Music Leader Thread Part III - Song Lists, Suggestions, and Comments

I’m getting ready for a rather Baptist selection for Mass this Weekend. I am going to use:

We Gather Together
Amazing Grace
Eat This Bread
Where Charity and Love Prevail
Shall We Gather at the River

It is not intentionally this way, but I really don’t want to use some of the Advent songs that might fit in with this weeks Gospel. Hmmm. Isn’t there some hymn about trampling out the vintage where the grapes of wrath are stored? 😃 Hey, it’s better than Johnny Cash’s Ring of Fire (I actually mentioned using that once to my priest, but that was before he had learned my weird sense of humor)

Haha. That’s great. I never really thought of Advent songs fitting in with this week’s Gospel. Normally I think about doing them near the end of the Liturgical Year as the readings start to focus moreso on the end times. I mean, it’s not bad singing Advent hymns in early November as opposed to mid-July. 😃

I have to go to an installation Mass at a different parish tomorrow, so I’m interested to see what music they’re doing. If they don’t have a choir, our choir is going to sing. It should be interesting.
 
Here’s what was done today at my former parochial vicar’s installation Mass:

Processional Hymn: #381 The Summons KELVINGROVE
Preparation of the Gifts: #493 Prayer of St. Francis Temple
Communion Hymn: #519 Pescador de Hombres/Lord, You Have Come Gabarain
Recessional Hymn: #439 O God, Our Help in Ages Past ST. ANNE

The music wasn’t that bad, but the Alleluia was from Mass of Glory

The music does appear to be less than spectacular, especially the first three and anything from the Mass of Glory.

Maybe this would have been better:

Entrance: The Church’s One Foundation
Offertory: Father, We Thank Thee Who Has Planted or You are a Priest Forever
Communion: Alleluia, Sing to Jesus or Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silence
retain the recessional

I had to make a change to what I had planned for yesterday’s Mass:

Entrance: Word of God, Come Down on Earth
Offertory: Father, We Thank Thee Who Hast Planted
Communion: I Received the Living God
Recessional: There’s a Wideness in God’s Mercy

I maintained the Grail Psalter for the psalm verses.

The first two were okay to some extent, but then I got to “Pescador de Hombres” and was like :rolleyes:

The Summons and the Sebastian Temple piece are two that I really can’t stand and, well, you know how I feel about the third. At least with the new GIRM now in force, maybe that will help clean up some of the really bad music out there, since the GIRM is now stating “liturgical chant” for the Entrance and Communion.
 
At my parish, we sing the communion proper and offertory proper in English. We’ll start adding in the Entrance proper after awhile.

Right now, the way things go, we sing the communion proper while the priest receives communion and the EMUs receive, then we begin the communion hymn.

At the offering, we sing a hymn during the collection and switch to the offertory proper while the deacon takes the gifts to the altar and continue roughly through the lavabo.

When we begin the Entrance chant, we’ll probably sing a short processional hymn and then sing the entrance proper as the priest and deacon, ect. ascend to the altar.

All the propers we’re using right now are english chant settings of the propers from the Graduale Romanum, with psalm verses. Now that my choir is used to doing this we will start singing the psalm verses in four part harmony.

What resources do you use? It sounds like the American Gradual.

That is my understanding of it. Here is how the Chant Cafe sees it.

If this, in fact, is what will happen, then this can only be a good change. It will actually have us singing the Mass than simply singing at Mass. I realize that this might not sit well with proponents of the Praise and Worship genre, but, this revision in the GIRM, which is significant, will bring us into a more authentic understanding of the role of proper liturgical music and it also serves to underscore what Pope Benedict XVI wrote in Sacramentum Caritatis when he covered the issue of liturgical song.

Based on what the GIRM is saying, it seems that the idea is to help restore chant to it’s rightful place. I also agree with The Chant Café on this one.

Please don’t forget that hymns or other songs, in both froms (OF and EF) are the EXCEPTION, not the NORM. The propers, with their chant melodies from the Gradual are the norm. When you keep that in mind, this isn’t all that surprising.
 
Of course, with this new translation of the GIRM, you, of course, could use something like Salve Regina (for a marian Mass) or Regina Coeli (during easter), but it clearly is a reference to the propers.

These would be appropriate for the recessional.

One last thing: It applies to the offertory too:

Wow. I’ve been leading music in the Catholic Church for over 40 years. Guess I’m going to have to re-invent my style.

Here are three resources to begin singing the propers in english. I would highly reccemend these to anyone.

Simple english propers (simple melodic adaptations of the Latin propers)

The American Gradual (Translations of the latin propers, but retaining the melody of the original)

Simple Choral Gradual (Choir adaptations of the propers, in english)

Not necessarily. The GIRM released in 2003 was a provisional GIRM. The GIRM that is now out is the one that is the “permanent version” for lack of a better word.
