I agree that the Schubert setting is lovely in harmony. I think the Murray setting is one of the easiest to sing congregationally - I think it has been revised for the new translation. Another one that I forgot to mention is James MacMillan’s St Anne’s Mass - the Gloria and the Agnus Dei sung antiphonaly are lovely but the Sanctus is spectacular.

I just looked up the St. Anne’s Mass and only got to see the sheet music for the Kyrie, but that looked nice. I think I’m going to purchase it and show it to both of my music directors where I work as a cantor. I thought I could only get it through Boosey & Hawkes, but it looks like I can purchase it on Sheet Music Plus.

Is this the Murray mass you were talking about? This is also very nice. I’ll have to buy this one as well.

I’ve freelanced cantored at a lot of parishes along with my weekly Sunday church jobs here in the States and I’ve never heard either one of those masses done here. Are they British composers? I’m glad you suggested them as I’m constantly looking for good congregational mass settings.

Hi Sarabande. That is indeed the Murray Mass. He originally wrote a Latin congregational setting of it in 1950 and then an English version in the 1960s and revised again (hence the “New” ) in line with the ICEL texts in 1975. He was an English monk who also write many beautiful settings of the Psalms (though ironically these are now most popular in the presbyterian and reformed churches in the UK!!) See attached link:

James MacMillan is a Scottish composer and has written many choral, congregational and secular works. I am sure you will love the mass of St Anne’s. I was trying to find a sample to send you but failed. The Gloria and Sanctus are particulary beautiful.

Actually, let me correct that statement. I’d only do that after chanting vespers with said group of friends. Then we could get into the fun stuff. 🙂
 
Well, we actually got spared the revision of Mass of Creation. We learned the revised Gloria of Heritage Mass this weekend. I was really happy. So far a lot of people don’t like it, however. In years past we only have done the Sanctus, Memorial Acclamation, Great Amen, and Lamb of God with this setting, and the Gloria’s music is similar to that of the Sanctus, so everyone is trying to get used to the fact that they both sound similar.

I just offer suggestions, but the list below my suggestions I post is the list of hymns we do at my parish. I don’t plan those. We did “You Are Near” a while ago after the mandate, and it was really awkward because even the cantor will say the Y word. It might be a song that some might need to take out of the repertoire for that reason.

Having perused the music lists here for some time now it strikes me that the hymn choices in the US contrast significantly with the ones in the UK. Is it usual to only have modern hymns and songs in the US, or do some parishes use traditional hymns and others more modern? I hope it’s okay to post this here? Thanks

It’s more than welcome! Unfortunately, many American parishes use more contemporary music and hardly ever use traditional hymns, never mind propers, motets, and other chants. Why that is, I don’t know.

Thank you Mendes. It’s interesting because It seems to me that the sung TLM is far more common in the States than it is in the UK (or Europe) where any Latin masses tend to just be the OF with the sung propers. There must then be a huge gulf between this very traditional rite music with the more modern songs at most OF masses.

It might be because we have incorporated a lot of the traditional hymnody from the Church of England, many of which were popular at devotions long before hymns were allowed at (low) mass from the late 1940s onwards, but there are also some wonderful old Catholic hymns which are great for liturgical feast days. It will be interesting to compare over the coming weeks. Blessings.
