well maybe thats where their mom got the idea, but as those girls were on a basketball team a former girlfriend played against i kinda know firsthand that it was the case.
 
In my editing job, I come across about 100 names daily. One that I saw recently was…Sexally. I’ve also had Younique.

i believe in australia or new zeland, i forget which, that it is. names have to be approved before being official. i think they justified it by calling it a form of child abuse. i like the idea but it seems easy to be abused, like the way we made immigrants change their names on arrival at ellis island.

I almost named my DS Atticus after the Saint of the same name. I quite love that name…to each his own I guess:)

while im glad its not my name i think atticus is an ok name for a boy. dont think any of mine will ever get it, but it wouldnt really seem that odd to me.
 
You know just an FYI there is already a LOOOOOOONG thread on ‘weird’ baby names, which got pretty ugly and uncharitable.

I’m not sure what purpose a thread like this serves if it is only to criticize others tastes in names??

There is no accounting for taste, nor is it a sin to have bad taste or bad judgment in naming your child.

I personally think it’s just as annoying when people use trendy names ad nauseum rather than coming up with something original.:twocents:

Ima Hogg was a well-known philanthropist from Houston, who died in the 1970’s. I don’t know what her father was thinking when he named her, but she was quite a lady.🙂

yes, and i believe her nephew was the head of the chem dept at texas a&m for a while. a pretty impressive family.

And mine. The only Shannon’s I ever hear of are born within 5 years of when I was. They succumbed to the trendy name thing back in 1976 and I’m stuck with the result.

Oh well. 🤷

It’s not the case in Australia, not sure about New Zealand but I believe in France and some of the Scandinavian countries it is. And I agree, giving a child an obscene name should certainly qualify as child abuse, so they at least should be illegal, but perhaps not merely unusual names, though something like ‘Trivial’ would be borderline at least.
 
i suppose wierd names will always happen. now as to the obscene i wonder if that is ever a misunderstanding. something normal in one language is obscene in another? i doubt its common but i still wonder.
 
I’ve known/ ran into at work people named: Harry Butts, El Moe, & Don Key.
 
At one time, our very small country schoool had kids named Sunshine, Piney, Bleu, and Ricey [that’s Rice-ee, not Ricky].

But so long as they aren’t obscene, I’d rather see some originality than yet another Jennifer.

I dislike it when a nice normal name is used with a spelling that makes the folks look like idiots-- ‘Antwone’ for Antoine.

Oh, and ‘Randy Buck’ used to work for me.

Shannon, though is a lovely name, I think the oldest Shannon I know is in her 60s.
 
As a teacher,every year I get to ask myself what parents were thinking when they named their kids. I could go on forever and ever, but I think I will share the worst one I’ve had. A few years ago I was in an international school and we got a British girl midway through the year. She hands me her entrance slip and I just about lost it. Under the name section…Vagina Butts. No kidding.Its pronounced a little bit different but all I could think is did her parents hate her. I mispronounced it the first time, so she had to correct me. And then of course all the other little children found it hilarious so they started laughing, put a stop to that one real quick. Apparently it was a family name, but even other British teachers I worked with mispronounced it. Poor girl, she said as soon as she is old enough she will change it.

My husband and I are always talking about baby names for our future children. We’re getting all the silly names out of the way with our pets (they are Biblically themed: Jezebel, Delilah, and we’re adopting a greyhound that we will either name Zipporah or Ramses/Moses).

We keep running into all these trendy names, and some of them we really like. We have chosen the following so far:
Mya Annette
Brianna Marie
Tyron Douglas
Zachary James

My dad has asked that we pre-approve our children’s names with him, since he’s very picky. He was made fun of a lot for his name and doesn’t want that to happen to our kids. (My dad’s name is Lyle Leon, which I don’t think is bad, but 🤷)

I just have to say that if we are blessed with another daughter some day, Shannon is definitely on my list – I think it’s beautiful! :yup:

Nothing else to add really, other than I love the title of this thread. :rotfl:
