How odd. I thought that touch being used as a dominance behavior was kinda common knowledge. I studied it in school, but even as it was being taught, I thought it was kind of a common sense thing.

Ag_Not isn’t the only one reading these boards… your were speaking to everyone in a way that pretty much fits in with the extremely nasty, judgemental tone we see in right wing politics. You do NOT know what was going on there, because you weren’t there. It’s as simple as that.

Even when we are face to face with people we can seldom accurately attribute motives and it almost always turns out to be the wrong thing to do when we try.

She didn’t have to take him at face value… but neither did she have to assume he was attacking. So I don’t get the worry about that…

He may have been and probably was simply a “Bible Christian” doing what HE thought was right in correcting what HE thought were fallacies and false teachings… but he appeared from her recounting to do it with no small amount of kindness compared to what you suggested.

Someone who despite perhaps wrongful moral certitudes could have been taught, or at least given reason to pause, if approached in a less than hostile way.

Unless of course your intention is to turn people away from Christ and/or Catholicism?

The guy was nice, friendly, has a lovely smile, and was well mannered and behaved.

So was I.

He did get annoyed with me. But then I can be very annoying 😛

He’s a touchy feely type of guy, as I found out.

Personally - I dont like people touching without consent. I dont like guys assuming they can infringe my personal space that way. I just ignored the touching - whatever his motive behind it - hitting on me, subtle signs of dominating me - whatever - he got NO feedback from me. No feeback - it fizzles out. 👍

It happens.

I ignored it on that occasion. I kept us focused on what we were talking about.

I work 2 days a week with him. We’re still friends - well, good coworkers more precicely. I worked with him yesterday. Yesterday we talked about foreign places, bikes, music, that kinda stuff. 😛

I dont think he wants to talk to me about religion any more 😃

I cannot thank you all enough for your advice, your kindness, and your words of wisdom.

I’m on T minus and counting 'till Easter. Father thinks Im progressing nicely on my faith journey and understandiing.

That’s what matters right now. 😃

It sounds like he respected you and your views. Since he was friendly and well mannered, he seems like a nice person.

Because you presented things in a friendly way, I am sure you planted some seeds. Some seeds sprout quickly and others take time. Keep up the work of Christ.

Why don’t you turn the table around and start evangelizing him? You seems to have a natural way of disarming men.

In an earlier post I suggested that she invite the young man to mass. This was so he can see for himself what happens during mass. She never reported if she offered him an invitation or not. Maybe she will after the young man’s ego heals a bit.

With his understanding of the Catholic Church, I don’t think he will dare to step in our Church. I think Ag_not needs to plant one catholic doctrinal seed at a time, nurture it with love and patience and watch it grow.😃
 
Hi Ag_not,

I really feel for you. It’s really hard to be politely attacked for your faith and its something that I have had to deal with a lot in the past.

This isn’t a solution but hopefully some comfort to you. I believe if you can be argued into a religion you can be argued out of it. Your faith stems deeper than that. I think all you need to stay in this situation, or feel, is that you believe in Jesus Christ and the church that He founded and that He is calling you to be a Catholic. Perhaps it might be worth asking him why he feels the need to attack your faith.

As previous posters have suggested, it’s good to be loaded with information too. To particular arguments, Mary, for example. Ask him if he’s every asked someone to pray with him, or for him. We choose to take our prayers to Jesus’ mother to intercede for us and she does not ask us to praise her, but her Son.

Personally, I like to steer clear of those arguments, they unravel me also and i can’t compete with their knowledge of scripture, in the end I go with what is in my heart and what is planted their by Jesus.

Welcome to the Catholic Church!
On the subject of statues, I think you have to remember that sculpture is one form of ART.
Art, music, stained glass windows, beautiful architecture are all part of the Church’s way of worshipping God by giving back to Him, by using our talents that help transcend the ordinary.
My sister attended an organ recital at her parish this summer. The pipe organ was magnificent, and touched her on a level that can only be described as “emotional”. However, her thought was, “How can anyone hear this and NOT believe in God?”
There are many times and places that my faith has been uplifted, a profound overwhelming peace comes over me, and I feel so close to God that I know he loves us, and I love him.
He gave us a beautiful Earth, “Nature”, our wonderful, incredibe human bodies, many delightful birds and animals, our intellect, our communication abilities, and so much more.
We were taught in my Catholic high school art class to offer up whatever we were working on to God, who gave us the talents and abilites to praise him through art, music, and the written and spoken word.

Hey buddy, and I mean this, don’t let it get to you! Just because you didn’t know them or couldn’t say them doesn’t mean that the answers aren’t there. There are answers that will make you more confident and are more sensible than anything that he could say to you! Just keep on going and trying to find truth.
