The Muslims are in an uproar because Newsweek reported a fictional incident about US interrogators flushing a Koran down the toilet.

Why is there nothing about the Holy Bibles being shredded in Saudi Arabia?
CNS News

Hey Newsweek, this is a real story not some made up piece of propaganda.

Wake Up President Bush. The Saudis are not our friends. They are Muslim terrorists.

I may be wrong, but I was taught that the physical bible is not what is sacred but the actual spoken word. Let them shred paper we still have the word of God.

The shredding of Bibles is bad enough. But the article also mentions that they were torturing a nun at the airport, and killing people that were smuggling Bibles into the country.

That is correct. Jesus is the Word. Not some book. While respect a bible, and treat it accordingly, it is just a big hunk of paper.

Muslims feel for the Koran, like the Catholic Church feels for the Eucharist. Remember the fury Catholics were driven into when Hosts were being sold on Ebay?..

When I went to Saudi Arabia to work, my employer (US gov’t) warned me not to bring any Christian religious item into the country. So, I didn’t. I was surprised to find out that there is a big Catholic community over here. Off course, we all have to worship silently. From talking to my Muslim Middle Eastern friends, Islam in Saudi Arabia is not a religion, but a cultural thing. There are mosques everywhere. Not everyone prays during pray time. Generally, people like the west. There are some who want nothing to do with the west. Unfortunately, those are the one in power and are preventing people from seeking greater freedom and economic well-being.

Well Catholics were justified into fury with Ebay. While Islam still believes the Koran consists of paper, Catholics (and Eastern Orthodox) believe the Host only consists of Jesus. Though I know that concept seems strange in Muslim, Protestant and other non-Catholic/Orthodox Christian eyes.

I love the sory’s that come out of Saudi, they are always somebody know somebody who saw something etc. etc. As far as shredding bibles, yes they do, they also shred pornography and pornographic books so it’s not all bad.

With reference to the Nun’s story I don’t believe a word of it, not least from the fact that transit through Jeddah is almost unheard of, and the thought of transit through Jeddah during the Haj to anyone who knows Saudi is ridiculous. And as a rider, the transit lounge in Jeddah is totally seperate from any of the official entry points therefore no-one in transit would have any contact with customs. Pilgrims to Mecca during the Haj have their own pilgrims terminal at Jeddah, they certainly don’t use the normal airport terminal and require a seperate “Pilgrims” visa for entry.

I have no problem condemning a country or system based on fact, I tend to get up tight when it’s based on somebody’s fiction, hearsay or conjecture.

you have missed my point…they don’t see the koran as a “book or piece of paper” they see the koran like we see the Eucharist…not as Jesus, but as part of the Living God, or Allah.

Did any Catholics actually riot and kill people because of the eBay thing? This may sound terrible and I expect to be flamed for this, but the typical “fundamentalist” Muslim would correctly be locked in a mental institution in any civilized society based on the rule of law.

Well, duh.

Mohammed would have correctly been locked in a mental institution is any civilized society based on the rule of law.

Now now, you don’t want to be guilty of starting a worldwide holywar, do you?

If it’s propaganda, then why has this been reported for at least 2 years? What about this time made Muslims want to riot?

And many, many more articles if you google “guantanamo; koran”

We had this discussion on another thread. A former Muslim tried to explain it, and it did come across that Muslims seem to view the Koran as sacred.

Of course, while we often see Catholics sacrificing their own lives for the sake of the faith, I don’t recall seeing Catholics rioting and randomly killing when the Eucharist gets desecrated.

Exactly, we turn the other cheek and protest peacefully.

God Bless you and much love and peace to you

From Instapundit:

TOM FRIEDMAN continues the theme I mentioned yesterday:

The greatest respect we can show to Arabs and Muslims - and the best way to help Muslim progressives win the war of ideas - is to take them seriously and stop gazing at our own navels. That means demanding that they answer for their lies, hypocrisy and profane behavior, just as much as we must answer for ours.

It’s interesting to see this idea taking off. Thanks, Newsweek!

UPDATE: And it just keeps spreading:

As a Muslim, I am able to purchase copies of the Quran in any bookstore in any American city, and study its contents in countless American universities. American museums spend millions to exhibit and celebrate Muslim arts and heritage. On the other hand, my Christian and other non-Muslim brothers and sisters in Saudi Arabia–where I come from–are not even allowed to own a copy of their holy books. Indeed, the Saudi government desecrates and burns Bibles that its security forces confiscate at immigration points into the kingdom or during raids on Christian expatriates worshiping privately. . . .

The Saudi Embassy and other Saudi organizations in Washington have distributed hundreds of thousands of Qurans and many more Muslim books, some that have libeled Christians, Jews and others as pigs and monkeys. In Saudi school curricula, Jews and Christians are considered deviants and eternal enemies. By contrast, Muslim communities in the West are the first to admit that Western countries–especially the U.S.–provide Muslims the strongest freedoms and protections that allow Islam to thrive in the West. Meanwhile Christianity and Judaism, both indigenous to the Middle East, are maligned through systematic hostility by Middle Eastern governments and their religious apparatuses.

The lesson here is simple: If Muslims wish other religions to respect their beliefs and their Holy book, they should lead by example.

Indeed.

Well isn’t what they’re doing basically what they believe? I don’t approve but we can’t call them evil because they practise what they preach. It could be argued that America is evil seeing all the immorality and death (and war) that flows from a predominantly christian country. Yet if we called America evil we would be grossly wrong (look at Catholic Answers). I think we should just pray for our muslim brothers, my first best friend was a muslim. Peace.

Depends if you think Jesus was God and founded Christianity for all mankind or not, I suppose.

Ofcourse he did. However they don’t believe that do they? They see us as a perversion of truth, you can’t really expect or blame them for doing it. So lets pray.
