I am just dropping by to say that I arrived in Rome yesterday morning at 9:30 in the morning, and it is really beautiful! We did a Vatican tour yesterday, which means I saw St. Peter’s Basilica, the Sistine Chapel, and the other types of art here in Rome. It’s so beautiful! I also got to see the Trevi Fountain and the Pantheon. Today we toured the Coloseum and the three major basilicas - St. Mary Major, St. John Lateran, and St. Paul. I am so jealous of these here in Rome - their churches are SO beautiful! I love them! I also got to see the tombs of St. Paul and on other person that was a pope (forgot the name :o), but it is just so eye-opening.

Tomorrow we have Mass and a tour in Assisi, so I am sure that that will be beautiful. I’ll try and remember the music line-up, but I think that we get pamphlets or something since I haven’t seen a hymnal in any of the churches that I have visited.

Hey CatholicZ09!!! I’m so happy that you are in Italy right now. I just returned from Italy a couple weeks ago after spending a month there performing in an opera festival. If you have a chance, check out the Civita di Bagnoregio. It’s like no place I’ve ever been. You can only get there via a footbridge. No cars are in the town.

While you were in Assisi, did you have an opportunity to stop by in Spoleto? I spent about a month there for study a few years back and I loved that town and the people.

Have a wonderful time and please keep us posted about the mass music line-up. (Unfortunately, where I was there was no music at the masses and the masses were actually about 20 to 30 minutes long.)

We are going with the ICEL chants at my parish. At the parish where I help out, I am also going to use the ICEL chants as well as the revised Gloria from A New Mass for a Congregation. I just bought the MP3. I like this one because it’s not responsorial.

I am grateful to Jeffrey Tucker and the folks from the CMAA who have put up tutorial videos on the ICEL chants. Even for someone like me who does not read music, these are very helpful and easy to learn.

That is good to know, but, one would not have not known it based on the email that OCP sent out. They were only promoting their stuff, which is more of the same, and that is not necessarily good. 😦

The other thing is that OCP is creating some sort of artificial “need” for bi-lingual settings to “unite your worshipping community.” Sacromentum Caritatis specifically states that in multi-lingual liturgies, Latin should be used. It’s as though OCP has not read the documents and is going by its own ideas and opinions.
 
The first thing I did on with the samples was go through word by word. I was impressed that most setting were totally in line with the words, even correcting previous mistakes. I still struck down a third of the options though off of too much repeating or even minute changes.

My wife’s amazing mother went home to Jesus 2 weeks ago. An incredible lady with an incredible faith. We miss her so…

This is what I have planned for this Sunday:

Entrance: Antiphon from the Simple English Propers
Responsorial Psalm: from the Grail Psalter
Offertory: How Firm a Foundation
Communion: Tu es Christus with verses from the Grail Psalter
Alleluia, Sing to Jesus
Recessional: By All Your Saints Still Striving with Verse 2 from the Chair of St. Peter

The readings today speak to the Petrine Ministry and so it is fitting, I believe, that it would be best to have something that reflects this.
 
This is what I suggest for this Sunday, if one doesn’t use the propers:

Sunday, August 21, 2011—Twenty–First Sunday in Ordinary Time
Entrance: Church of God, Elect and Glorious HYFRYDOL
Offertory: Holy God, We Praise Thy Name GROSSER GOTT
Communion: Ave Maria Schubert
Recessional: Sing with All the Saints in Glory HYMN TO JOY

Oh, H… So sad to hear about your loss. Sending prayers your way. Did you do the music for the funeral liturgy?

Our lists are very similar this week! Same Opening, Response and Closing. We did “Here I Am to Worship” during the preparation and “Here I Am, Lord” during Communion.

Found a great prelude in plain sight (in the Breaking Bread Hymnal!): Give Me Ears to Listen, by Timothy R. Smith. It’s a gem… Anyone else use it? We also sang “Beautiful Savior” (the one by Stuart Townend), “God Has Chosen Me”, “I Am Yours”, “Jesus, Lover of My Soul” and “Jesus, My Everything” as preludes.

I had to make some adjustments to the music for this morning’s Mass. Here is what I used:

Entrance: Simple English Propers for the 21st Sunday in Ordinary Time
Responsorial Psalm: Revised Grail Psalter
Offertory: The Church’s One Foundation
Communion: Antiphon: You are Christ, the Son of the Living God (with verses from Psalm 22) followed by Shepherd of Souls
Recessional: Holy God, We Praise Thy Name

The Communion Antiphon was my English translation of the one used for the Installation Mass of Pope Benedict XVI. The Psalm translation came from the Revised Grail Psalter). I had rehearsed the antiphon with the faithful prior to Mass and it worked.

It is good to put into practice what the revised GIRM has stated concerning the use of liturgical chants instead of songs.

Thank you for the prayers. She was a blessing for sure! Yes, we (her daughter (my wife) and I and our alto) did the music. We did mom’s favorites, Panis Angelicus, be not afraid, Shepherd me, O God, On eagle’s wings and her most favorite, On this day, o Beautiful Mother for prep.
Then at the end, instead of doing a traditional exit song we did her absolute favorite song by her favorite Irish Folk singing group, The High Kings. It is a song done in Irish pubs around the world called “The Wild Rover.” Everyone was clapping and singing along as they laughed and wept. A beautiful send off for a beautiful lady.

We love everything by Timothy R. Smith. Very spiritual young man.

That is the ministry of the Holy Father. The word “Petrine” comes from the name Peter. The Holy Father is the Successor of St. Peter.

Please accept my condolences on the death of your mother-in-law. She and your family are in my prayers.
