Oh…Be-ah-tri-che, but softer. It’s pretty in Italian
Just about any name sounds great in Italian. I would have liked to name one of my boys Dominic or Angelo, or one of each! But my Irish husband didn’t think they went well with our last name. There are lots of Dominics in Ireland. Not so sure with Angelo.

My beloved mother-in-law had a perfectly normal name—Jean. She got tired of people saying, “Hi Jean” (hygiene) to her and laughing uproariously. My husband is a “George,” and he got sick of “Curious George, the cutest little monkey” when he was a child. I’m a Kathleen (Kathy for short,) and I got called “Chatty-Kathy” in school (Yes, it fit.) There was a doll by the same name in the sixties. I guess some wag can always find something clever to do with our names–but it’s inexcusable when a parent decides to exercise a sick sense of humor when he/she names a child.

When we lived in Tennessee, there was a college football player named, “Peerless Price.” I always thought that was a splendid name. His mother had high expectations for him!

However, I think traditional names are by far the best. I just bought a book mark with my name on it. It says “Kathleen” (Pure.) I am trying to live up to it…🙂
I was Debby Reynolds and one of my sisters was Candy Cane a lot. One of the young women here was telling about how upset her daughter Sam was when the kids started calling her Sammi Sosa. She didn’t want to be a Cub! She’s a Cardinals fan.

I’m fascinated by names, but I do find some of them awdward. A woman I know is named Sandy Heine. I don’t care how swell her husband is, I’d have kept my maiden name. A friend who was a teacher had a boy one year with the first name of Mister. I guess his folks wanted to be sure people spoke to him with respect.

I’ve heard a lot of people who claimed to know Orangello and Lemongello, and a few named Female (fe-MAL-ae). In addition to the Hogg sisters, Ima and Ura, there were supposedly a girl named Christa Shanda Leer. Real names so maybe that’s for real.

I don’t know if the mother is to blame for this one but I knew a young woman from Uganda whose name was Euphagenia. They called her Eufa (pronounced “you-fa” for short. She married a man and refused to take his name because her name would have be Eufa Kerr (pronounced “cur”)
This is not a joke. Had I been kidding I would have splashed this comment with little computer smileys.
Was her last name Doubtfire by any chance??
Kathy

And mine. The only Shannon’s I ever hear of are born within 5 years of when I was. They succumbed to the trendy name thing back in 1976 and I’m stuck with the result.

Oh well. 🤷
When I was in Catholic school back in the late 60’s (8th grade) the sister teaching would call Kathleen and 8 of us stood up.

I love ‘Angus’ and other old celtic names-- I have nephews named Liam and Seamus. One of Seamus’s teachers actually thought is was pronounced ‘See, Moose?’ even though he lives in a pretty ‘Irish’ town.

But as to uncharitable, could be… but maybe we’re saving some poor child from being named something awful.
There was a girl in my son’s class in Year 12 named Siobhan (pronounced shi-VAWN), a good Irish name and fairly popular around these parts. They got a new math’s teacher from Viet Nam who spoke English as a second language. He refused to accept what the kids told him about how it was said and kept calling her Sibohan. She wasn’t amused.

I know of a man whose first name is Ennis. But it’s pronounced as if it rhymes with the male organ. POOR GUY…YIKES.

Hey,

I got 9 years on ya! There were only two of us in elementary and three of us in high school. I quite liked it not being very popular. Except when I wanted to buy name stickers…the closest I got was Sharon. But my sister had it worse. Her name is Sloan. My mom got it off a movie in the 60’s. Diamond Head I think. I decided to keep it in the family and used it for my first daughters middle name.

My daughter goes to school with a Rusty Redd. As well as a Cash. And one named Minor. My cousins daughter is named Feather. This is just off the top of my head, I can just imagine how many I could come up with if I thought about it:)

I wondered when Cash would come up. I am proud to say I have a Cash.

I love the name Tuesday (for a girl), always have, always will. Someday I hope I can use it! 🙂
I like it too.

Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban just had a girl they named Sunday Rose which I think is uber cute too.

I happen to like Cash too;) …is it short for Cassius or just Cash?

I’ll never forget when my son went to kindergarten and I introduced him to the class, and one little boy chimed in…“Henry? What kind of a weird name is Henry?”.

Turns out HIS name was DonVittario…

Cassian. And it’s a saint’s name too…actually, several saints’.

My Mom hated the name when she first heard us thinking of it; now it’s her favorite boy name ever. And three friends have gone from What are you naming him? to Can we use that name if we ever have a boy? How funny! 😃

👍 Great name!!! I love Henry. 🙂

We called my great-uncle “Cash”, but probably because that was a nickname for part of his Italian last name, which sounded like “Cash” (and even almost sounds like “Cash he ones”). Besides, he was also an accountant… 🤷

I’ll admit, one traditional girls’ name I like is Anne (spelled with an e of course ;)). I find it pretty and it’s the name of one of my best friends. And yes, she also has read Anne of Green Gables so she’s extremely quick to correct anyone who forgets the e at the end of her name:D

My name is extremely common. I meet like seven girls a year with my name. I don’t like my name for that reason. Lol, I wish it was the second part of my screen name (Maria), but no. It’s funny because my mom thought Maria was too common at the time she was having me! (but I’m Italian, from a very Italian/Portuguese area, so go figure).

I did have a lab partner named Judith last year. Gorgeous name and Biblical! She was studying abroad here from Nigeria.

For the guys, I think I know a million guys named Mark, Matt, Mike, and Chris. That hasn’t changed, regardless of where I live. I bet if I called out one of those names, I’d get stampeded, lol.

Did anybody read the articles about the couple in New Zealand that wanted to name their son 4Real? Why? Because when they saw the ultrasound they realized that the pregnancy was “for real”. Well, the government stepped in and said that it was illegal for a child’s name to start with a digit. OK, the couple said. We’ll name him Superman and call him 4Real. ~shakes head~ You have to wonder if, at any point, they considered the child’s feelings or if they just wanted to annoy the government by picking out another wacky name.
Another pet peeve of mine is when people create unnecessary alternative spellings for normal names. For example, Bri’Yanna (Brianna) is the daughter of a co-worker. It also makes me wonder if people realize that an apostrophe in a name indicates a guttural stop in the pronunciation.
On the other hand, I have a few friends who have some up with some beautiful names for their children. Rowan Sage, a unique but lovely name. Sophia Isabelle. Louisa Rose. Daniel Khaled (the father is an Arabic linguist).
Personally, when I have children I want names that are actual names (no inventing things like LaPaula’quette, who was my cashier at Target a while ago), but aren’t super common. My name, for example, is Jennifer. ~sigh~ It gets annoying to have five friends in your social group with the name name.

Who knows? Maybe my future kids will hate the names I give them because by then it’ll be fashionable to have names like Apple and PIlot Inspektor. “Mom, why couldn’t I be Jermajesty? Andrew is sooooo last decade!”

I actually know someone who named their baby “Cash” on the birth certificate. Because the parents “hope he always has lots of cash” 😛 I was able to come along and tell the distraught grandma about St. Cassian (thanks to you ;)) and now she feels so much better about the name!

So true!

DH and my Dad think the name Benedict Augustine is ridiculous but I love it. (“you can’t name your kid after Benedict Arnold!” “I’m not dad, I am naming him after the Pope!” “Well, still… everyone will think it’s Benedict Arnold!” “Not Catholics, Dad.”)

On the other hand, DH also thinks that Miriam Esther is too “jewish” (“but we’re NOT jewish!” “So? It’s traditional to name the first daughter after Mary” “But we’re not Jewish!” “Fine, then I will name her Tasha Fix-it, just like I always wanted to name lil sis.” “Miriam Esther is fine”)

LOVE Cassian.👍 St. Cassian of Tangiers is my personal favorite St. Cassian. A great saint to be named for.

Have a friend with twin boys named Caspar and Cyrus. Everyone thinks she was trying to be ‘trendy’ with those names until she tells them their ancient origins. There are a lot of OLD names, saints names, that could do with a revival. catholic.org has the best list of saints I have seen for anyone looking for a saint baby name.

I use catholic-forum.com/saints/. I wonder if they pull from the same database? It looks pretty similar to the site you use.

Either way, both are packed full of saints and saint info. GREAT site. (We used it to name both Cassian and Killian.)

Only thing I would have to say about Killian is that he may get beer jokes. Or ppl calling him Irish Red, Irish, or just Red

Hasn’t happened yet. 🙂 I laughed telling my DH when we named him that I hoped he married a red headed lady - I myself would call her Irish Red. 😉

He mostly goes by Killy now. When he’s older we’ll call him Kelly (Killy is very babyish). Kelly is a family name and we’ve wanted to use it for awhile, but there were never any Saint Kellys so we didn’t. Then the name Killian kept coming to us, and we were getting little “signs” if you will here and there that his name should be Killian, so we went with it. Came to find out LATER that Killian means Little Kelly. How clever of God! 🙂

PS - Killian’s is my favorite beer EVER. 👍
