So I have always wanted to name my first son Jude Thaddeus (st.Jude, you know) and my husbands aunt (his moms half sister who is much younger, only a few years older than us) was asking me what we were going to name our baby if we had a boy when I was still pregnant. Naturally I told her,she told me how cute it was. We had a girl so Jude wasn’t used but I still wanted to use it in the future. Well now she’s pregnant and wants to name her son Jude Caden George  idk why I am so annoyedt for all I know I might not ever have a boy but if we do I very well can’t name him the same name as his cousin. But literally there are so many boys names. When I voiced my opinion about her copying it she basically told me she came up with the idea and even insinuated that she thought of it first. I am normally nice and understanding but I am just done with everyone acting like my opinions or ideas don’t exist oR matter!! And yes this kind of thing happens quite a bit !

I admit that I would probably be annoyed too, but it isn’t really fair to ask someone not to name their child something they want to just because you might use the name in the future, even if she did get the idea from you. It is possible that she liked the name before you even mentioned it, too.

If you have a son and want to name him Jude, you can still name him Jude. My husband has a cousin with the same name, and everyone is okay.

Name your future child whatever you want and don’t worry about it.

I would let it go. I just dont see what the big deal is. I come from a VERY large family. I have 2 cousin Jennifers, 2 cousin Christopher’s, a cousin Mary and an aunt Mary, a cousin Andrew and a cousin-in-law Andrew, A cousin Corey and a nephew Corey. And everyone gets along just fine. You dont own the name Jude, and you can still name your child the name Jude in the future if you choose. Its just one of those things where it doesn’t make a lot of sense to stew over

I’d let it go.

Just in my family, my sister, my mom, both my grandmothers, and my cousin, and a number of second cousins all had variations of the same name.

Yep. All my daughters have a variation of Mary. With just my siblings, several of us have used the same exact name (first and middle) for our kids and never though anything of it. Add in aunts, uncles and cousins and it’s even more same name and same name combos. My name in school was used by me and six classmates. It really isn’t a big deal to share a name with someone else, especially a cousin.

Really? You are mad that she might name her baby Jude, a name that you love? Only one person can have that name? You might want to examine how selfish you are being. Name your child what you want and she can do the same. I also recommend not sharing your ideas for names when pregnant.

In large Catholic families, names often repeat, especially if the families tend to favor traditional Saint names. It’s usually a positive in families. Between my cousins and their children (and now grandchildren) we could creat teams based on first names. Everyone named after Mary…team one. St. Joseph? Team two. This is where nick names come in handy. I’m not sure where my cousin’s daughter Star fits in…😛

My maternal grandparents had 34 grandkids. We had countless Mary’s and duplicates of other popular saints names. In fact in one year there were three babies named John!😉

Try to see the positive. Obviously you like a really great name. He will share it with a lot of people. Jude is currently the most common name at our parish for little boys under age 5. He was such a great Saint and many are honoring him by naming their sons after him. As a matter of fact, we had three boys named Jude Thaddeus ______ baptized in the last month. One of them was a fifth so the name is repeated multiple times in his family as well. There were also many other Jude middle name combos, but Thaddeus seems to be the most common one (for good reason). It’s a great name and the fact that many others agree should be a comfort to you not a source of disappointment.

My kids have unusual names for the US but are all family names. All my kids share a name with an aunt, uncle, cousin, or grandparent on one side of the family or the other. The names are also religiously significant. They hold deep meaning both in family, Catholicism, and our heritage. They are all names we strive to help our children live out. Sharing it with a close family member is a gift.

“Star” is English for “Stella” so it’s not too weird, essentially. Stella has a bit more history (as a given name) than Star, though…

It would be strange for a person to name a person “King” or “Queen” and yet we do name people “Rex” and “Regina.” It’s all very interesting how these things develop…

To the OP: you can always take credit for that child’s name. Hopefully, he will like it. And, there is nothing wrong with cousins having the same first name.

The family across from my Dad’s home in Italy were Antonia, Antonio for the parents. And Antonino for the son, who also had a cousin Antonino who lived down the block.

It was traditional to name children after the Grandparents, or after the Saint day the child was born on. Or the patron Saint of the village.

No she did not like the name before I told her. She liked Emmett. She is not Catholic, she’s jahovahs witness. Yes I do care and am making a big deal of it because if we ever have a boy and name him Jude she is the type if person who will turn around and tell everyone I copied her and never admit it was the other way around. I am going to continue to be irritated especially when I hear her talking about it. Oh well. Guess I’ll have to find a new name for my son even though Jude Thaddeus has been my top pick for a long time now.

What if you have 7 daughters. 😃

Star of the Sea is one of Mary’s titles, so she fits right in!
Morning Star as well. We have a few Citlalis in our family (husband’s side). Citlali is a Mexican indigenous name that means star. It’s on our list of possible names if we ever have another girl. Citlamina (shooting star) is more common in my husband’s family. Both are used to honor Mary. They also use Anam (means Earth) as a Marian name. Not sure how that works out though, but I think it’s pretty.

Yes, it’s pretty traditional to use family names and Saint day names in both my family and my husband’s family as well. Carmen is very common in my husband’s town. Their patron saint is Our Lady of Mount Carmel. Even ladies with other names often have Carmen as a nick name for some reason. In one family, every girl is Maria something and every boy is something Maria. Another family has Juan something or Juana something for each kid. It seems confusing sometimes but they find comfort in sharing a name. It makes them feel as if they belong I think

And yes this kind of thing happens quite a bit !
Indeed it is quite common for people to forget where their great ideas came from, and after a while to think, in all sincerity, that they thought of it first. Try to be charitable.

Who cares? I’m guessing most people also see what’s she’s really like…

You should say that you’re happy she’s thinking of Catholicism…naming her kid after a famous Saint and all 😃

Well look at it this way, I think St. Jude would be pleased! 🙂

btw it would bug me too, and I would have to try really hard to focus on the positive! 🙂

Why not?

Your child is not their child.

Name your Child what you choose.

They will have a different middle name too.
