My girlfriend reads 50 Shades of Grey

We go to mass every week and seem to be doing well with chastity.
Last week she said she was reading one of those 50 Shades of Grey books and I had heard these are very sexually explicit…
I don’t know if I should confront the issue or leave it alone as it is just fiction.
 
It is pretty sexually explicit. I would caution her agianst it as she would get aroused, like I would caution a male from reading a risque manga. Sure both are just fiction, but both can tantalize your lower passions and possibly lead you to sin.

For example, a popular computer game I used to play (Crusader Kings 2) had the ability for my character to seduce and fornicate with any of my subject’s wives, my leige’s wife, or my neighboring kingdom’s wives. You never see the act, but you can use your imagination. I used to have a good time picturing myself, a lowly Duke, fornicating with the Kaiserin which has lead me to sins of the flesh more than I would like to admit.

Same can go for this book.

As an adult, she has the right to read whatever she wishes. I avoided the books because of explicit content.

Your girlfriend should follow her conscience in this matter. However, don’t allow her to discuss the content with you because it is an occasion of sin.

If you are serious about this lady, you may need to start a dialogue about your values. Listen to her. Then say your piece. But don’t scold her.

There were some excerpts posted on Amazon–reviewers were trashing and thrashing the book mercilessly because of the imbecilic quality of the writing.
I read through some of the excerpts.

Regardless of how you feel about the morality and your girlfriend’s decisions, I would seriously question her judgement to read such awful writing.

Also, I came across the movie as I was channel surfing. It was mind numbing, dull, slow, and dim-witted. And just plain creepy in how it took itself seriously.

Yeah if I want to read crappy fanfiction I can read it for free on the internet.
 
Yep. It did. Sans fantastical elements… it’s like writing a Star Wars fan fic that takes place on earth…

Eh, just let it go. Sometimes we all need escapism. I’m not saying it’s a good book, but there are bigger issues out there.
 
And that is all you really need to know about it to decide whether or not it is worth reading.
 
I’m not a fan. But here is the thing. I think CAF has the same content most days.

I was making a joke, because of all the sex themed threads (and often ridiculously graphic posts).
 
I think a lot of the masturbation threads and how far is too far threads are meant to be arousing. If only to the author. And I think CAF needs to address the age limit for sexual threads. It is so odd to me that a Catholic site in this day and age especially would allow adults to communicate with underage kids about sexual topics. I reported one the other day where an admitted teen was PMd by an adult poster about a masturbation topic. Good Grief!!!

My kids use the computer for school and I have to make sure CAF is not up on the windows. It is so sad that one has to hide the forums like an inappropriate website. Is that what CAF intended with the forums?

It isn’t even just the sexual posts but the “should I obey my parents” posts too. Why is CAF not 18 and over as a policy!?
 
So minors can talk to random adults on controversial topics? No way. We have no business talking to children about those things.
 
I am not singling you out. I am just saying that in general, adults need to be very careful on the internet when dealing with minors.
