Music Leader Thread Part III - Song Lists, Suggestions, and Comments

Interesting weekend here.

For Sunday, I choose:

We Gather Together
Precious Lord, Take My Hand
Take and Eat
Sing of Mary
Blest Be the Lord

However, Saturday night we had an chant, following a two day seminar on Gregorian Chant. We did Holy, Holy, Holy. We chanted the Mass parts in English using the new translation. We exited on Salve Regina. We also had two other Latin chants whose name escapes me.

Preparation: I Have Loved You (#294 CCH) & Seek Ye First (#335 CCH)
Communion: Now At This Banquet (#448 CCH - vs 1, 2, 3) & One Bread, One Body (#433 CCH)
Closing: Glory and Praise to Our God (#299 CCH)

I don’t usually use two songs for the Preparation of the Gifts or Communion, but I know the Saturday Mass will be pretty full, with the school fundraiser following after Mass. I’m also took the weekend off, and my subsititute needs to be able to cover all areas. I usually do a bit of improv when needed, but my subs don’t.

It seems like everyone is gone this weekend! 😃 😉 My music director/organist will be on a cruise this weekend and next weekend, so we will have a sub. I really get used to his playing all the time, and when a sub plays, It feels different because it sounds different from the way he plays. I always tell him that I like his playing better. I guess sometimes we just don’t like change. 🙂

On another note, this past weekend we were supposed to learn Michael Joncas’ “God Is Love”, but since we learned two parts of a new Mass setting, he decided to drop it, and we ended up singing “Christians, Let Us Love One Another”. We are supposed to sing Joncas’ hymn next weekend, and I’m assuming it will be dropped again since he will not be here. It’s kind of sad since that piece is actually kind of nice. 🤷

I am repeating some of the songs, as I am doing a different Mass this week.
 
I was planning Christmas musical suggestions, and this year, the way the Sundays fall, we do not celebrate the Feast of the Holy Family or the Baptism of Our Lord on Sunday. I usually have a lot of room due to these two Sundays to suggest plenty of Christmas hymns/carols, but now I only have Christmas, the Solemnity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of God, and the Epiphany of Our Lord. 😦

I get the planner from OCP, and it has a cycle from Advent-Ordinary Time I (Nov. 27, 2011 - Feb. 19, 2012), so I just go away at it.

At least next year we will be celebrating the Feast of the Holy Family & Baptism of the Lord. I love being able to fit everything in.

I got the song selections from my music director, and we are doing some oldies that haven’t been done in a while (Lo, How are Rose E’er Blooming) for Advent. I’m excited!
 
I forgot to ask. What are you guys doing for the new translation by means of Mass setting? My parish is doing Mass of Christ the Savior from now until Advent, and then we are doing the revised Heritage Mass for Advent, and then we go back to Mass of Christ the Savior for the Christmas season, and then back to Heritage Mass for Ordinary Time I.

We are doing the revised setting of the Proulx Community Mass right now. I don’t know yet what we’ll be doing for the Christmas season. It hasn’t been decided yet.

We will be starting with Mass of Creation. It is the easiest to learn for us of the newest settings, the shortest learning curve, as it were. I have promised my wife that next year we will look to another setting, once we have all the words down, so that we will have two. The Celtic Mass is one that I may go with then.

I am putting Mass of Creation to rest for a while. Starting with Storrington Mass, probably bring Creation back after Christmas.
 
Our bishop has decreed that all churches in our diocese will use one of three settings. (We’re in Canada and the settings are the only three by Canadian composers that have been approved.) Our parish has chosen the one by Fr. Geoffrey Angeles because it seems to fit the needs of our various music groups/congregations the best.

I had been hoping to use a setting by Tony Alonso, but that’ll have to wait until we’re given the go-ahead to expand our repertoire.

Those of you who are using the revised Mass of Creation, I’d love to know how your congregations pick it up. I personally was afraid that it would be MORE confusing being that it is “almost known” (old habits/words hard to break and all that) - I’d love to hear that I’m wrong. 😉

My parish is doing Mass of Spirit and Grace, for now. I would have preferred the ICEL chants, or a more traditional setting, but that’s not my decision. They could have chosen something much worse.

The congregation did not pick it. I did. Here is how. I listened to about thirty and graded each. I discarded any that tampered with the lyrics. I graded down those that I deem too time-consuming for me to learn or that used repetition with lyrics. I came up with the top five and sent out for feedback on them from those most affected. I then took all the information to the priest and deacon, along with my own opinion. They agreed with me.

I going to introduce the Gloria by doing it as a cantor/response. There is only a one phrase change for the congregation to learn. The Holy, Holy has a one word change. Then I am going to use this setting mostly just to teach the words. Next summer, we will add another.

Interestingly enough, independent of my parish, two neighboring parishes arrived at the same decision. I do not think either is currently using Mass of Creation.

I am so sorry - what I meant by “pick it up” was how well the congregation learn it/adapt to the changes. I’m kind of glad for the misunderstanding though; I like hearing how others come to decisions like this.

I agree, although I think a nice break from it (or any of the current settings that a parish knows, for that matter) os a good idea. Introduce it later after everyone is familiar with the revised text.

We were given five settings from our Diocesan Worship office to learn in a year. After having a discussion with one of the music directors on the board, I found it funny that she is choosing something completely different than what the board recommended.
