Petros is the masculine form of rock.
Petra is the feminine form of rock.
The masculine and femine of the Greek normally has the feminine being larger and/or prominent. It actually fits into Dan Brown’s theory of Sacred Feminine.
Now back on the topic.
Jesus when he named Simon has Petra he used the proper gender for the name, but Matthew goes on to show the significance of the naming by referring to the larger feminine.
Take note, that the Petra/Petros heresy may have had already been an issue, so by the time that John wrote his Gospel which was after all the other Gospels and Epistles of Paul were written, He used the transliteral Aramaic of Rock (Kephas or Cephas) to attack this uprising heresy.
Here are the verses that use the Aramaic:
Joh 1:42 And he brought him to Jesus. And when Jesus beheld him, he said, Thou art Simon the son of Jona: thou shalt be called Cephas, which is by interpretation, A stone.
1Co 1:12 Now this I say, that every one of you saith, I am of Paul; and I of Apollos; and I of Cephas; and I of Christ.
1Co 3:22 Whether Paul, or Apollos, or Cephas, or the world, or life, or death, or things present, or things to come; all are your’s;
1Co 9:5 Have we not power to lead about a sister, a wife, as well as other apostles, and as the brethren of the Lord, and Cephas?
1Co 15:5 And that he was seen of Cephas, then of the twelve:
Gal 2:9 And when James, Cephas, and John, who seemed to be pillars, perceived the grace that was given unto me, they gave to me and Barnabas the right hands of fellowship; that we should go unto the heathen, and they unto the circumcision.
