Tell me, what does Catholicism teach on the subject?
Here’s the Catechism on hell…

scborromeo.org/ccc/p123a12.htm#1033

and where it talks about mortal sin and hell…

scborromeo.org/ccc/p3s1c1a8.htm#1861

And these are from Catholic Answers…
Salvation outside the Church
AAA: Will the vast majority of people end up in hell?

And there are three big exceptions for non-Christians… off the top of my head so if anybody else can complete them, thank you!!
1)Being killed in a just war to defend people.
2)Earnestly seeking God the best way you see fit when you have no exposure to Christ’s Chruch. (like never leaving your hometown in a slum in India, living in a tribe in the Amazon, etc.)
3)

1260 "Since Christ died for all, and since all men are in fact called to one and the same destiny, which is divine, we must hold that the Holy Spirit offers to all the possibility of being made partakers, in a way known to God, of the Paschal mystery."63 Every man who is ignorant of the Gospel of Christ and of his Church, but seeks the truth and does the will of God in accordance with his understanding of it, can be saved. It may be supposed that such persons would have desired Baptism explicitly if they had known its necessity.

Sorry to be so blunt, but you have a shot at it, unlike the rest of your family. There is no chance of them going to heaven unless they become catholic.

“One who does not have the church as a mother can not have God as a father” - Saint Augustine

“A branch cut from a tree can not bear fruit” - (I forget who, i think it was a Pope Pius)

I’m sorry, I’ll pray for they’re conversion. 😦

Every other Catholic, can you guys do the same? Thanks guys

There are various levels of ‘truth’ in the Catholic Church, just as the various encyclicals bear different degrees of truth.

The fullest form of truth is found in the Vatican II Council documents exceeding that of our Universal Catholic Catechism. Regarding the Conciliar and Post Conciliar Documents note Church, 14. 'This holy Council first of all turns its attention to the Catholic faithful. Basing itself on scripture and tradition, it teaches that the Church, a pilgrim now on earth, is necessary for salvation: the one Christ is mediator and the way of salvation; he is present to us in his body which is the Church. He himself explicitly asserted the necessity of faith and baptism (cf. Mk. 16:16; Jn. 3:5), and thereby affirmed at the same time the necessity of the Church which men enter through baptism as through a door. Hence they could not be saved who, knowing that the Catholic Church was founded as necessary by God through Christ, would refuse either to enter it, or to remain in it.

Fully incorporated into the Church are those who, possessing the Spirit of Christ, accept all the means of salvation given to the Church together with her entire organization of faith, the sacraments, ecclesiastical government, and communion–are joined in the visible structure of the Church of Christ, who rules her through the Supreme Pontiff and the bishops. Even though incorporated into the Church, one who does not however persevere in charity is not saved. He remains indeed in the bosom of the Church, but “in body” not “in heart”. All children of the Church should nevertheless remember that their exalted condition results, not from their own merits, but from the grace of Christ. If they fail to respond in thought, word and deed to that grace, not only shall they not be saved, but they shall be the more severely judged.’

I agree with all of this except the first part. You cannot say that “they won’t be going to Heaven”. As Catholics, we believe that there will be many non-Catholics in Heaven, including non-Christians. You can’t say that they won’t be going to Heaven just because they’re Mormon. That is not Catholic teaching.
It may not be Catholic teaching, but I remember talking to my old, wise, prophetic protestant pastor in his office. He commented to me one day, “I sometimes wonder if Protestants get into heaven.” His argument was that he didn’t think God was as easy going about the division of HIS church as we are.

It was a bit of a surprise to hear him say it. A few years after he died, I had a brief vision one night where he appeared, and he said, “We’re not in heaven. We’re all in Purgatory. Oh, we’re not in any pain or suffering, so you don’t have to worry about that. In fact, it’s pretty good around here. But we’re not in heaven.”

And I found from personal experience that he was very rarely wrong.

And Mormons are even further away from the Catholic deposit of faith than mainstream Protestants. They may well be good people, but the question is “Will you be obedient to Christ’s founding of His church on Peter? Yes, or no?”

Sorry, I do not see how whether or not God is “easy going” about the schisms off of His Church (there is no division of or in the Church, just groups that separate out for various reasons, or groups that are formed without any past relationship with the Church) is related to people that have nothing to do with such schisms (i.e. it isn’t there fault). This would be a whole different story if the Mormons in question knew that the Catholic Church was the true Church of Jesus Christ, and yet still persisted in error. Remember, what is important is what actual Catholic teaching is, not what we “think” is better to occur (not saying that you said that).

I’m not disputing they can be “saved”, but that until the churches reunify, they can’t get into heaven. I think we’re going to find that God is not prepared to tolerate the division of His Church. WHy do you think the Catholic Church has a policy of asking non-Catholics not to participate in the Eucharist?

The Church is Christ’s body.

And it is divided. Nor is God going to tolerate a doctrine which places His Son as just an also-ran, one of a number of brothers, including Satan. He won’t share His glory with another.

I didn’t know I had to be politically correct…I was told by my inlaws and missionaries that Mormons believe that there are different “levels” in heaven? These are the Celestial kingdom, the Terrestrial kingdom and the Telestial kingdom. so, does that mean we will be judged according to our works and therefore, each one of us will be judged differently??. Even if two people both live good lives, they will be judged differently and therefore receive a slightly different level of glory?? Sorry if I’m not using mormon terminoligy!! I’m not mormon…😉

Could you provide a document that says that until the churches reunify, non-Catholics can’t get into Heaven? What about Hindus, Muslims, etc.?

=Claudiava-Greetings everyone
This is my 1st time posting…well I came from a catholic background so therefore I do consider myself catholic…my husband is mormon but doesn’t not practice the religion…meaning he doesn’t go to his church…anyway…for years now his family has tried to convince me to convert to mormon…well I did consider it but was very disapointed when they were comparing their religion to others…how their church is “the true and only church”…how if anyone is not sealed in the temple they would not be allowed to enter the kingdom of heaven? I have asked myself why they think they are soo sure they are saved? Why do they think their religion is superior of all others?( of course they do some major trash talking about these other religions , don’t want to get into details) Wouldn’t only GOD know these answers?? I have only kept my mouth shut since I really don’t know what to reply to such ignorant people??What are your thoughts ?
Welcome to The Forum 😃

I’m an informed praciticing Catholic [FYI]

That is an interesting comment from a Mormon in that they do not Believe that God is real. They use the tern “god” but do not mean our Divine Trinity of God.

Also they do not accept the Bible [yes they claim to but there “NWT” which is a completely rewritten bible to support there very limited understanding, bears little resembalacne to any Christian Bible.

They also deny the reality of heaven and hell. They claim “heaven is already filled with 144,000 Jewish Male Virgins” so no one else can get in. and there idea of after life is a Utopia someplace here on earth where thay actually become “gods” to the children they beget after life on this earth.

They are a cult, NOT a religion. They completely lack FAITH which is a belief in God [our God] and therefore, cannot be saved [belief in God and Chrsitian Baptism are necessary for Salvation] John 3:5, and Luke Chapter 12: "And I tell you, every one who acknowledges me before men, the Son of man also will acknowledge before the angels of God; 9 but he who denies me before men will be denied before the angels of God. 10 And every one who speaks a word against the Son of man will be forgiven; but he who blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven. [This means those who deny God [our God] are doomed!

may I suggest friend that you start getting back to Church regullarly. God is calling you home:thumbsup:

Love and prayers,

Love and prayers,
While I agree with most of what you have said, I do believe you have the Jehovah Witness and LDS confused into one big ball.

The NWT (New World Translation) is used by the JW’s, and the LDS use the JST(Joseph Smith Translation) or the KJV.

It is also the JW’s that believe in the 144,000 in their version of Heaven. The LDS believe in 3 levels of Heaven, and outer darkness.

Both of them hold different views of the Trinity than mainstream Christianity.

Hope this helps.

Maybe it is a description of someone who is “LDS and JW”.

There are those Mormons who cannot endure defellowship. But in their hearts they worship God that is acceptable to HIm…God knows our limitations and our circumstances…Will this particular person go here or there…It is God’s call.

Let God be God.

Hi and thank you…I am in the process of studying more about the CCC…Also so far what I have read about Joseph smith was that he was the first Mormon prophet, Joseph Smith was arrested and convicted in New York and was found guilty of being a con-artist, an impostor – he was a necromancer and a charlatan.
Really, he was convicted? I think that you need to read up on him:

Conclusion
A review of all the relevant documents demonstrates that:

The court hearing of 1826 was not a trial, it was an examination
The hearing was likely initiated from religious concerns; i.e. people objected to Joseph’s religious claims.
There were seven witnesses.
The witnesses’ testimonies have not all been transmitted faithfully.
Most witnesses testified that Joseph did possess a gift of sight
It was likely that the court hearing was initiated not so much from a concern about Joseph being a money digger, as concern that Joseph was having an influence on Josiah Stowell. Josiah Stowell was one of the first believers in Joseph Smith. His nephew was probably very concerned about that and was anxious to disrupt their relationship if possible. He did not succeed. The court hearing failed in its purpose, and was only resurrected decades later to accuse Joseph Smith of different crimes to a different people and culture.

Understanding the context of the case removes any threat it may have posed to Joseph’s prophetic integrity.

I know of no other trial before 1826, I think that you still need to get your facts straight.

Are you sure? I thought you can only get into heaven without a original sin? Thanks for the (name removed by moderator)ut, anybody else have a say in it?
Correct, only those in a state of grace can go to Heaven. You should look into baptism of desire and baptism of blood. The Church does not teach that you have to be Catholic to be saved, nor does it teach that non-Catholics cannot go to Heaven until the churches are unified (that’s the first time I’ve heard of that).

Bob Crowley said that the Church is Christ’s body, and it is divided. That is unfortunately heretical. Christ’s body has never been divided. Groups schism off, but the Church has always existed in its fullness. The Catholic Church does not depend on the various Protestant churches for its status, nor does it teach that the Orthodox and Protestant schisms caused the Church to be divided up. In our view, the Catholic Church has always existed fully, not divided, and is Christ’s Church.

David Persuitte’s book does cite some sources which prove that Stoal was successful in his conviction. There was involved in that case a certain peep stone - I’m half sure that this was the same peepstone which later shows up in narratives during the translation process of the Book of Mormon.

I don’t know why some LDS apologists feel threatened with the possibility that the suit against Smith was successful. Really, what does it prove? I mean, so what?
