I can see how difficult this sort of situation could be, but all is possible with God! Keep praying and seeking discernment. There are many beautiful posts on this thread with much love in them. Never mind posts that are unkind. The love of God will show you the way. Pray! Pray! Pray! and I will, too!

If he really wants to be a priest he would be your ex-boyfriend, just like if he wanted to marry another girl he would be your ex-boyfriend. The most loving thing you can do for him and yourself is to break it off now, stop seeing him, pray for him, and look toward your own vocation in life.

Rather, someone really struggling with this would not want to broadcast it, would instead be discussing this with a spiritual director, quietly breaking the news to his girlfriend, and not holding his relationship up to public redicule.
I agree with you totally…one really struggling with this would not want to broadcast it. I suppose the difference in opinion comes from the fact that I do not utilize the internet as much as you do. Your 1000+ posts is impressive. I do not see mentioning my problems on a forum where nobody knows my real identity to be “broadcasting” anything. As for a spiritual director, I am meeting with him on Thurs. 😃 Something came up this past weekend and he couldn’t meet me. And about public ridicule: If you want, you can ridicule me. You can even crucify me if you want. That’s okay. And I didn’t ask my gf to show up, she is just looking for prayers and support. I understand that I will have to break up with her if the Lord calls me to. That I am willing to do. We love each other and have agreed to dedicate our lives to God no matter what.
You’re obviously a religious man, Jackpuffin
Thanks! 🙂
…don’t have the maturity…
I doubt if anyone has the maturity that such a magnificent vocation truly requires. I only hope that I can grow…

In closing, I would like to thank you all for your prayers and support. For now, however, I think it would be best to spend the time I would be spending on this forum in prayer. Thanks again, and have a merry christmas!

Thank you, Annie. as usual, the voice of reason . . .
How in the world did “Buddha” become a saint??? He died 600 years before Christ and was not a Jew.

Tell that to Saint Josaphat.

You didn’t go to the hyperlink, did ya?

If you still don’t get it, ask Saint Murgen the Mermaid to give you guidance.

I love being Catholic. 😃

This really doesn’t sound too fishy to me at all. One of my husband’s professors was engaged to be married, and shortly before the wedding he answered his true calling. There are several in this area that had serious girlfriends/fiancees when they entered the seminary. Considering the number of late vocations these days, I think it’s fair to assume that a good number of these men had serious relationships in the past. What’s wrong with that?

I completely agree with you. Why is it that people assume that priests have had no interest in women at all before they entered the seminary? Why is it some people think that priests are these holier-than-thou stoics who have had only the purest of thoughts since birth?

Deciding on a vocation is a serious matter, whether it be religious or otherwise. Anyone trying to decide their future needs all the love and support they can get.

To the “Puffins”-you two are in my prayers.

“Catholic” does mean universal, now doesn’t it?

👍

Thanks Scout!! We really appreciate it!! I know in my heart that right now I need to just be there for him and with God’s help I will be able to let him go and let him do what God truly wants of him, whether he is a priest or not! Thanks again for everyone’s support and prayers!!! I hope that all of you have a wonderful Christmas!!! GOD BLESS!!!

Maybe the boyfriend is just dumping you, yet doesn’t have the guts just to say it and came up with this “priesthood” story.

A friend of mine told his ex-girlfriend he was gay to get the same effect.

Get this post back to the original question and remember your charity.

Jackpuffin and Tillypuffin,
God Bless you both for being open to Gods call in your lives! While it’s beautiful that you guys are willing to submit to whatever His will is, I seriously reccomend taking a step back and seeking spiritual direction first.
Heres a thought…
Seek direction from both a good, trusted priest and a married couple that you know to be living a solid spiritual life. Being two people that are devoted to God as you seem you are, I’m sure you already have someone in mind for both.
The discernment process here is three ways: 1. Is Jack called to be a priest? 2. Are the two of you called to be married? 3. Are you called to be together in a dating relationship right now?
Find direction before committing your mind to any one path, and don’t make any sudden decisions. While deciding to enter the seminary is a decision that doesn’t rest with you alone, it can be easy to commit yourself prematurely.
I hope this advice helps a little, as I have been wondering about my vocation over the past couple of years as well.
God Bless,

Justin

Good point. If nothing else, he needs a push to stop doodling around and either fish or cut bait. It is not as if these two can ever marry while he has these reservations, so he is, in effect, stringing her along. If he doesn’t have the courage to do that, she needs to give the courage to him… with no promises that she’ll be waiting when and if he comes back.

The kindling is set on the altar. Time to take that knife out, Abraham.

The mod is right! That is mean and uncalled for.It is sad that some people get an enjoyment out of hurting others feelings.God Bless and I hope you don’t find yourself in a situation like this and get ridiculed:tsktsk:

Dear Puffins,

Keep praying about this, separately and together, but above all, be really honest with yourselves and with each other. Are you just clinging to one another out of fear of the consequences of a clear choice? Or in the hope that somehow things will resolve themselves even while you attempt to simultaneously maintain a committed relationship as well as the prospect of a life apart? You can’t have either of those options while hanging onto the other, even mentally.

Tillypuffin: I experienced something very similar with my last boyfriend (before I got married to someone else!). We dated two years, and every now and then he would flash the “discerning a vocation” card at me. I trusted his intentions, but each time we had the “should he be a priest” discussion, it damaged our increasingly fragile relationship. The degree of commitment we had forged was sabotaged with each new discussion, because I loved him and yet felt that I couldn’t stand between him and God.

Although I’m equally to blame for letting him “discern on my time,” it took two years for me to realize that he had no business putting me in a position where I felt guilty for holding him from a vocation, no business keeping me on edge about the future of our relationship, and no business discussing marriage vs the priesthood with me as if I could objectively help him choose between them. You can’t help him choose, Tilly - it’s something he’s got to figure out before involving you any more. Or perhaps you can help him choose: by amicably breaking up until he can see things clearer.

Obviously, my hind-sight is 20/20, but it helps that I’m happily married to a wonderful man whose intentions to marry me as soon as possible (!) were made crystal clear from the moment we met. The aformentioned two years with a “discerning” boyfriend was a good learning experience, yet a huge waste of my time and trust.
I do believe that “should we get married” discussions should go on for about a week–although marriage is a huge, serious commitment, it’s not something to be mulled over for years. Either both want it, and pursue it, or not.

This probably sounds pretty harsh and matter-a-fact. Needless to say, my experience above caused great heartache at the time, and I do know that this is a difficult time for you. In my experience, however, true love is so very simple. Don’t let what may be a mutual lack of honesty muddy the waters and complicate things.

My warmest wishes to you both.

I recently took a bunch of college girls to see the St. Therese movie. They are from a local Catholic College. One of the girls helps me three hours weekly with miscellaneous things. These were her friends. One girl in particular stood out. Quiet, reserved but when she smiled, she shined. After the movie I took them to eat and I was drawn to her. She is studying to be a nun. She had a boyfriend for two years and broke up with him last spring. She is at peace with her decision, and it didn’t come easy. Lots of prayer and fasting. I pray for her daily.

Please be sympathetic to what they are going through. You have to suffer to be beautiful!

Blessings,
Helen

I have always been told that in loving another person we learn more about how we are to live our lives. By emulating the love of God, we come closer to the heart of Christ, where our vocations are written. Sometimes it takes loving another to truely know what we are called to do. Support one another and things will turn out as they should.

Hello everyone! I would like to say that I have a bit of a problem. I have been dating this wonderful guy for almost two years now. We have talked about getting married since as far back as I can remember and we have an amazing relationship. He has really inspired me to become closer to God and has really helped me to become a better person. Anyways, he now believes that he has a strong calling to be a priest. This is very difficult for me to handle because I love him so much. I know that the best way for me to love him is to give him to God and to encourage him to follow God’s plan for him. Everytime I think Im okay with all this I just breakdown when I think about how hard it will be to not have him in my life in the same way. I am really proud of him though and his devotion to God. I know in my heart that he would really make a wonderful priest and that is what the world really needs right now. Please I need help! If for some reason you happen to read this please please please please keep me in your prayers and keep my boyfriend (jackpuffin) also in your prayers. God Bless and have a wonderful day!!!
