Over the last few weeks it has become apparent that my sister is losing ground in her battle with multiple medical issues. We almost lost her in August of 2012, and she has struggled daily since that time. Now there are signs that there is increased loss of good heart and lung function, as well as another severe Crohn’s attack.

She has suffered for decades with this illness and others. I have taken care of many dying family members over the last 15 years, but caring for my sister has been the hardest. It is hard to see the signs I see, and know what they mean. It is also hard to think that a good part of my life has been spent caring for sick and dying family members, and that even when my sister is gone, that role for me will continue.

The only one’s left in my immediate family are my father, brother and sister. None of us married or had children. So, one by one we have said our good-byes. My gut is telling me that my sister may not survive the summer. Even she has told me she has her doubts.

What I sometimes wonder, is why? Why were we all so ill that we could not marry or have children, have steady careers, had to go on disability or become so poor due to medical expenses? Why does it seem that I am the one who will be the care giver for everyone else, and who will take care of me when I am the only one left?

Today is just one of those days, that it all seems so sad and unfair. So I would ask everyone, please remember what a gift your health is, your family, your job, your ability to do the things you like. Because it is so easy to lose it all, or to never really have any of it. And when you think you hate your job, don’t. Disability checks barely cover expenses and not being able to do things is so depressing. If you are angry with a family member, make up. They can be gone in an instant. Don’t do things that damage your health, your liver, your lungs, your heart, because some of us never have good health to start with, and we would give everything to know what that is.

Be grateful for the time you have, your family, your friends and your jobs; because they can be gone so fast, and you can stand alone, very alone.

Cricket, my heart goes out to you in your suffering. I’ll be praying for your sister and you. I have no answers to your questions, but I agree that people should think twice about allowing family relationships to languish or get broken over misunderstandings.

Cricket,

Thank you for giving me many things to meditate on: the gift of life, the gift of family, of love.

I will be praying for you and your family.

You dear good person. I have tears in my eyes regarding all the sorrow and losses of you and your family, but also for your kind, endless ministering.
I know what Jesus will say to you regarding your innumerable humble, kind, loving deeds of care of vulnerable family members.
He already made that clear in Matthew 25 verses 31-40.

I ask our dear Lord to provide loving care for you when your time comes, or that He will take you quickly, without lingering.
You have perhaps never heard of ‘gray martyrdom’…and martyrdom doesn’t entail a miserable attitude. A Capuchin priest attributed the name to the quiet heroism of persons like you who daily, quietly, humbly, faithfully live every day in loving service of others, often unnoticed and uncelebrated.

I thank God for you.
God bless and sanctify, in His quiet way, each of your family.

Much love,
Trishie

Although marrying and having children is the life most people wind up with, it is by no means the only path through life, nor is it necessarily the “best”.
I’ll be praying for you and your family, that you find peace and the grace to surrender to Jesus’s plan for your life. You sound like a caring person, and you’ve taken care of your family who needed you. Take comfort in remembering the comfort you gave them

I want to take a moment to thank all of you for your posts and kind words. I have never heard the term “gray martyrdom.” Though I have heard wise priests speak of “a daily martyrdom”, which is giving of one’s self up for God in our daily tasks and challenges.

Your prayers are sure to help all of us during this difficult time.

I don’t know why all these things are happening/have happened to you and your family. Things happen to all of us and sometimes it piles up and tries to push us down. You have given me so many reasons to be grateful for the good things in my life, I can’t thank you enough for your words. I’ll be praying for you, that things get better or at least you can handle them without so much sorrow. I want to share my newest bestest prayer with you. It’s as old as Saint Patrick but I love it…

St. Patrick’s Prayer
Christ be with me, Christ within me,
Christ behind me, Christ before me,
Christ beside me, Christ to win me,
Christ to comfort and restore me.
Christ beneath me, Christ above me,
Christ in quiet, Christ in danger,
Christ in hearts of all that love me,
Christ in mouth of friend and stranger.

Dear Cricket,

Be assured of my prayers for you.

I will try to paste here what I received today. I know the Bible verses are not from a Catholic Bible. However, when I was taking care of my family member/s I really did not look at the person’s religion when they offered and helped us. This brought non-Catholics to a better “knowing” of how a person who is Catholic deals with and has difficulties with our daily living, trying to stay always close to Him – the Giver and Provider of each thing. Matter of fact, the best Medical Doctor I found for them and who understood “our way/s” is Jewish!

From my own experience I will tell you that He will not fail you. Now I am in tears! Better go!

Blessings,

Luz Maria

A Caregiver’s Resolve

By God’s grace and the strength that the Holy Spirit supplies, I resolve:
To look upon this time as a caregiver, whether short or long, as God’s appointment for this season in my life.
To consider it an honor to be the Lord’s servant and to be an extension of His love to someone in need.
To do what I do from a thankful heart, with all my heart, as unto to the Lord.
To be quick to extend forgiveness to others, and to guard my heart against bitterness or resentment.
To maintain a quiet spirit that trusts Him fully for every need.
To seek those times, whenever possible, to take breaks, be refreshed, and “come aside to rest awhile.”
To choose joy, and not lose the gift of laughter.
To seek God’s strength in my weakness, to receive His mercies when I have fallen short, to draw upon His grace in my inadequacy, to receive His refreshing when I grow weary, and to keep the eyes of faith upon Him in every need I face.
The Lord is my Rock, my Fortress, and my Deliverer; my God, my keen and firm Strength in Whom I will trust and take refuge, my Shield, and the Horn of my salvation, my High Tower. I will call upon the Lord, Who is to be praised; so shall I be saved from my enemies. Psalm 18:2-3 AMP

A Caregiver’s Ministry

Caregiving does not need to be looked at as something we get “stuck with” or merely a duty or an obligation we have to fulfill. Caregiving can be welcomed into our hearts as a ministry given to us by the Lord.
It may be a hidden ministry that goes unrecognized by many, but it is a ministry that is seen by the Lord and one that pleases Him. In its simplest form, Jesus recognized its value and importance when He said, “Whoever helps one of these little ones because they are my followers will truly get his reward. He will get his reward even if he only gave my follower a cup of cold water.” Matthew 10:42 ICB
In Matthew 25, Jesus brings to us the value and ministry of caregiving when He said, “I was sick and you visited Me with help and ministering care…then the just and upright will answer Him, Lord, when did we see You hungry and gave You food, or thirsty and gave You something to drink… and when did we see You sick…And the King will reply to them, Truly I tell you, in so far as you did it for one of the least [in the estimation of men] of these My brethren, you did it for Me.”
Jesus is completely identified with His children. No one can touch God’s people in any way, whether for good or for harm, without touching Him. An example of this is found in the life of the Apostle Paul. On the way to the city of Damascus, when Saul (Paul) was making war on those who were “followers of the Way” he had a direct encounter with the living Jesus. That day, Jesus said to him, “Saul, why are you persecuting me?” Saul discovered that when he persecuted those who were following Jesus, he was also persecuting Jesus. From that day on, Saul became the man who ministered to Jesus by touching the lives of multitudes for their good and for God’s glory.
As a caregiver,
God will use your hands as an extension of His hands—to hold, to support, to embrace, to comfort, to bless, to help, to heal;
God will use your words— to encourage, to build up, to speak hope, to convey truth, to strengthen faith, to deepen trust, to impart love;
God will use your presence— to show care, to bring companionship, to wipe a tear, to sooth a pain, to dispel a fear, to rub a brow, to kiss a check, to hold a hand, to fluff a pillow, to reassure when there’s a setback, to celebrate when progress is made.
As God’s servants, the ministry of caregiving means that whatever it is we do to help another, even if it means the simple act of giving a glass of water to one of His children, the Lord receives it as a ministry done unto Him.
How blessed you are to be able to touch others for good and to minister unto the Lord in a way that makes His heart glad.

LuzMaria,

And all others: Thank you for your continued prayers and words of encouragement. This day proved to be harder than others, so they mean much too me.

I can see her decline daily, and have wondered now, just how long she may have. National Jewish cancelled a stress test for her heart as they fear it would give her a heart attack. We are getting ready to meet with her team of doctors next week. I think, in my heart, that there is little time left for her.

My sister’s one wish right now, is that she live long enough to witness a friends wedding on April 4, 2014. She is making the little girls dress. (This is a second marriage and the woman’s daughter will be the one bringing the rings down.) My sister just wants to see her friend married and her little girl have a daddy that cares.

My sister has said she is not sure if she will be here this summer or not. That is hard for her, and all of us. We are worried about how my dad will take it. He acts strong, but I know his heart is breaking.

So, thank you all again.

Crickit: I think you have a real advantage with God, He is Love, and He always reaches out to His children like a real Father. If You ask Him for a loaf of bread will He hand you a stone. Approach Him at His weakest point, His love for you, He is loaded with riches. Ask the Father in the Name of Jesus to bring His joy and peace to your family, and expect it. He loves that.and in faith, you can love and thank Him in advance Have faith in Jesus He can do all things. Life begins and ends in Him We suffer with the Lord, and we glory with the Lord it’s not all suffering. Jesus is merciful, and how He wants to show us mercy if we would only turn to Him. You may be part of His plan to bring others to Him. Bug Him, and if you bug Him enough, He will answer just to get you off His loving back:)

Yes, I know. You might say I bugged God a lot this weekend. But, I was not always so polite in my approach. It was just one of those weekends that everything that could go wrong did. My sister of course was sick, the little girl I help care for got sick, and so did my cousin that I am going to start caring for on a couple of weekends a month.

I landed up asking God on more than one occasion if “He was kidding?” So sorry!

But seriously I do know He loves us, and that our sufferings are part of being His followers. It just gets a little tough sometimes.

Cricket" You are solid, thats great. I knew a man, now dead, but a good and holy man that talked to a nun, (he was looking for advise on some real problems and apparently things were not going right.) The nun told him, "Give the Lord (excuse the expression) hell, He loves to hear from you! She realized that when he would do this, he was expressing his faith in God and you can not please God without Faith. I have been in similar situations, and I thought and felt that God was abandoning me, and I had five members in my family, jobless for four years but God saw us through. Not only that He really showed me something I need to know about people. As a matter of fact thats why I was made jobless, by my own innocent fault, but a serious one all the same. I always ask the Father in the Name of Jesus to give me help, and I like doing it because I love the adventure and even the challenge of practicing my Faith. I feel empowered by the Holy Spirit. It does get tough at times as you said, but you are not alone. I am always telling the devil to go where he came from, because he is the one who is causing so much pain and suffering. Alway turn to Jesus, and just tell Him you can’t always handle it! Then let come what may and roll with His tide. Always keep the faith, and if you do, then you will understand why and it will give you joy and love that only God can give God bless you always1 P.S reas my witness under church Militant

Cricket, praying for you, your sister and your whole family still. :hug3:

Cricket: We ask ourselves many times “Lord why me?” and sometimes when we need help, we are handed another “let-down” Do we ever consider the fact that every time these trials happen to us that we go to the Lord and ask Him for help, and when we do we find ourselves at His feet asking for relief. What if the reason for these trials was to bring us to His feet only to recognize that He was fulfilling our greatest need, Himself, and not His gifts? When we have Jesus, we have everything, and if we don’t have Him, what do we have. It is love for you to draw you closer to Himself, and thats our greatest gift, all else pales compared to that. You are blessed.

Cricket,

I am praying for your whole family.

Our Father,
Who art in Heaven,
hallowed be Thy Name.
Thy Kingdom come,
Thy will be done on earth,
as it is in Heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread,
and forgive us our trespasses
as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
Amen.
