In the evening we are having a “Churches Together” and have been invited to the candlelit Epiphany Carol Service at our local Anglican Church. I love it too. I think William Chatterton Dix hs written so many beautiful hymns including the upcoming Epiphany hymn As with Gladness Men of Old. Apparently he was one of the first non-Catholic hymnwriters (he was Anglican) to have his hymns admitted to the Catholic church.

I hope you’re over your cold. I know what you mean… it’s death (or close to it) to a singer. I feel like my heart will burst whenever I can’t sing.

We did “What Child is This?” today for the Epiphany. Very happy about that.

I just wanted to report back on the very beautiful Epiphany Carol service I attended at a local Anglican Church (through the Churches Together programme). It was truly beautiful made more so by the fact that the church was candlelit.

It’s kind of funny. When we planned the songs at our meeting, and we picked out “When Jesus Comes to Be Baptized”, our music director was saying how much he hates the WINCHESTER NEW hymn tune. So we had to think of a different tune to set it to, and OLD HUNDREDTH worked pretty well.

Hi.
New to the group here. I am organist for a small church in Kent County, RI, with a sizeable Italian population. Here our pastor selects the hymns for Sunday Mass (entrance, offertory, meditation after Communion, and recessional). I pick (on the most part) the sung Mass Ordinary, the Psalm and Alleluia settings, and the anthem during Communion to be sung by our paid duet (soprano/alto), which is sometimes augmented by my voice (bass), and on higher occasions augmented by the alto’s husband as well (a tenor on four-part material, bass on three-part material).
Our organ is a Rodgers Trillium 807, installed in 2001.

Here is the music we did for the Epiphany (btw, we also had a brass trio - they join us about 8-10 times a year - trumpet, flugelhorn, and French horn):

Mass setting:
(7:30 AM): Gloria VIII, Sanctus/Agnus XVIII, Memorial: Mortem tuam (Jubilate Deo), Amen (Dresden)
(all other Masses): Gloria/Sanctus/Agnus (Mass of the Shepherds, Pietro Yon), Memorial/Amen (same as 7:30)

Psalm 72: setting by yours truly
Alleluia: my own adaptation of the chant “Divinum Mysterium”

Hymns, etc:
Entrance: O come, all ye faithful (arr. Willcocks)

Communion: Laudamus Te (from Vivaldi’s “Gloria in D”)

I loved Vivaldi’s “Gloria” and the “Laudamus Te” is beautiful. The parish is very fortunate to have musicians of that calibre able to do the music.

On this thread (at least) we are careful not to argue or disparage what each other do, specifically because we are so darn diverse. My parish is blue collar, largely immigrant and musically poor. We have not one keyboard player of any kind, except me, and I can’t read piano music. I just fake a few hymns that I grew up with.

I’m not quite the music leader, I leave that up to the choir mistress, but I’m very much her right hand lady! And I’m normally the cantor on a Sunday too.

This Sunday past we sang

Recessional; See Amid the Winter Snow

Our parts of the mass were The Dalreoch Settings, written by a good friend of ours Dr Noel Donnelly. I also sang the psalm, the choir mistress set the response a few mins before the mass started and we used our psalm tones that have been in use since before I was born I think!

My parish is on the west coast of Scotland with a relatively large parish (around 3000).

I’m enjoying this thread, it’s really interesting to see all the hymns you use, it has lead me off to google/YouTube!
