Naked pictures to spouse

Ok, so I’ve been thinking about this thread for a while and I have a couple of thoughts I’d like to throw out there for people to think about. 🙂

First, I have been just as confused by clem’s posts as you, Deb, but I think I might have figured it out. Clem did explicitly say that he agrees looking at a naked picture of ones spouse is not inherently immoral, so I think that in the rest of his posts he is just ignoring that distinction (even though he accepts it) because he thinks it will weaken his argument against sending such a picture if he acknowledges this distinction while making his argument against said pictures. I could be wrong about that, but hopefully if I am clem will step in and correct me.

Next, I was thinking about all the reasons brought up in this thread why a person would send a naked picture to their spouse, and they all seemed rather light-hearted (well, the morally acceptable reasons at least ;)) and it got me thinking about another possible reason, which might seem like more of a legitimate reason to those who believe naked pictures should never be shared, even between spouses. Well, I guess it would be more correct to say the questions asking why a naked picture rather than a clothed pictures are really what got me thinking about all this. Well, in order to answer that question why not look at what role nakedness plays within the marital relationship (we are talking about married couples after all :D). Within marriage, nakedness has a special, I would claim even sacred, position. Rrevealing oneself and standing naked and vulnerable before ones spouse is one of the very unique and special ways that couples show their openness to each other and their willingness to give themselves completely and entirely, heart, body, mind, and soul, to their spouse. So why send a naked picture instead of a clothed one? To show that despite the distance one is still opening themselves up to their spouse, becoming vulnerable before them, and is still willing to give their entire selves, every aspect of their very being, to their spouse. It would be a special reminder that despite the distance they still belong entirely to their spouse and are still commited to giving themselves completely in this special and sacred way.

Another thing I was thinking about was Debora’s claim that those who disagreed with her had a negative view of sexuality. I’m not entirely convinced of this. I think to a large extent it is more a matter of living out their marital relationship in a different way, one that sees no reason or point to sending such a picture to their spouse unless it were for lustful purposes and who would view receiving such an image kind of like mtbender described in his post. So long as their disapproval of sending a naked picture does not stem from a negative view of nakedness within the context of a marital relationship but rather from some other perception about pictures and what their effect is/what they mean/what they imply for that person etc then there is no reason to think that they have a negative view of sexuality. If, however, anyone disapproved of such a picture because of a negative view of nakedness within the context of a marital relationship then they would indeed have a negative view of sexuality and one which contradicts the teachings of our dear JPII.

Here is a passage from TOB that were brought up earlier in the thread which confirms this
You make some good points especially about the human body being displayed in marriage. There are too many puritan hangups, surprisingly even with those who are wedded. However, one must be careful sending photos through the various modern forms of transmission. This is more the issue at hand, to me at least. I mean, that was the OPs original concern.

I just wouldn’t want to the chance that others could mistakenly see my wife nude all because of a glitch in technology or other reasons.

I agree with most of what you stated, but would argue still that being naked is not the only way to do it… And if it is, there are greater issues at hand. I do not have to be naked for my spouse to understand that I am entirely hers. I do not have to be naked for her to understand that we share something that no other two people will share. She doesn’t have to be naked for me to want to hurry home. She doesn’t have to be naked for me to understand the special and sacred bond that we share… It seems to marginalize the marital relationship if we look at the role of sexuality in that way.

The only thing I can think is unique to photos such as this is the overt sexual tone; making the focus the physical desire (not necessarily in the absence of the spiritual and emotional aspects). So I guess it would once again go back to the intent… Have fun, show you care, show you are thinking of him, show your commitment, reaffirm the sacredness of your marriage… all can be done with your clothes on.

Great discussion by the way, even if it appears no one’s mind is changing. I always enjoy respectful, intelligent dialog here.

And for clarification, I am not saying it is inherently morally wrong, I am just suggesting that those who are considering such a thing should really examine the intent and outcome in the context of their marriage. Certainly it will not be the same for everyone…

I completely understood you bender, thank you. 🙂

How can anyone respond to that?

If we are going to have a realistic discourse about this can we at least address the important points people have made.

Cutting people out of the conversation with “Thanks for the participation” is not how you direct a discussion.

🤷
Hi.

There is no need to respond to that. Bender gave me his personal perception and told me how he would feel if his wife gave sent him a naked photo, and I simply told him, thanks for the insight but my husband feels differently. And yes, I did appreciate him sharing his sentiments, I just know my husband wouldn’t feel the same way. Bender told me himself this was his personal opinion and that it may be different for other people, and I respect that.

As for the main point of what he’s saying, well, I agree with his main point. He’s saying that he doesn’t think it would be inherently immoral, but that caution must indeed be taken. I agree with that completely.

My “opinion is way off”. Way off what? The truth?

We are both arguing opinions on the surface, but beneath this discourse is something much deeper, and that is the objective truth to the matter; whether or not what you are doing is right or wrong. Hint: It’s wrong

So far I have offered theoretical examples and referenced Catholic Theology of the body to reinforce my side of the argument. At no point have you logically refuted anything I have said, instead you’ve thrown baseless assertions (see above quotes) and empty statements like:
I’ve already explained this to you, but let me try again.

None of those references made it sound like sending a nude photo to your spouse is wrong. The reason you think they did, is because you already hold the belief that doing so is automatically impure and not a reflection of any sort of self gift. You also believe that it is impossible for a husband not to see his wife as an object while seeing her naked in a photo. But none of your own references even alluded to that. Only your personal interpretations of them did, based on a belief you already had to begin with. Wanderer explained it to you as well. Twice now.

What follows by that logic? That truth is determined by popular vote.
No, of course not. I only said that in response to you making the claim that I’m being completely stubborn and not agreeing with anyone, when really, I actually agree with the general consensus here. Just not with you, like nearly everyone else here.

I don’t really understand why you are trying to dissect what I have said in such an aggressive manner, but here goes.
Sorry if I came across as overly aggressive.
This movement to give-oneself wholly to another is an internal movement which expressess itself through external actions, it is essentially the desire to give oneself completely, to reaffirm ones complete and unconditional gift of self to other. Since it is an internal movement it cannot be judged solely by external actions.
So I see here you’re focusing on the internal desire, rather than any external/physical “act”. I find this hard to swallow, as you acknowledge that while it’s an “internal movement” it still “expresses itself through external actions”. I do understand that willing/desiring the good of the other does not always necessarily or automatically result in a physical action, but how else does one express such will?

You seem to disregard the external aspect quite abruptly by stating:
Since it is an internal movement it cannot be judged solely by external actions.
Now while I agree that you cannot judge it solely on external actions, you really didn’t give much clarification as to why it’s predominately an “internal movement” either, other than that it’s “essentially the desire to give oneself completely, to reaffirm ones complete and unconditional gift of self to other.” < but as you just said, this is expressed through external/physical actions.

In short, what I have gathered from this is: while we can will/desire(internally) the good of the other, we must express this through some kind of external action (charity, compassion, physical affection etc.) and (correct me if I’m wrong) you take the external act of photographing ones naked body for their spouse to fulfil this “external action” adequately?

To clear this up a bit (and in reference to Catholic Theology of the body) we can define both the internal and external aspects of the nuptial system as two sides of one coin. The disagreement here is what facilitates a sufficient “external” aspect to this nuptial system, and you are arguing in favour of “uploading a nude image of ones self” (for their spouse). Or is it that you take the external aspect to be wholly insignificant?
“I seriously do not see how anyone could assert that such a desire could never come about from looking at a picture.”
How is the recipient to “act” on such a desire? Would it be the same way he/she would act if it was a loving text message they were responding to? If so, then why the need for a naked image of oneself?
An adequate response, therefore, to a nude photo of ones spouse which is** intended as a sign of ones desire to completely give oneself **would be the mirrored desire of a reciprocal self-gift. I seriously do not see how anyone could assert that such a desire could never come about from looking at a picture.
You mention that the photo is; “intended as a sign of ones desire to completely give oneself”. I find this interesting.

You believe that this “nude image” works as a “sign” when the prerequisites of such a “sign” do not at all need to include the naked body of either spouse uploaded to a digital device. The naked human form is not an abstract thought, it is not a 3D computer design and it’s not a handful of pixels; it is very much a physical thing. Taking it out of its physical context so it can become a “sign” or “signifier” of “desire” for your spouse is blatantly reducing its significance. I don’t see how anyone can disagree with this.

Why take something so paramount to the nuptial system as the physical naked body and reduce it to the digital format for such a purpose, when there are other alternatives?

Is there something which makes the naked form more important than these alternatives? As we already know, removing it from its intended natural/physical context can have many unintended consequences.
You believe that a photograph is incapable of eliciting an adequate response, I do not. Since I believe a photograph is capable of eliciting an ‘adequate response’ I see no contradiction between JPII’s statement and the conclusion that there is nothing intrinsically immoral about spouses looking at nude photos of each other.
The “adequate response” JPII references in his ‘Theology of the Body’, is of paramount importance to the nuptial system. As I mentioned briefly before, if a mere “photograph” is sufficient for providing an “adequate response” then it would be theoretically possible to have a complete nuptial system without any physical contact whatsoever; (which is absurd).

I would also imply that the nuptial system relies on both the internal as much as the external (two sides of the one coin), and that while the internal desire may be present during the exchange of photographs, the external aspect is profoundly lacking.

In the end, I believe this key distinction of the importance of nakedness is something which we must not ignore. “To be fun, romantic, and give him a reason to want to hurry home” is not a sufficient reason to compromise the nuptial system.
I’m sorry, but the condescension in this remark is not exactly appreciated, especially since I have explicitly said this same thing multiple times throughout this thread.
Sorry brother, I actually didn’t mean to come across as condescending, more of a light-hearted riff at the end of a long-winded reply.

Hi

I was thinking about some thing here.

John Paul II, Fides et Ratio

“Human perfection, then, consists not simply in acquiring an abstract knowledge of the truth, but in a dynamic relationship of faithful self-giving with others. It is in this faithful self-giving that a person finds a fullness of certainty and security.” (bold added, italic added)

I see nothing but negative coming from this.

First off, if you think the data is NEVER going to go anywhere but 2 phones, read your 10,000 word disclaimer for the phone and every app. You will find the opposite.

Everything on your phone currently has been seen by many people. And as it crosses wires it is stored throughout the network.

Why would you want to put your spouse in a position to masturbate? A grave sin.

Giving him a naked picture of yourself or anyone and a hotel room is only asking him to do so.

There absolutely is a common sense ‘right’ and ‘wrong’ here.

When did sending him a picture of your smiling face need to go any lower? I’m sure he loves what he can’t see.

I agree with ffg. Another very important thing you might want to take into account before sending the photo is what I have discovered in my experience in my own marriage and with speaking with other wives in the CAF support group, “Women Suffering Because of Unchastity,” whose husbands have gradually progressed to viewing pornography instead of them (and all of the sinful actions that go along with the porn). Like you, we also never believed our husbands would be the type to head down that path…but they have. As a previous poster mentioned, your husband isn’t Jesus, and no husband (or wife for that matter) is perfect. We’d love to think they are, but they’re not. Why on earth would you want to let satan have a chance at tempting your husband to sin while he’s away or at any time in the future when you may not be available? I’m sure satan loves it when we all try to rationalize things that we want to do that could possibly lead others (or even ourselves) to a near-occasion of sin.
When things are going well in a marriage, we sometimes can get very complacent and think, “No, that could never happen to my marriage, and my husband would never do that,” but sadly enough it COULD very well happen to your husband as it has to countless others. For that reason and all of the many others mentioned by well-meaning posters on here who feel it’s not a good idea, please think about our common goal as wives to try to help our husbands get to Heaven. Maybe that thought will help.

Thanks bmaj, I get where you and others who have been extra weary about the whole thing are coming from. I think I just happen to be a little more optimistic about the whole thing, but I agree that caution and prudence are important.

With that said, I am sorry to hear about your hubby’s addiction. I will keep you in my prayers.

This would definitely NOT be considered pornography. I actually think this is a romantic thing to do. If it helps keep the spark alive, and helps to think of your spouse while you are apart, I would think think this is very healthy and unitive.
👍 It’s so much easier to keep the flame going then it is to re light it and I couldn’t think of a better way.IMO, you can’t be pornographic with your wife if you love her the way God intended. I think that’s why He gave you a body, to remind him of all your other qualities and it’s good to remind him of ALL those qualities.

Ugh. I just wrote up a response and then lost it all. :manvspc: Ok, here goes a second try 🙂
Sorry if I came across as overly aggressive.
no worries 🙂
So I see here you’re focusing on the internal desire, rather than any external/physical “act”. I find this hard to swallow, as you acknowledge that while it’s an “internal movement” it still “expresses itself through external actions”. Ok, since I lost my earlier attempt, I’m just going to be blunt, it sounds as though you think the only external expression within a marriage that can adequately express this internal movement is the act of sex. Yes, I entirely get that this is the highest and most fitting physical expression of this internal movement, but it is not the only external expression which can be used to express and signify this internal movement. Have you never caught a loving look, a smile, a simple “I love you”, or even just a small and trivial action of some kind from your spouse which caused you to be blown away because through it you saw just how much they loved you and were commited to you? There are a vast array of external actions which can be transformed by this internal movement within a married relationship to become an adequate response to the other. I just don’t understand how anyone could think otherwise and claim that the only way they could externally express their devotion, commitment, and self-gift to their spouse is through sex. I’m sorry, but a relationship where the only way of externally expressing ones love and commitment is through sex just sounds like such an empty relationship, I can’t possibly imagine living that way.

Also, what do you say to a couple who can’t have sex for 6 weeks after childbirth, since they are temporarily unable to have sex would it be demeaning for them to see each other naked during this time? Must they start changing in seperate rooms to ensure they avoid even a slight glimpse of their beloved without clothes on? Of course not, that would be ridiculous, they are temporarily required to abstain for each others good, during this time the abstinance itself can become an adequate expression of their complete commitment to each other whereas seeking relations even when harmful to ones spouse would in fact end up being a very inadequate expression. Yes, sex is extremely important, but it is not necessary at all times.
How is the recipient to “act” on such a desire? Would it be the same way he/she would act if it was a loving text message they were responding to? If so, then why the need for a naked image of oneself?
Because for some people (although not all) the action of sending a naked photo would be more easily recognized as an external expression of this complete commitment of self, for them, it is a better mode of expression than just a text. 🤷

And this is where we disagree. You don’t see how a naked picture could ever possibly be a form of expressing a deep inner commitment. As such, I would strongly advise you never to send one and to make sure your spouse would never send you one. However, this just is not the case for everyone. Some (again, not all) people would actually see such a photo as a very deep and meaningful expression of their spouses commitment to themselves. I realize that if you are not that way it might be hard for you to recognize that this actually is true for other people, but it really is.
Why take something so paramount to the nuptial system as the physical naked body and reduce it to the digital format for such a purpose, when there are other alternatives?

Is there something which makes the naked form more important than these alternatives? As we already know, removing it from its intended natural/physical context can have many unintended consequences.
As I’ve explained, because there are some people for whom it is a better exprresion than merely saying “I love you”.

And here I am going to have to disagree with you. You seem to be implying that the natural context of nakedness is having sex. I see the natural context of nakedness as the marital relationship itself. Its ok to get changed in front of ones spouse, even when neither of you are thinking about, or planning on having sex, because nakedness is not something that belongs to sex, it belongs to the marital relationship.
There are such things as Josephite marriages. 🤷

But seriously, it sounds as though you are putting a little too much emphasis on sex. What happens to a couple where one of them is incapacitated such that they can no longer ever have sex. Is it now impossible for such a couple to ever express their commitment to each other? Are they doomed to a relationship that is no longer marital in nature? No, of course not, because sex is not the only way to adequately express ones complete and entire gift of self to spouse. It is extremely important, but just because such an expression becomes impossible a couple dos not then become incapable of expressing their commitment to each other. Sex is not the only way, although it is an extremely important way.
I would also imply that the nuptial system relies on both the internal as much as the external (two sides of the one coin), and that while the internal desire may be present during the exchange of photographs, the external aspect is profoundly lacking.
I would argue that the external would naturally follow from the internal, however, it will not always be in the form of having sex, as that is not the only way to express your commitment to your spouse. 🤷
In the end, I believe this key distinction of the importance of nakedness is something which we must not ignore. “To be fun, romantic, and give him a reason to want to hurry home” is not a sufficient reason to compromise the nuptial system.
That is not a reason that I gave, neither do I agree with you that sending naked photos automatically compromises the nuptial system.
Sorry brother, I actually didn’t mean to come across as condescending, more of a light-hearted riff at the end of a long-winded reply.
Its sister actually,😉 and don’t worry about it. 🙂
