It’s a book. I am not saying it is a must-read, award winning novel. It is a book.
There are millions of books out there. Some are great, others are not so great.

Wasn’t there a guy that murdered his girlfriend and made it look like she committed suicide? Then he watched the passion of the Christ and confessed what he did.

Movies/books/shows/music can influence/inspire us for either good or evil.

I’m not a fan of 50 shades of grey. Isn’t it erotica? No thanks.

I as a woman like love stories like Pride and prejudice and Disney’s animated beauty and the beast. 🤷
 
It’s fiction. It’s fantasy. It’s rubbish. Unless she asks you to act it out, I’d let it slide. She’s a grown-up, she goes to Mass… I’ve watched violent films and I haven’t acted them out. They’re make-believe,
 
Hentai magazines are fiction and fantasy, literal pornography. It is spiritual garbage and should be avoided just like 50 shades. You remember the old addage “you are what you eat”? Well you are what you consume. If you make a habit of consuming trash (pornography, bad music, blasphemous art, etc) eventually your spiritual health will be trash. If you consume good things (like scripture, good literature, good music, actual art, etc) eventually your spiritual health will be healthy.

Comparing violent movies to pornography is inncorect. Violence and the “thrill of the kill” is a completely different capital vice from the lust that one feels when consuming pornographic material. Remember, sins of the flesh are the easiest sin to fall into and leads us away from God the most. Hence why Baalam enticed Israel with sex and food in order to get them to stray away from God in the book of Numbers.
 
That’s a strawman argument. Some people regard the works of James Joyce as pornography, even though that is debatable.

Obviously, if something is objectively (and not merely subjectively) pornography, and is read with the specific intent to arouse and titillate (i.e for the exact same reasons as the Church has condemned pornography as violating the 6th and 8th commandments) then in such a case Catholics cannot read it in good conscience.
 
It is not a strawman. Your point is that it is just a book, your examples are that other books that you dont consider pornography have been called pornographic. My question to you is do you think books can be pornographic. It is simple to answer.
 
If I had a girlfriend reading 50 Shades of Grey I would dump her. It’s porn for women.
 
The writing style and possibility of it being “porn” aside, it may be worth a casual talk. In the series the male character that so many women were fans of exhibits problematic behaviors (“intimate activities” aside).

Without too many spoilers he dictates aspects of her life some times, he tracks her via electronic devices he gifted her and shows up unexpectedly, sold her car without prior discussion, and a handful of moments of questionable consent. There’s other stuff too, but to me the male seemed abusive and the female naive.
