But did the word in question change in the GIRM or was it just the translation of the word that changed? It is my understanding that nothing of substance has really changed, but rather it is just this chant organization that is promoting this as a change. I have read nothing about this from the actual Catholic Church.

This is problably where the CDWDS, itself, is heading. Bear in mind that in Sacramentum Caritatis, Pope Benedict XVI used some pretty strong words about the music that is currently out there.

Tomorrow, I’ll be singing, God willing, at my dad’s parish. The pastor is still a little weak from surgery, so he’s asked me to keep the entrance brief. I am considering chanting the entrance antiphon since he will be entering the sanctuary from the sacristy.

This is what I have in mind:

Entrance Processional: Antiphon (Simple English Propers)
Offertory: Where Charity and Love Prevail
Communion: I Received the Living God
Recessional: Holy God, We Praise Thy Name

This will be the first time, to my knowledge, that the propers will actually be sung down here.
 
I recorded myself singing with the SEP tutorial video. I am going to keep playing it until I get it down. It’s not that hard, but, since I don’t read music, this tutorial is a God-send!

Look, if I can remember how “Rio” from Duran Duran goes after 27 years, this should be easy.

I think chanting the SEP introit without psalm verses is a great idea if you need to keep it short. It might not hurt to check out the psalm verses, just in case…

Have you ever considered chanting the other propers (with or without verses) before the hymns (ie, at the offeretory, and at priest’s communion, sing the SEP antiophon, directly followed by the hymn)?

Since I don’t read music, I have to concentrate on learning one thing at a time. I did consider it, but, it’s kind of overwhelming right now. I am just hoping to get this right tomorrow.

I have the same limitation. Right now, by far, my biggest priority is deciding on, and learing, music for the revised Mass translation slated to begin this November.

I went to a church here in Virginia Beach, and this is what they did:

Gather was the hymnal used.

Processional: Praise, My Soul, the King of Heaven LAUDA ANIMA
Preparation of the Gifts: Prayer of St. Francis Temple
Communion Hymn: Eye Has Not Seen Haugen
Recessional Hymn: Now Thank We All Our God NUN DANKET

The Mass Setting was A Community Mass.

I did and it helped for the Introit; however, given that I had to work on the psalm, I had to improvise my own melody for the Communion Antiphon.

I made history this morning, as I believe my dad’s parish is the first one to have used the propers for the Entrance and Communion. The pastor was pleased with the Antiphon and now, I will be doing them on a regular basis.

This is what I did:

Entrance: Introit (Simple English Propers)
Psalm: Grail Psalter
Offertory: Where Charity and Love Prevail
Communion: Antiphon (SEP)
At that First Eucharist
Recessional: Holy God, We Praise Thy Name

Don’t worry about improvising the antiphon! I’d keep two things in mind:
  1. These are not “official” melodies, so there’s no reason why you can’t change them. They aren’t even in copyright. You sung the propers, and that’s the important thing!!
  2. It seems overly simplistic, but really, no one will know if you improvise!!
