After looking at the image for a while, I must confess to coming around to your interpretation. He was obviously smugly smirking, and if you look deeper into his eyes, you can actually see him imagining himself at Wounded Knee or wishing he had a smallpox ridden blanket to give to the noble Native American tribal elder who clearly only wants a return to a more harmonious time when man lived in harmonious harmony with nature . If you look even closer, you can see he has obvious climate denier sympathies. That young man is pure evil.
A ha ha ha! Okay, that was a good one. Made my coffee in mid sip spurt from my nose. Clearly that is what it is. Was reading an article in GQ that doubled down on the kid after the NBC interview. Apparently, they soft balled it and didn’t extract the proper penance from the evil MAGA youth.

Predictive programming in the MSM, you’ll often see in news comments. A MAGA hat might as well be a sheet hood.

Whoever goes after these kids now…well it would be better for them to tie a millstone around their neck and plunge it into the sea.

Slowly cruising across a lake in a motorboat, line trailing behind?

Having Custer in his name means he started the whole thing, right? He probably had scouts there advising him not to do it.

Anybody who knows anybody who goes to the March for Life knows that this is like a pilgrimage. People are so moved by the experience and many experience a deep conversion. The marchers are joyful and respectful.

This the the type of people who go to this event:

When Mr Philips walked over to tone things down
Has anyone brought up how fascinating is this whole spectacle? All the people directly involved have “spun” their intents and actions. The U.S. viewer has had the opportunity to demonize this party, then that one, then that one, etc.

And then when we viewers ascribe “bad intent” (not that you were implying such, vz71!🙂), we are in turn projecting all the stuff that we condemn within our own selves.

In truth, there is no one to vilify in the entire scene. All were, at their very deepest, well-intended, trying to make the world a better place. Yes, during the action of making the world a better place, they were at times distracted by their own anger, resentment, and associated blindness. Some were frustrated at times, and yes, trying to vie for the center of camera attention, and wanted to be the ones in control of the tone of the entire encounter.

All well-intended, all people loved by God.

Like I said, the entire situation and the public reaction is simply fascinating! 😁

We have the same evidence that we have about the intentions of the boy he faced - his statement.
The boys statements have this far proven reliable.
Not so with the native american.
Phillips has thus far proven unreliable.
Not only has he changed stories, but the video evidence also runs contrary to his word.
His behavior the next day in attempting to disrupt Mass also indicates his lack of credibility.

The boys statements have this far proven reliable.
What is the proof?
Phillips has thus far proven unreliable.
What has changed? What in the video is objectively contrary to his word?
What is the evidence that Phillips attempted to disrupt the Mass, rather than demonstrate outside the church?

Nathan Phillips and the Media’s System of Incentives
The Native American activist at the center of the Covington Catholic story, Nathan Phillips, attempted to enter and beat his drum at Washington, D.C.’s Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception during a mass Saturday night. The church’s security kept him out.

That anecdote reveals that Phillips seeks out public confrontation, appears to have a beef with pro-life institutions, and is willing to disrupt other people’s religious ceremonies. It’s much tougher to see him as a well-meaning victim of others’ malevolence with this information in mind. (There’s also video out this morning of Phillips discussing being “in theater” during Vietnam, which is not accurate; according to the Marine Corps, he never served overseas.)

According to Memeorandum, you heard about Phillips at the Basilica if you read NR, the Daily Wire , RedState, Legal Insurrection, the Resurgent, Mediaite, or a slew of other right-of-center web sites. You wouldn’t hear about it if you only read the New York Times , the Washington Post , or only watched CNN or MSNBC. Phillips has been at the center of a four-day media firestorm, but all of the media organizations that have covered the Covington Catholic story extensively just didn’t find Phillips’ actions at the Basilica even worth mentioning.

I find it interesting that some posters here are quick to make negative judgements about the students’ behaviors, yet do not accept factual evidence Nathan Philips’ behavior.

I find that to be the least interesting, and most predictable part of this whole imbroglio. A white, Catholic young man, wearing a MAGA hat? To some, even some Catholics, he may as well have been wearing Klan robes.

Yes that’s the new meme the left is spouting.MAGA hat is the new white hood🙄

Probably not in Covington Ky, though.

Hindsight is how we improve. How about not smirking, smiling or whatever that was? There was nothing funny about the situation. How about trying to engage the guy like an adult, offering to shake hands and introducing yourself? How about being the leader to tell your classmates to sit down and listen to him? How about removing the hats for prayer and saying a rosary instead of a school chant, representing Jesus and not the president. I wasn’t there, which is why talking about the situation would have to be a dialogue.

Mr. Phillips questioned what is being taught to children these days. This would be the type of instruction that can build more than manners, but resiliency and flexibility. It is the type of teaching that Mr. Phillips seemed to have missed in his childhood.
You say “How about trying to engage the guy like an adult”. Mr. Phillips s an adult. Are these kids supposed to make any sense out of this guy beating his drum in their face? That makes no sense. Phillips could have said something and explained what he was doing. It is interesting in his effort to “diffuse” the conflict he approached the students, not the Black Israelite group. It would have been interesting if he had done so and to see how well they would have received and reacted to it. My guess he would have gotten a very different reaction than he did from this kid.In criticism of these kids response, I think some of it was the naiveness of youth. They really had no idea what was going on. I realize in some of your other statements you do seem to want to add a balanced perspective, so that is appreciated. The students could have done many of the things you said, say a Rosary, etc. Let’s remember they were 14-16 yrs old. I don’t believe at that age,(or probably even now), I could have handled it with the dignity that they did. Mr. Phillips is a basically a professional protester, he knew what he was doing. He created his own reality.

Unrelated to your post , but I think it is terrible he has also used his military background to elevate his cause. He is not a Vietnam Vet. He has seemed to do little to curtail this myth. From the last interview I saw, it sounds like he may only have been in the reserves, not even active duty, definitely not in Vietnam. This is a disservice to those who have served in that War. Even if this professedassociation is by omission, he should have corrected it. Non-substantiated claims have alleged he has used the claim to raise money for his cause. I have only seen that in one source so I don’t know this for a fact,

In any event Nathan Phillips has gotten the attention he as seeking at the expense of the young people and the accusations against the Catholic Church outside the Mass.
