Dear TOP, I am very sorry for your situation. Please document anything she does to you. Contact a lawyer, you might be able to get an order of protection. Again, I’m sorry.

As a woman, I do not understand how women as a whole get away with these actions. Just in the past few years news reports show women getting off leniantly with heinous crimes. Andrea Yates comes to mind…she killed her children, and the media practically blamed her husband for working so long and leaving her alone with the children. Another case where the woman shot her pastor husband in the back, as he slept. She served 4 months, because she claimed spousal abuse. She could have left, if he was asleep, he couldn’t be abusing her at the time. Finally, in NY 20 years ago, a little girl was beaten and lay dying for hours. The abuser had left her alone with the mom. WHO DID NOTHING TO HELP!!! She served no time, and became a poster child for abused woman. It didn’t change the fact that the girl died, and she could have called 911.

Not all woman are sweet delicate flowers.

Sorry for the rant.

Yes, but when you deny the holy Spirit there is only one other side. Satan!

And sorry, but sometimes the truth hurts. But I don’t say that because I wan’t to hurt you. But because the truth sets you free. I’ve seen many cases where the victum becomes the antagonist. And what’s worse is that the victum is blinded by a motive that seems right to them.
You know, Mr. Z, I told you once that you offended me. Why do you keep going on? This seems to be a hot topic for you.

Where have you “seen” these “many cases” where the victim of domestic violence becomes the antagonist? Are these women you know? Or are you an abuse counselor?

As long as we are judging people’s motives, if you have to say “I don’t say this because I want to hurt you,” before you say something, you know it’s going to hurt, and you say it anyway. That doesn’t sound very honest to me. When you hear that little voice inside that says, “hold your tongue,” I suggest heeding it. It’s the Holy Spirit.

The double standard indeed is very saddening. 😦 Interesting points, Mary.

I would like to say, my wife is a practicing Catholic as well as my kids. She grew up in the Byzantine Rite, but now goes to the Latin mass. We have talked to a counsoler once a few years ago and my wife was offended when the Dr. layed into her. We never went back. I talk often with my priest and he knows my family well. I even asked him if he thought I was called out of my vocation to comtemplative life, but he said that is very rare. As far as physical abuse, that is light, example, a punch to the arm, shoving, and the last time, I put my arm around her waist and she elbowed me in the ribs saying, “get the **** off me”. The verbal stuff is pretty bad. I often try to talk with her and the response is usually “shutup”.
In 2005, I had a spiritual experience. This has been confirmed by 5 different priest"s, including some of whom are very gifted SD’s, one of which was a SD for Relevent Radio call in case’s. My wife witnessed this experience. We met with our priest, explained the situation and I was confirmed, with my wife as one of the sponsers, into the Church. The same day, we had our civil marriage blessed. Our priest expiadited the process as it happened just a few weeks after the experience. We have been together 21 years. One Sd said that my wifes prayers saved me from “eternal seperation from God”.
I can’t go too far into my experience other to say it was a divine intervention. In it, the Lord loved me to show me how to love and with it was a warning that I am but just a steward of what belonged to Him, my family. So in turn , everything I learn about the Church, the Saints… I tried to teach to my family. My wife would say things like , “ya your a saint…” to shut me up. Honestly, I don’t believe I am going to make it to heaven, but I don’t what my loved ones in the same situation. I think she resents me practicing the faith. I know she doesn’t want to talk about it. I sense some jealousy, but she doesn’t know the price of such an intervention. NFP killed our sex life. She does not want to get pregnant. She has said, if I get pregnant, you are staying home with the baby, because I am not quiting my job. She has even said that she would kill me if she got pregnant, then goes into how I ruined her life…So I just sleep on the couch. The last time we where together, I said, we need to get together more often and she responded, " ya, I’ll pencil you in". It’s pretty messed up for sure.

Well I’m no sweet delicate flower 😃

My husband could write a thread on a secular advice site like this:

My wife doesn’t respect my views and she’s constantly attacking my beliefs. She’s a religious buff and is always on my case about me coming to church when I just don’t want to. She slams doors and sometimes smacks the wall while saying mean things to me when we are fighting. She swears at me and is always nagging me about something. She can be a real #####!!!

Yes, I am no sweet delicate flower. I am very rarely like the above paragraph, but on occassion I do act terribly as does my husband. We both have issues that we need to work on together and sometimes our fights are not acceptable in the way we treat eachother.

Overall, we have a really great marriage, but that 10% of the time when we are being mean to eachother, we should both really take a step back and look at the damage we are doing to eachother.

I also think that women/men who cry abuse on CAF may in some way be contributing to their abuse…they just don’t admit to their own faults and abuses towards their spouse.

That’s why marital advice on CAF is so dangerous.

*😦 This sounds bad, TOP. I will pray for you and your wife.

Not defending your wife, but a good counselor doesn’t ‘‘lay into’’ his/her clients. They are there to facilitate dialogue between spouses, and help you reach conclusions on your own. Facilitate, not humilitate, and lay into. So, you didn’t have a good counselor there.

We of course are only hearing your side of the story…but I’ll repeat again, no one has the right to abuse you. Your vows are not a license to accept abuse. I don’t shove my husband. I don’t punch his arm, or threaten to kill him. I don’t verbally abuse him. I don’t call him names. I don’t elbow him in the ribs. This is so wrong, I can’t even begin to tell you. Because a woman is doing this to a man, doesn’t make it ‘‘okay.’’

It’s no wonder we see commercials where women are degrading men, and the men are crouching in the corner. Yoplait comes to mind. There are commercials showing women punching men in the arm, and the men crouching down…it’s like, when did this start becoming acceptable? We give advice to men in our society, as though, it’s his fault this it’s happening. If a man were elbowing his wife in the ribs, shoving her, and making idle threats to kill her…sarcastic or not…we would be telling him to get a lawyer. This man doesn’t deserve any less respect because he is a man, and his wife is the abuser.

FROM THE SOUNDS OF THINGS, it seems that your wife has abusive tendencies. Just because she’s angry with you, doesn’t give her the right to treat you like this. I get angry with my husband sometimes, but I don’t resort to this…this is not normal marital behavior, so you know. I think you do know, otherwise you wouldn’t be posting here. :o She needs help. You need help too because your self esteem is probably thrown out the window. Gosh, I’m so sorry this is happening. Your wife sounds like she is hurting, but again, that doesn’t give her the right simply because she is your wife, to hurt you. I will pray for you both…*

That sounds very sad 😦 I’m sorry that you are experiencing this!

It’s b/c of God that your wife would get pregnant, not b/c of you! Pray for her BIG TIME that she soften her heart to you and to God.

If she knew her cycles inside and out then she would know the safe times for relations better than you. I don’t understand why it would be your fault???

Hey, I’m no saint either 🙂

Why would you think you won’t enter Heaven??? What makes you so terrible a person to not go to Heaven??? None of us are perfect and we all make mistakes. It troubles me that you think you are destined for Hell it seems. Have you told a priest about this?

You know, Mr. Z, I told you once that you offended me. Why do you keep going on? This seems to be a hot topic for you.

Golly, where do I start. I had this friend once that was picked on alot. He was a nice kid, too, like a butterfly. But one time he was pushed too far and punched a police officer. Sometimes kids like this turn around and shoot up their schools. I myself was like this. I hated getting picked on so much I couldn’t even take a joke later on in life.
It’s kinda the same thing in a relationship. Sometimes past emotions have an effect to your current relationship.

Just because I don’t wan’t to hurt you doesn’t mean I won’t.
I have no intentions of holding my tongue. We as Christians shouldn’t always pamper each other. Sometimes, we need to be rebuked.

I think I picked up this traight from my too honest pastor. Once I came up to my pastor to complain about my worldly family amd how I don’t know what to do with them; and instead of offering rest, he rebuked me and said I needed to be stronger in Christ that I may win over my family. This hasn’t been his only moment by far. One time he had this mean old lady come to his church and say, “Brother Denis, I wan’t to be frank with you.”
And she walked around like a “chicken ready to box” as he described. And before she said anything, Brother Denis said, “No you don’t, you want to be mean and hateful.”
She’s like, “huh?”
Brother Denis said, You can be Frank, and I’ll be Earnest. And earnestly, I think you’re going to be mean and hateful. Now just admit it.

But he did that for a reason. Because somewhere along that woman’s life she had the misconception that to be mean and hateful was the same thing as being “frank.” Was she offended? Yeah…
But atleast she’s honest when she’s going to be mean and hateful.
Just like when I’m honest about when I’m going to offend you.😃

NFP killed our sex life. She does not want to get pregnant. She has said, if I get pregnant, you are staying home with the baby, because I am not quiting my job. How many children do you have? Did you used to use NFP in the past and did it fail you?

Why is she blaming you for having been a stay at home mom? Did you pressure her to become one?

As Christians, we are to speak truth with charity. As Christians, we are not to be a stumbling block to others, yet you do that when you insult people because you are attempting to incite an uncharitable behavior. Christians are not to insult people. That, among other reasons is why uncharitable posts are against forum rules.

Furthermore, you have put words into the mouths of other posters with statements like “but not when she is ignoring the Holy Spirit”. No such references have been made or even implied. Such comments seem more straw man and not constructive or make a contribution to the thread. I will add that I find it interesting that you only seem to attack women.

I am a man. I am also the victim of spousal abuse. My ex-wife often lost her temper, yelled, insulted my religion, slapped, hit and hurt me. On one occasion, while I was recovering from surgery, she even denied me food and water when I was bedridden. When I complained, she attacked me again and broke some bones. However, I knew that if I even defended myself, I would be the one arrested. After all, no one is going to think that a 5’4" 105 woman with a bruise on her wrist is capable of attacking a 6’ tall, 250 pound former weightlifter.

I think you should reflect on how self-righteous you have been on this thread, cease your attacks and begin to practice authentic Christian teaching, speaking truth with Charity. If you fail to do this, I suspect you will not be a member here for long; moderators have a very low tolerance for this.

I consider it denying the holy Spirit when you can’t even meantion God in your house without being called a nut. And the reason I rebuke her is because even if there is two sides of the story, that doesn’t make her’s right. Reguadless, because she’s denying the holy Spirit.
And I don’t think charitable rebuking should be used in this case. Why did Jesus rebuke Paul and call him satan just for being concerned with His death? Because he had in mind the things that concern men rather than the things that concern God. In the same way, I can’t stand how some fend for an abusive woman for the sake that she’s a woman!

From what you describe of your life and your marriage - it sounds like you both have had a really stressful time of it. I know that I haven’t or do I know of any of my friends that have experienced a near death long term illness, a spiritual awakening, or an about face of a spouse. Even one of those would be a very stressful occurrence, and I would think you’d need counseling to get through them, as would your wife.

Hang in there. I will offer prayers for you.

Nobody really cares she’s a woman I believe. But you’re rebuking without love. The scripture do not say to rebuke without charity. It says to always be charitable in when we correct. It is NEVER okay to not be charitable…especially in a situation like this.

In a situation like this? I think an abusive person deserves no charity. In other words, why cast your pearls to pigs? I’m not rebuking without love, I’m rebuking because of love. Jesus wasn’t always charitable when rebuking. In fact, I think it was the contrary to charity most of the time. But just because He was stern, does that mean He didn’t do it out of love?

I think it better to focus on the OP and not the distractions…

OP thank you for giving us more insight into your situation…my heart goes out to your family. If she is truly speaking to you in such a harsh manner and being sarcastic about your intimate life, then it seems she is trying to provoke some sort of response from you. Surely she does not presume that these behavior can go on ad nauseum…

I am glad RPP was able to post on this…if he hadn’t, I would have recommended you PM him about this. Spouse abuse is serious regardless of which spouse is the abuser. I hope you are praying for her fervently…St. Thomas More is the patron saint of difficult marriages. Perhaps you could take counsel from the spiritual leaders you mention in your posts.

Just remember how our Lord allowed himself to be beaten and abused without protest that He could bring about a permanent change to the fate of humanity…His is the ultimate example of love and sacrifice in the face of unspeakable behavior. If you shower her with love and self sacrifice then perhaps she will reconsider her behavior…but if not, at least you will have been as much of a blessing as you could be to her as a person you love and want the best for, and you can make prayerful decisions regarding your future together.

I will pray for you and for her.

Your first sentence is about as sensible as one who says, “I listen to the sound of light.” It is a non-sequitur. None of the posters suggested what you claimed. It attempts o justify an utterly unwarranted attack on another person. Where is the humility in this position?

I agree that charitable rebuking is is good. Sadly, that is not what you are doing, you are attacking women for what they have not said. That is profoundly wrong and your “excuse” is profoundly self-righteous.

It is interesting that you ignored my experience as abused husband, held hostage by the truth that women are generally not suspected as abusers. Yeh, you really demonstrate Christian carity there.

Are you able to see into the hearts and minds of people like Christ could? If so, then go ahead and screech at people. But if you cannot, you should consider being more charitable. Finally, can you tell me where, in scripture, Christ called the Apostle Paul “Satan” and rebuked him in the way described?

Perhaps you should listen to another poster, FunnyYetSavy. Focus on the original post (OP). Women are not the only ones abused in marriage.

You ignore the fact the fact that women can and do indeed abuse men based on the fear that real men have that women can physically abuse them with impunity because the expectation is that only men abuse women. Address that and you will start to connect with reality. If you fail to do this, and choose to continue to attack women, you will no be a member here long as you will self destruct.

ALL people deserve to be treated charitably. Period. When you make such a statement, you are rebuking without love, despite claims otherwise. Such a statement is inherently uncharitable and canot be said with love. Can you read hearts and minds like God can? If so, cool, go ahead, just prove it to us first. Finally, I am quite uncomfortable that you compare your behaviors with Christ;s. Most people would not be wiling to do that. Why dlo you think your behavior can be favorably compared to Our Lord’s?

sigh You let my point fly right over your head.
The only reason I was rebuking a woman on this thread is because she was showing charity for the woman in the OP’s scinerio. Sorry, but I will never believe an abuser deserves charity. Period.
And that Is what I’m not ok with.

As for that Scropture you ordered, it’s Matt. 16:23. (and sorry, I meant to say the apostle Peter.) -Paul heavily rebuked Peter as well.

It’s amazing that you go on to say,

“You ignore the fact the fact that women can and do indeed abuse men based on the fear that real men have that women can physically abuse them with impunity because the expectation is that only men abuse women. Address that and you will start to connect with reality.”

I was like, BINGO! Not everyone deserves charity. And I think that is where we’ll disagree. An abuser deserves no charity. Male of female.

Please know I am so very sorry for what you are going through. I can’t imagine your struggles. I cannot offer anything that others haven’t already offered. :console: One thing I want to add though is that I know your wife is doing some terrible things to you, but PLEASE don’t call her “the devil”. No one deserves that. 😦
