Now, now, it would just be a disciplinary measure to make him calm down and to make him understand that his move was out of line. After he is done with his little tantrum, he will be able to have a decent conversation.

No, he wouldn’t. Having just gone through a lot of these types of interactions (minus the slap across the mouth) I can tell you first-hand that confrontations like that are not calming, they are escalating. Life is not the like the movies. Would YOU like someone to smack you when you are already charged up and feeling anger? I’ll bet not.

Yelling, screaming, hitting, crying - none of these causes a positive response in a conflict situation. Emotions just bounce around, wreaking havoc, doing further damage. The more calm one party can remain, the sooner the conflict can be dealt with in a rational way, to solve the problems.

You are just stirring up a response with your statements, fanning the flames. Grow up a little bit and get back to me.

You say that you understand but then you continue to defend using unchristian behavior (slapping him).

You are, I believe, 15 years old. Hopefully by the time you are older, and have children of your own you will better understand what we old fogies are trying to convey.

Peace
James
Firstly, I suppose I don’t consider it all that unchristian. It would have to rely on the intent. It would be a most loving smack. It would be done with the utmost good intentions if that makes sense.

Secondly, no, I don’t intend to have children. I am discerning the Priesthood and I am not 15, slightly older (the moderators have instructed me not to give it out 🤷).

Well, I guess there isn’t really anything else I can say to you except that several older, more experienced, people here have expressed to you how inappropriate it would be to strike this boy (man). This should tell you something…

Perhaps you should present this scenario to the one assisting you with your discernment and see if he thinks that slapping the 18 year old is appropriate or would be helpful. It’s not at all out of the realm of possibility that, as a priest, you could find yourself counseling the OP one on one over such a matter.

I surrender. I admit my error. I suppose I have been proven wrong. I guess I’m too “old fashioned” 🤷. Forgive me.

Hitting an 18 year old across the mouth is not “old-fashioned.” I am as old-school a parent as it gets - I’m down with spanking if done correctly, do not believe in back-talk, etc. - but never is hitting a child in the face an effective method of discipline. Did Jesus pop Peter in the face for any of Peter’s mouthiness? Did Joseph whack Jesus across the mouth for staying behind in the temple? For that matter, did Jesus go after the money-changers and slap them for being inside the temple itself?

At no age or stage is hitting a child in the face a proper response to his or her choices. Again, the time to take action would have been before the Bible had been set aflame, or if it was a sudden action somehow, go get a fire extinguisher, put it out, and invite the child to leave or be escorted out by the police. If any damage was done to the home, a parent would be fully within his rights to press charges and allow the adult son to pay for damages.

No problem. All is forgiven…

We learn by listening and prayerfully considering different viewpoints.
As I had mentioned, I know first hand how such violent responses can backfire. I do not wish for anyone else to suffer the loss of a child as I did.

Maybe he needed a good smack to snap him out of it.
Well to be fair, sometimes that’s the best you can do. Remember, it is a strong tradition in the Catholic Church that you are lightly slapped when you are confirmed as a reminder of things.

If a son of mine performed a sacrilegious I’d put him on his backside. If he just came home and declared his non-belief, a Protestant conversion etc., I’d kindly pack his things for him and show him the door.

Then I’d get the rosary out and start praying.

m crane’s comments above about what you can an cannot do with an 18+ year old got me thinking…

God tired to guide me — I couldn’t understand
God tried to guide me — I wanted to do it my way.
God tried to show me — I could not see Him - and did not know Him…

God’s patience with me has been incredible.

God’s patience with all of us is incredible.

So - be patient with the children - as patient as God has been with us…

Peace

God is patient and kind. He loves us so much that He never allows us to follow our own immoral impulses without consequences, But He is always waiting with open door to reconcile. Parents need to love that way with wayward children.
Of course your sweet wife could never be held responsible for any bad behavior. God has blessed you both. Your wife cannot sin and cannot be held responsible for her actions. You both are living a very holy life of great sacrifice.

God is very good!

Thank you for your kind words. I am indeed blessed…

How about you leave him the hell alone, he is a GODDAMN adult and should be able to have whatever beliefs he wants to have, without having his whiney *** zealot parents bitching at him 24/7, And the funny thing is I am actually SOMEWHAT Religious too, but this kind of **** just drives me insane, you should never EVER EVER impose your views on someone else, let the man be free…

How about you show some respect by not using the Lord’s name in such evil manner!

I am actually an atheist myself, but please can you show some respect to the people who believe on this forum by not using such poorly chosen words. This is a Catholic forum after all.

Wow this discussion is a hot mess. I can’t beleive some of you narrow-minded zealots actually think it’s acceptable to assault your own child for their differing of religious viewpoints, and that you would disown them and kick them out of your home for it.

Doesn’t exactly sound like the way Jesus commanded us to love our neighbor. 🤷

This XD Thank you! although you have a lot more experience holding in your emotions than I do, CONGRATS!

Zealots ? Who ? talking about judging?

The son burned the bible owned by his father and mother in their parent’s house? Isn’t that a sign of disrespect?

and…this is an old thread.

Why bring an old thread back from the dead?

If you would like to discuss this topic, it is best to start a new thread.

Or did you just want to take a swipe at the people that posted here??
