Thanks.

Is there any point to me praying the Act of Contrition, Anima Christi etc etc if I haven’t been baptised? I’ve been praying those and other prayers I found on EWTN’s website. Is there any point in buying rosary beads at this stage?

Thanks.

You can pray these prayers as you wish…they are for everyone. I like praying the Anima Christi…I have memorized it…🙂

As for Rosary beads…you can get them anytime you want too. You can use the beads to help you keep track when praying the Rosary (if you have not discovered it yet)…or the Divine Mercy Chaplet…among its use in prayer.

Can someone please explain again exactly what the Church teaches on the subject of Protestants ie whether they go to heaven or not.

There was something else I wanted to ask, can’t think how to word it. Like, how would a Catholic respond to someone who says I pick and choose what parts of the OT Law I obey IE ‘man shall not lie with man’ but I’m not bothered about wearing clothes made of two different materials?

And where does the Church stand on Israel?

Unfortunately, there are those of both religions who pick and choose what parts of the Moral Law they will/will not obey:( The Church considers the Jews our “elder brothers and sisters in the Lord” and children of Abraham just as Christians and Muslims are.

  1. Paragraphs 836-848 addresses those outside the Catholic Church.
    scborromeo.org/ccc/p123a9p3.htm#836
Here is a section of that portion:

*“Outside the Church there is no salvation”

846 How are we to understand this affirmation, often repeated by the Church Fathers?335 Re-formulated positively, it means that all salvation comes from Christ the Head through the Church which is his Body:

Basing itself on Scripture and Tradition, the Council teaches that the Church, a pilgrim now on earth, is necessary for salvation: the one Christ is the mediator and the way of salvation; he is present to us in his body which is the Church. He himself explicitly asserted the necessity of faith and Baptism, and thereby affirmed at the same time the necessity of the Church which men enter through Baptism as through a door. Hence they could not be saved who, knowing that the Catholic Church was founded as necessary by God through Christ, would refuse either to enter it or to remain in it.336

847 This affirmation is not aimed at those who, through no fault of their own, do not know Christ and his Church:

Those who, through no fault of their own, do not know the Gospel of Christ or his Church, but who nevertheless seek God with a sincere heart, and, moved by grace, try in their actions to do his will as they know it through the dictates of their conscience - those too may achieve eternal salvation.337

848 "Although in ways known to himself God can lead those who, through no fault of their own, are ignorant of the Gospel, to that faith without which it is impossible to please him, the Church still has the obligation and also the sacred right to evangelize all men."338 *
  1. There are distinct parts of the OT law. They consist of the moral law, civil law, dietary law, and ritual law. Moral law deals with morality and sin. Stealing, murder, homosexual acts are sinful. The moral law does not change. The other three were done away with in the creation of the New Covenant, as they only pertain to the Old Covenant.
Then there is the civil law, which details out the civil punishments that were to be enacted upon those who broke the moral, dietary, or ritual law. The dietary and ritual laws were enacted to separate the Jewish people from those around them. They specify certain actions and proscriptions that are, in and of themselves, not sinful. Wearing clothes of two fibers is not sinful. But it IS sinful if God tells you not to, because He is separating you from among other people. Just as eating pork is not inherently sinful. God wanted the Jewish people to be separate, and live differently than all those around them, and so instituted the dietary and ritual laws to set them apart.
  1. Answered in the sections of the CCC noted above.

didn’t know what to call this post.

My parents aren’t religious at all. I remember at primary school a baptist minister would come to the school once in a while and tell us funny stories and things from the bible, and in music we’d sing a lot of hymns. I even remember mum buying me a children’s picture bible thing at one point, but until i entered my 20’s i never really gave much thought to god.

In 2005/2006 i remember after years of listening to country music and the gospel stuff they always do, after hearing a song called a living prayer at a concert, i started looking up christianity on the internet. I remember at some point finding the sinner’s prayer and praying it.

I feel like i’ve had to keep my faith hidden from my parents because my dad gets verbally violent anytime i bring up christianity (or israel, or anything like that). He reads all these weird books about other religions and conspiracy stuff, and whenever he quotes something out of it to me, eg ‘the church is eeeeviiiillll’ he is always really angry and mad. But at the same time, he says he doesn’t believe in god, so i don’t know what he’s got to be so mad about since he doesn’t believe. Mum isn’t anything as bad as dad about it all.

I’ve got all sorts of bibles and stuff ‘hidden’ in my room, and for 2 or 3 years watched a non-denominational texas church online before actually physically going to a local baptist church last september. Again i haven’t told anyone in my family i’ve gone because i’m scared of how they’ll react. I listen pretty much to only christian music (kari jobe, tobymac etc) and post a lot of pro-life, family stuff on facebook and pray all the time especially for my family. I do still sin.

Ok, basically rambling now…

I don’t know if i’m supposed to post questions in this section but anyway;

ever since i started getting into pro-life stuff, i’ve been constantly drawn to catholicism…but certain things keep me away.

The ‘extra’ books of the bible.
Mary.
What i probably incorrectly see as ‘hatred’ of other denominations and their practices.

Help!
Do not sin, walk in truth

So, i’ve ordered an RSV CE, a copy of the Catechism, and some rosary beads.

I was really hoping one would come today but I guess it’ll be Monday now!

And I’m back to being torn again! Listening to some of the songs I usually listen to, and wondering “Is this a twisted gospel message?” “Is this wrong?” and then despairing about anyone who’s not a Catholic…

I’m still not getting straight or consistent answers.

I’ve got people on here as good as telling me that because I haven’t been baptised that I’ve been deluding myself and haven’t really been hearing from God.

I’ve got Protestant friends thinking I’m under control of demons.

I don’t understand why Protestants removed books from the Bible, and I don’t understand why Catholics removed books that were in the Septuagint.

Why would God let us be fooled for 1500 years before choosing Martin Luther and then countless more since to reveal “the truth”?

My main concern is either Catholics are right, and no matter how Protestants live their lives, they’re going to hell, or the opposite. How can I accept that anyone who believes in God and is serving Him honestly and faithfully will go to hell? Why would God not accept people who are suffering imprisonment and death for proclaiming faith in Him?

I’ve decided to not become Catholic at this stage.
Take your time, spend much time in prayer and study. Spend some time reading the writings of the Christians who lived in the first 5 centuries of Christianity. The Holy Spirit works on His time, and will guide you if your heart is open.

God bless!

David, Catholics do not believe that only Catholics are going to heaven. We believe that Protestants have some truth, but not the entire truth. We believe that we are judged according to what we know. If we know better, we are expected to do better. The quote from the catechism about no salvation outside of the church was taken out of context and not explained. We believe that everyone in heaven becomes Catholic because truth is revealed. It does NOT mean that those who are not Catholic are doomed. We also never say that someone in particular is in hell. Even if someone rejects God, you never know if they have a deathbed conversion. I believe a meeting with a priest would really help you with all your questions, and settle many of your fears and misunderstandings. Also, pray for your family. Your prayers are powerful, and the Holy Spirit will be moved. Pray and trust in God.

Don’t worry at this point about the music you are listening to. I started in the same place. The music was a starting point for me, as it is for you. If it helps you, then enjoy it. Probably what you are referring to about other posts about music, is what is being played at the mass. Don’t worry about that. Pray and please talk to a priest. You are being confused, and you have a lot of misconceptions about the Church. It’s so much harder on a forum, where you can’t have an actual conversation. A priest will really put you at ease, and help you to understand accurately. God bless you David, and keep praying. I will help you as much as I am able. Feel free to private message me if you would like.

Back and forth, back and forth, back and forth…

The main thing holding me back right now, what I’m actually crying about it is what about all the Protestants I know, the pastors and worship leaders I respect? The idea that they’re not following Jesus correctly and could be headed for hell makes me just about physically sick. :imsorry:
