The Exorcist is a great movie for several reasons (I’ve read the book and loved it as well). First of all, Father Damien (the lead priest character) is going through a crisis of faith, thinking of leaving the Church altogether when he is called to bravery in dealing with the devil himself. When Father Karras, the elderly Exorcist who is supposed to be the master of dealing with such things dies of a heart attack in the middle of this exorcism, Father Damien is overwhelmed with personal attacks by the Devil that get into his head, deep. He fights and prays but is so overwhelmed that he decides to take the devil into himself to free the girl, sacrificing himself, falling to his death. It’s about doubt, bravery, sacrifice, and shows how flirtation with the occult (Ouiji boards, etc) can lead to serious diabolic assaults. William Peter Blatty, the author of the book, went to Georgetown and is a Catholic. He always wanted to fictionalize the story he heard about a real exorcism that was very similar. I thought the movie is great, terrifying, and in the end, edifying in the bravery of the priest. It is NOT in any way an anti-Catholic flick or a film making priests look weak.

And there is a VERY moving scene at the end of the movie, it always gets me, when little Regan, the possessed girl, comes out of her house. She is now no longer possessed and remembers nothing of the experience. But when another priest comes by to wish her mother well, she looks at his priestly collar and runs up and kisses him on the cheek, knowing somehow in her heart that she was saved by the Catholic Church. I thought it was great.😉
thanks for that… i recall some of what you say happening in the movie… but again, don’t think i saw the whole thing…

In any case, even if the demon wnet into the priest, something i think is highly unlikely even if the priest asked for it… i just don’t buy it tht the demon would kill the priest…

Jesus sent demons into swine… not humans… and i don’t think God would allow such a thing… .but then, now i think about it, i think i did hear of something similar… but it didn’t involve an exorcism… hmmm… just some vague memory… I’ll have to try to rack my brains and get back to you on this… but still, priests & bishops didn’t like the movie because it wasn’t entirely accurate concerning the rite of exorcism… don’t have details as to why…

even so, i do have more respect for the movie since reading your post…

This is so great! Everybody is so peculiar! Here goes:
My sons wanted so badly to see “Three Kings” but my daughter and I dragged them to “Random Hearts”. We will never, never live it down. The 4 of us sat there grinding our teeth at the waste of our life watching that eternity of celluloid with Hans Solo being a sissy cuckold.
"Random Hearts’ has become a family word for: a) trusting critics…b) being polite with awful results! c)and therefore, missing something great like “Three Kings”.
So, with so many vying for bottom place, I cast my vote for “Random Hearts”,

“The Beast of Yucca Flats”
Period.
End of Discussion.
No way. No WAY!

How can you disparage the oeuvre of the great Coleman Francis, whose cinematic genius, indeed whose entire raison d’etre, consists of people randomly shooting at other people from airplanes?

😃

Awesomely bad terrible movie–Evil Dead 2

There is literally a scene where the main character kills a zombie, looks right into the camera, and says ‘Groovy.’ Originally meant to be a horror movie, I can’t remember laughing so hard as during this movie.
Aww come on, ya gotta like Evil Dead 2!! LOL…Ash wearing the chainsaw on his arm hunting down zombies in that cabin lol…being attacked by his own hand, and being chased by Aunt Henrieta the zombie, classic stuff!! LOL…I’m with ya on the “groovie!” part lol…

I liked Dune until I could not stop seeing the correlations to the Savior Jesus in it and threw it out. Water of Life? Not from Kyle McLaughlin. Of course when one hits a golf ball into the sand trap, Shai Hulud must be said! … only if one is the Cuisinart Haberdasher!
I have to disagree with you a bit, Earnest. If you read “Dune” and even watch it, it’s not at all about a Christ-like character. In fact, “Dune” is based more on Islamic themes. Frank Herbert not only admits that but you can just see it seeping through every part of the story. The “Mahdi” is a deliverer in Islam and “Muad’dib” is nothing but a take-off on it. He is a deliverer saviour in the Muslim lens, not Christian. The Fremen, the people who await Muad’dib, are very Islamic. Their names are Muslim-like, they have tribal customs, mercy killings, you name it. The water of life was in no way a baptism metaphore or something paralleling Christianity. It’s just sci-fi voodoo lol…“Dune” is about deep concepts like precience, self-fullfilling prophecies, folklore, politics, the environment and what happens when you tamper with it, addiction (the spice), and intrigue (the bene gesserit vs. guild, Emperor vs. Atreides, etc.). And if you continue to read the second book, “Dune Messiah,” you see Paul really go down the tubes caught up in his own mystique and becoming a tyrant that almost can’t control himself. He conquers planet after planet in a “jihad” (again, Islamic) mercilessly. And he realizes he hates who he has become. “Children of Dune” that is book three continues the story. Great stuff, man! I think it’s a blast. Love it.

“The Beast of Yucca Flats”

The Beast of Yucca Flats…pretty rough stuff!! I remember seeing it once with my buddy. Tor Johnson? LOL…I have to say, though, that the Incredible Two-Headed Transplant or Dracula vs. Frankenstein (Al Adamson) blows it away for lame and hilarious! Not at all the end of discussion, Quarles! LOL When Frankenstein looks like he has a banana cream pie for a face and a mullet and Dracula looks like Frank Zappa with a decoder ring, you’re in trouble!! LOL Throw in Lon Chaney, Jr. as a full-on alcoholic who was doing the movie just to pay for booze and J. Caroll Naish, whose acting is so bad you’ll actually cover your face and watch through your fingers like a bad train wreck, and I have you beat! LOL

*I remember 10,000 BC being very bad. My dd and I started watching it, and gave it 10 minutes. It was so boring! *

Also keep in mind that he worked on a limited budget and couldn’t keep re-filming a scene until the actors got it right as is the case with modern films. He had enough money to film a scene only a few times. If it didn’t come out perfect, he had to go with the best version of that scene that he had.

Also, he needed an established star to be associated with the film, otherwise it would have been an even bigger flop. That’s why he had the dead Bela Lugosi starring in the film.
:wink:I’m still trying to understand why your reasoning had me (briefly) going, :hmmm:“Oh, yeah, dead people probably do work cheaper…”
(You did see the part where I said, I actually:blushing: own this one, right???:yup: )
Any movie with broccoli in it should be banned. :bounce::yup:
:doh2::rotfl:

You know what movie got so so reviews but I thought was really quite good? Radio Flyer…anyone see that?

MARS ATTACKS!
WOW was it STUPID!!!
Worst Money I Ever Spent!
My friend liked it but, I just couldn’t wait until it was over!
LOL! My brother gave this DVD to me for Christmas a few years ago - I took one look at it and hiked over to Sam Goody and traded it for The Two Towers! :rotfl:

Bill Murray’s Lost in Translation. We left half way through, and its the last movie that I’ve been to in a theater. I finally gave up on Hollywood after that movie.
You’re right. It ranks among the all time worst movies ever.

Ok I forgot

Godfather III; man they even had the Vatican involved.

JFK; according to that movie even me and my mother was in on killing the President! I can prove I wasn’t in Dallas just ask my first grade teacher Miss. Edwards.

I’ll But I am also aware of how “cool” it is for the critic or watcher to approve of this whole genre because it’s just so “revolutionary chique”
breaking barriers and hey, they say to themselves, I belong to these trend setters. After awhile, hearing a bunch of guys swear profusely for the whole movie to establish their street cred, you almost feel you’re watching a teen producer trying to show how cool he is with it all (i.e how many dirty little words can I come up with before mommy hits me). It becomes, for lack of a better term, incredibly childish and puerile. When there is no redeeming plot or character, it is the film equivalent of “shock art” and basically only reinforces the notion of the banality of the violence on the screen. I hate this trend in recent movies.
i think a lot of Hollywood movies fit the description you give… which is why i never see movies these days… only watch old ones… and not many of them…
