The kid obviously didn’t quite know what to do. Probably he had been taught that if somebody tries to bully you “just smile” and try to ignore him. That guy Phillips was right in his face with that drum and chanting, and there were others of his group there.
What I would like to know is the background of that kid to the right of Sandman. He’s Amerind of some kind; possibly Hispanic.

I can keep going if you like. The better question is, what has Phillips said that IS true. Because so far he has said nothing but lies.
In addition, we know that Phillips intended to crash the mass, because in the video posted above, he says “go inside in small groups, they can’t stop you”, then the group walked up to the doors and were prevented from going in by the guards closing the doors.

Lost in this whole Monday-morning quarterbacking of “what the kids could have done differently” is the fact that this is only a news story because Nathan Phillips made it a news story by running to the press, giving them an edited video, and telling them he was surrounded, harassed, and verbally assaulted by racist white catholic teens. They were accused of being staunch racists, of seeking out minority groups to harass them, of wearing blackface in public to mock black people, and people want to criticize them for cheering and dancing to a guy beating a drum.
Let it also be known that the kids were confused as to whose “side” Phillips was on because they had been watching, for the past hour, the Black Hebrew Israelites verbally harass the Indiginous People’s March. They had been watching the BHI hurl insults at the Native Americans, and many of the Native American marchers confronting the BHI. Then the BHI were telling the Native Americans that they should harass the school kids because they were “white oppressors”. When the BHI began focusing more of their venom at the kids, the kids decided to do the school cheers to drown them out. So at this point, the BHI have been hurling insults at the Native Americans and the kids. At this point Nathan Phillips and a few others walked over to the kids and were beating their drums more or less in time with the cheers. So seeing as the BHI has been insulting both of them, and the Natives came over, why wouldn’t the kids assume that Phillips was there beating his drum in solidarity? It wasn’t until he singled out Nathan Sandmann and one of the Natives started telling them to go back to Europe that they realized that Phillips was confronting them.
And another point that keeps getting missed in this Monday-morning quarterbacking is that the main kid in question, Nathan Sandmann, was even more diplomatic than we thought. Not only did he just stand there and smile while Phillips beat a drum in his face, he actively told another kid behind him to stop arguing with another Native American adult, then pulled him away and they both walked off. What an aggressor!
I am also tired of hearing how “everyone knows” the Black Hebrew Israelites are a hateful group that hurls insults at everyone. Several media personalities have said that they have been confronted by the BHI “all the time” in NY and DC. Well cool story bro, now tell me how a bunch of teenagers from Kentucky are supposed to know anything about them or should have ever encountered them before.

Vietnam Times Veteran- loosely translated that he was alive during the Vietnam War. Vietnam War Era Veteran can imply military service prior to 1977 I believe but I dont think translates to seeing combat or active duty in Vietnam. In any event he definitely seems to misrepresent himself.

And that is why, even had they done worse, they should have been cut some slack. Teenagers are, after all, teenagers. An attack against any kid that age for anything should take that into account. But as teens, parents need to remember that the job is always to teach, even when things are done mostly right. I would hope the school too would make the most of this opportunity. It is a great chance to teach how to improve through analyzing the past.
BTW, I still do this as an adult (at my job). Even in when engaged in an incident with a pretty decent outcome, those involved gather to see what was done right, and what could be improved. Again, this seems to be something deficient in Mr. Phillips. He went on to see how to spin it, build on it, and up the ante, not considering his own shortcomings. Unfortunately, holding himself as a representative of Native Americans, he harms the image of those he means to represent.

To be fair I don’t think Mr. Phillips arrest record from 40yrs age has much bearing on his actions recently. He has demonstrated quite well in the last 4 days that he is an unrealible person at best, and a liar.

As one who organized and/or was a chaperon on well over 100 field trips, I believe the chaperons made a mistake by not moving the kids to a more secured location nearby and telling the students to not respond to any provocation.
Safety has to be #1 on such outings as we don’t want children to be put in harm’s way regardless as to whom may cause what, especially since “emotional contagion” can often quite quickly ramp-up a situation, thus possibly leading to hostilities. In all the filed trips I organized or was involved in, including two in D.C., I never had a single incident anywhere near what we see with the videos.
