My beloved mother-in-law had a perfectly normal name—Jean. She got tired of people saying, “Hi Jean” (hygiene) to her and laughing uproariously. My husband is a “George,” and he got sick of “Curious George, the cutest little monkey” when he was a child. I’m a Kathleen (Kathy for short,) and I got called “Chatty-Kathy” in school (Yes, it fit.) There was a doll by the same name in the sixties. I guess some wag can always find something clever to do with our names–but it’s inexcusable when a parent decides to exercise a sick sense of humor when he/she names a child.
When we lived in Tennessee, there was a college football player named, “Peerless Price.” I always thought that was a splendid name. His mother had high expectations for him!
However, I think traditional names are by far the best. I just bought a book mark with my name on it. It says “Kathleen” (Pure.) I am trying to live up to it…
