National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation–my Christmas ritual!

Christmas Carol (the one starring George C. Scott–my favorite!–also my Christmas ritual, and usually at least once during the summer, too)

The Hiding Place (World Wide Films) (in college, my best friend and I went to see it every night that it was in the theaters–it’s a great movie, and Julie Harris is amazing in anything, but especially in that movie. Also Eileen Heckart–wonderful acting! A great story, although the book is better).

Victor Victoria (we had cable back then, and after I had my first baby, whenever I got up to nurse her, every blessed time this movie was on!–I actually grew to like it! Robert Preston is wonderful, and of course, so is Julie Andrews)

Dracula (1931 Universal, starring Bela Lugosi)–such a great film!

We also watched Poltergeist many many times back when we had cable, and I really like this film, too. Great “strength of family” message.

Yearly traditions growing up:
  1. A Christmas Story

    (When we knew some of these were coming on- my parents would let us get the TV dinners of our choice and we’d be allowed to eat them on a TV tray in the family room. This was the only time we would get TV dinners- the old fashioned kind.)
Other movies I’ve seen well over five times:
  1. The Wizard of Oz (Didn’t this come on TV like once a year or so back in the 80s?)
  2. The Princess Bride
  3. Labyrinth
  4. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (old and new version)
  5. Return of the Jedi (I was obsessed with this movie in the 8th grade and watched it repeatedly on beta.)
Movies I sometimes showed back when I taught:
  1. The Odyssey (I probably have the dialogue memorized at this point.)
  2. Ben Hur (I never showed the entire movie- mostly the chariot race scene.)
  3. To Kill a Mockingbird
  4. Fahrenheit 451
  5. Gladiator (Again- I never showed the entire movie.)

Is it a good movie? I have never seen it all the way through. But you’ve reminded me: the same director made Be Cool, one of the very few post-2000 movies that I really like.
