The words may change but the melody remains the same???

“We abstain from flesh meat and from all things that come from flesh, as milk, cheese, and eggs.”
Draughts courtesy of your friends @ The Council of Aix la Chapelle!

Have a productive Lenten season…🙂

Here is my list for tonight (Ash Wed.)

Attende Domine
Lord Let Me Walk
Near the Cross
Jesus Walked That Lonesome Valley
Hosea
Were you There
O Lord Throughout These Forty Days (These 40 days of Lent re-write)

Oh, we also switch to a chant Mass setting, the English version of Jubilate Dei.

My parish has now learned four settings in two years. Not bad for an old congregation where the average age is about 55. I told a few of them before the translation went into effect that we would learn and know four settings within three years whether they like it or not. We did it in two 🙂 The other directors in our cluster aren’t that gutsy, ha. I know one parish that spent an entire year on the revised MoC and then learned Storrington Mass (also taken them a year) after we used it for the Triduum last year (we clustered together at my parish).

The four settings are:

Mass of Creation - Haugen
Storrington Mass - Haugen
Mass of Redemption - Janco
Heritage Mass - Alstott

I am actually leaving my current parish after this weekend, but the new director is going to stick with Heritage through Lent.
Four settings in two years and no complaints? That is an accomplishment. The only thing I take exception to, at the age of 65, is calling your congregation “old” at 55! LOL!
Before the 3rd edition, we used MOC, MOL, a mix of others. We now sing Schutte’s Mass of Christ the Savior and have been from day one. People do not complain, but do whenever we change.

Sunday, March 16, 2014 - Second Sunday of Lent - Year A

Processional Hymn: #779 - “Psalm 51: Create in Me” Kendzia
Preparation of the Gifts: #119 - “'Tis Good, Lord, to Be Here” SWABIA
Communion Hymn: #505 - “Transfigure Us, O Lord” Hurd
Recessional Hymn: #644 - “God of Mystery, God of Mercy” Walker/MOUNT OF ST. MARY’S

In regard to Mass settings, we have a mixed repertoire for Lent. The penitential rite is read by Father. We are using the version of Psalm 51 from Respond & Acclaim every Sunday of Lent, and we are using the Gospel Acclamation setting for each Sunday from R&A as well. We are using the Sanctus and Agnus Dei from the Roman Missal, and the Save Us, Savior from Heritage Mass and the Great Amen from a setting from the old People’s Mass Book.

MoC, MoL, Sing Praise and Thanksgiving, and what had become known as the Composite Setting (Holy Holy from People’s Mass, Memorial Acc and Amen from Danish Mass and Lamb of God from Chant XVIII). - That was before the revision

The “new parish” (I’ve been here almost a year now):

They were using Mass of Christ the Savior (for some reason, this seems to be widely accepted. I strongly dislike it), and the Chant setting (XVIII).

Last fall I introduced Mass of Renewal, and initially there were MANY complaints. Since then, things have quieted down. Switched over to the Chant for Lent. Next fall, I will change to another setting again (one on the list from my previous parish), haven’t decided wish one yet. If I use MoC, I will skip the Gloria as I had before. I absolutely hate it. It is melodically stupid. But that happens when you try to cram more text into something already composed…

Next weekend:

Sunday, March 23, 2014 - Third Sunday of Lent - Year A

Processional Hymn: “Psalm 51: Create in Me” Kendzia
Preparation of the Gifts: #466 - “I Heard the Voice of Jesus” KINGSFOLD
Communion Hymn: #512 - “Now We Remain” Haas
Recessional Hymn: #694 - “Healing River of the Spirit” BEACH SPRING

This weekend: (2nd S in Lent)

Draw Near O Lord
Only This I Want
At That First Eucharist
Were You There
Hosea

Does anyone have any ideas for the Holy Triduum? Our choir director passed away this past year, and the music director asked me to help him plan the Holy Triduum since he and the choir director always did it. I’m trying to think of different hymns we could use. Here’s some songs that I came up with:

Holy Thursday -

As I Have Done for You
Where Charity and Love Prevail
At That First Eucharist
O Sacrament, Most Holy
Glory in the Cross
Godhead Here in Hiding (Adore Te Devote)

Good Friday -

At the Cross Her Station Keeping
Go to Dark Gethsemane
Sing, My Tongue, the Savior’s Glory (there are Good Friday verses in the hymnal; anyone ever use them before?)
When I Survey the Wondrous Cross
O Crucified Messiah
Behold the Lamb
Were You There

Easter Vigil -

Psalms from Respond & Acclaim
Gloria from Jubilation Mass
Festival Alleluia from James Chepponis
Out of Darkness (Kendzia)
Jesus Christ Is Risen Today
Christ is Risen from the Dead (Rossini, old Parochial Hymnbook)
Jesus Is Risen
Ye Watchers and Ye Holy Ones
Ye Sons and Daughters
The Strife is O’er

Really, this list is endless

Does anyone have any ideas for the Holy Triduum?
I have to limit my choices on Thursday as we go tri-lingual.

Usually

Lord When you Came to the Seashore/ Pescador…

(washing of feet)
Jesu, Jesu
Un Maniemento

Pan de Vida
I am the Bread of Life/ Yo so…
Ubi caritas

We finish with Canta Lingua and Tantum Egro

Mass parts are all done in Latin (Kyrie in Greek)

Good Friday

Were You There
Near the Cross

We also chant over and over Jesus Remember Me in English, Spanish and both during the adoration of the Cross.
