Community Mass by Richard Proulx

Absolutely love “This is my Song.” Finlandia just tugs at so many hearts. It is one of those annointed melodies that make us…remember.
Putting these two songs in the same Liturgy will be inspiring for sure.

No. We have not heard any word yet. The Gloria is the name of the setting (which dates back to 1970). I am happy that it has been adapted for the revised translation.

What my parish will be doing is learning the ICEL settings first. The USCCB did leave the door wide open for the local Ordinary/Metroplitan to begin gradual implementation in September, though. The USCCB was concerned that the people needed some sort of transitional process. The UK is way ahead of us on this one.

I would love to start early, but I don’t think that we will use the new translation until the First Sunday of Advent at my parish.
