Music Leader Thread Part III - Song Lists, Suggestions, and Comments

We did “Rain Down” today at my parish, and that has to be one of my least favorite hymns to hear at Mass. My parish loves it, though, so it’s not going anywhere. I just checked, and we’re doing “Gather Us In” next weekend. We haven’t done that in over two years, so I thought that we got rid of it, but it’s back!!! I can’t wait for the week after, though - Christ the King Sunday. All the good Christ the King hymns come out.
 
I love the Advent hymns, and then I love all the Christmas hymns. Luckily all the Christmas hymns don’t stop on Christmas Day in the Catholic Church!

I agree that’s okay to use the Christmas hymns until Epiphany, when of course it’s then time for all the great Epiphany hymns (Brightest and best, O Worship the Lord, As with gladness) . I dislike the way in England and Wales in the RC calander this great feast gets moved to the nearest Sunday. The Anglicans usually celebrate it with a great procession and carol service on the day itself and I wish we still did too.🤷

I will get to do all the Masses this year for Christ the King. Yeah! It’s been a while

I will do the following three in some order.
The King of Glory
To Jesus Christ Our Sovreign King
Crown Him With Crowns.

Also, here is a new resource for those of you who want to implement propers, but can’t.

They’re paraphrased propers set to hymn tunes (long meter, such as OLD HUNDREDTH, DUKE STREET, LAMBILLOTTE, et cetera).

For example, here’s the one for the First Sunday of Advent:

To you, O Lord, I lift my soul
I trust in You, save me from shame.
Let not my foes boast over me.
Save those who trust in you from shame. or Protect the ones who trust your name.

These are good to help transition to propers.

Communion Hymn: Holy, Holy, Holy
Recessional Hymn: O Mother Blest, whom God Bestows

This really deserves it’s own thread.
 
Today, I went to the sixth annual Blue Mass for my diocese. The bishop (who just got back from his ad limina apostolorum visit to Rome, was the celebrant. All the officers present were in dress uniform and processed in immediately before the Mass.

Prelude: Bagpipes (sounded like an improvisation on HYFRYDOL)
Processional: The Star–Spangled Banner THE ANACREONTIC SONG

If it’s any consolation to you, the cantor could barely be heard above the organ and flute. 😛 I could only tell what it was because of the refrain. And they didn’t announce it, so no one sang along.

I wish I was there for that. It sounds awesome. Here is what I did last night

We Gather Together
All that We Have
At That First Eucharist
Christ Be Beside Me
We Walk By Faith

I also changed all the Mass setting except the Gloria to the new Mass of Creation.
 
Our Basilica is having and Lessons & Carols service! Not to replace the Mass or anything, but on Christmas night at around 7:30.

The Anglican Cathedral (hosts the Basilica Choir and then the Anglican choir sing together) has an Anglican/Roman Catholic joint Evensong too on Christmas.

Our boychoir was recently disassembled :bighanky:
