Those hymns are perfect for the Mass!

YES! We’re having a Lessons and Carol Service at our Basilica and I’m SOOOOOOOO excited!
 
I wish our parish did a Lessons and Carols service; however, we do get to listen to the choir sing the traditional Polish/Slovak/Italian Christmas carols 45 minutes before Midnight Mass. That’s always beautiful to hear!

My cathedral is doing Lessons and Carols in honor of its one hundred fiftieth anniversary of dedication.
 
Actually when I said an Advent Carol service, I didn’t mean a Christmas Carol service - which traditionally should be sung on Christmas Eve - I meant a separate Carol service of Advent readings, Motets and hymns. Some churches have this on the evening of the first Sunday in Advent (ie this Sunday coming) and they are very beautiful. One of my favourite anthems is “This is the record of John” by Orlando Gibbons.
 
Today is the feast day of Saint Cecilia, the patroness of musicians and Church music.

Prayer to Saint Cecilia:
Dear Saint Cecilia, one thing we know for certain about you is that you became a heroic martyr in fidelity to your divine Bridegroom. We do not know that you were a musician but we are told that you heard Angels sing. For the Immaculate Conception, I know that it’s preferred not to do Marian hymns during Communion, so I thought “O Come, O Come, Emmanuel” would be appropriate as a hymn for the Eucharist, and it also is a nod to the Advent season.

Yes, we are. It is also called a Lessons and Carols service, though incorrectly, since L&C’s are Christmas Eve services.

Usually they’re sung in places which have high population from the UK and Ireland, such as where I live, where practically 99.99999% of the people are Irish/British/Scottish/Welsh
(somewhere in Canada, not saying on the WWW 😉 )

…The Sisters of St. Joseph will sponsor Marty Haugen’s Vespers on the four Sundays of Advent, beginning Nov. 27 at 4 p.m. in the Mont Marie Chapel, … All are invited.

Umm…that “Vespers” was written for Lutherans. I’m definitely writing to someone about this. But to whom?

I know that Lutherans have Vespers too and celebrate it quite frequently. I once went to a Bach Choral verspers and it was magnificant.

We had an excellent start to the new translation of the Mass. My part went real well. The priest was very deliberate with the new words and explained some of the changes. He did cue for people to pick up the pew cards three or four times. I did not need one. I made extra large print copies of the changes and put it in my music notebook so I could read it without having to find a pew card. I will probably need the Creed for quite a while.

The new translation went smoothly with my parish as well. The assembly was used to the Mass parts, which we have been singing since mid-September. The only thing different we did was do the chant of the Sanctus, which was given by the ICEL. I actually really like that chant setting.

We had a wondeful “Churches together” Advent Carol service in our neighbouring Anglican Church yesterday evening.

The service included a number of readings from Issiah and a Gospel reading from Matthew. The musical items were:
  • Martin Rosponsory (Palestrina) (choir)
  • Creator of the stars at night
  • Let all Mortal Flesh keep silence (Bairstow) (choir)
  • Then a sequence based on the antiphins as the candles were lit)
  • This is the record of John (Gibbons (Choir)
  • On Jordon’s Bank
  • Come Thou redeemer of the Earth (mendelssohn) (Choir)
    -Hills of the North rejoice
  • Gaudete omnes (Praetorius) (Choir)
  • And the Glory of the Lord (Handel) (Choir)

What a shame that you will be choir-less. I can’t imagine anything worse for Christmas. But why can’t you go ahead with the Carol service - I know it’s best practice for the choir to sing a few anthems, but all the songs you have selected are perfectly suitable for congregational singing.
