The multiplication of fishes and loaves? It was the miracle of SHARING!
**
While I personally believe that Our Lord materialized more food, which is the harder thing for Him to do: make more bread and fish out of nothing, or move hard and selfish hearts to generosity?

It’s a miracle of the Lord either way.**

** I think he believes that by taking all the hard aspects of the faith away, more people will be attracted to the Church.**

There was a clergyman like this in C. S. Lewis’s SCREWTAPLE LETTERS. The result was that he shocked his people by his own disbelief.

Just goes to show the power of the media to poison our minds (and souls)… because something is said on TV people tend to believe it (myself included, unfortunately…:whacky: ).
Actually, the priest (and the History Channel) was right. What do you think ‘magus’ (as in, the singular form of ‘magi’) means? They were magicians, astrologers, and scientists. Why do you think they were looking out for weird stars in the first place?

Strangest thing I’ve ever heard in a homily was at a funeral where the priest strongly implied that the deceased had been deified.

It could be the priest meant to say that we Catholics (& other Christians) did not do enough in the war… i think it can safely be said that we Christians never do ALL we can do (absolutely speaking). I think that if we did do all we were capable of … maybe abortion would not still be legal?? Or am i engaging in fantasy thinking or something?? I tend to think that now that the Sup Ct has taken over the decision… it is kind of hopeless to get abortion outlawed… Roe v Wade overturned???
No, never hopeless. When we hope in the Lord, we are not hoping in vain. (Fr Corapi)

I thought that too–what you are saying about the priest’s homily relating to the Holocaust…but, he left a lot to one’s imagination that day. It was not one of his best, let’s say that. (and he is normally so good…and clear with his messages)🤷

The only other strange thing I have ever heard in a homily, was a priest (two Sundays ago) talking over and over again about Heath Ledger’s performance in Batman–I’m like…and this has to do with God…how? lol:shrug: He somehow tied it in with secular accolades…but it was out there! 😛
We had a really good one which started with ‘on friday I went to see Handcock, now the film is…blah blah blah…’ It was about rememebrance and memory etc etc . Can honestly say it is only the second homily I have ever understood and actuary remember. 👍
confession and as a penance had told him to do 15 decades of the rosary. My parish priest said he replied “and you can go to hell”. He laughed as he said this, but none of us did.
15  I don’t think my priest ever changes it, tis always 1 Hail Mary and 1 Our Father no matter what you did.

I was shocked by a priest’s disbelief also. After the story of Jesus’ tempation by the devil during his 40 day fast in the dessert the priest said:
“we don’t have to believe that there was actually a devil there, tempting Jesus - it’s more of an allegory…”

  • A priest quoting the History Channel of all things! As in “I guess the wise men were actually astrologers. I learned that on the History Channel the other night.”
That has roots in Catholic tradition from a theologian saint, but I can’t remember which one (so I’m not even going to guess). Pope Benedict makes mention of it in one of the essays in his book “On the Way to Jesus Christ.”
The gist of the tradition was that the birth of Christ fulfilled the aims of thestudy of the cosmos and brought an end to the study of astrological patterns.

!

I in general don’t like to be critical of priests, but sometimes I think priests can try to hard to be “down to earth”.

Very true – I think that’s the case with our priest, who makes many inappropriate remarks during homilies I think in order to appear “cool”

I heard a priest say “MY God doesn’t send unbaptized babies to limbo.” Some in the Mass thought this “horrible” priest was teaching heresy. But I do not and agreed with him.

Is his God different to our’s then? The fact about limbo is that we just don’t know. We just entrust unbaptized babies to God’s mercy. We cannot be dogmatic either way and it is false to try to be so.

From the Catechism:
As regards children who have died without baptism, the church can only entrust them to the mercy of God, as she does in her funeral rites for them. Indeed, the great mercy of God who desires that all men should be saved, and Jesus’ tenderness toward children which caused him to say: ‘Let the children come to me, do not hinder them,’ allow us to hope that there is a way of salvation for children who have died without baptism. All the more urgent is the church’s call not to prevent little children coming to Christ through the gift of holy baptism, (CCC 1261).

Heard in a weekday Mass homily by our then new pp “What is the one commandment that nuns and priests break everyday?”

Dead silence!

Father: “Increase and multiply and fill the earth”

Some laughed, others looked like fainting…

wow… that’s bizarre…

It would be funny if the bishop assigned him to be an exorcist… 😃

Bet that would put all his doubts to rest…

was it supposed to be a joke??

Actually that is not one of the 10 Commandments…

But is kind of interesting because we ARE supposed to do all that the Word tells us… I don’t have a problem with religious celibacy (practice it myself:hypno: :ouch:  )… but i could see where some Protestnat would bring this up as an argument against it…

The best argument in favor of lifelong celibacy (for me) is:

Men and women don’t relate well together… (they really do seem to be from different planets):whacky: :banghead:

so when did Jesus ever say that we had to be “cool” to get to Heaven???

:hmmm:

:hmmm:
Well, given that Hell is somewhat hot, Heaven must be infinitely cooler, hence only the “cool” people get to go to Heaven!
