I am old enough to need a moisturizer, but still have something of a problem with oily skin. The moisturizer that I find that works the best is Oil of Olay Total Effects. It gives me just the right amount of moisture without being greasy. For a facial scrub and cleanser I like the “Invigorating” line from Neutrogena since it is the best combination of a deep yet gentle cleanser.

For body lotion I like something with a nice scent like the Citrus Ginger line from Bath & Body works. Since I wear sandals almost everyday year round, keeping my feet looking nice is important to me, and I like the lotions and exfoliants they have at Body Works.

For makeup I find that Almay is a nice alternative to Clinique.

Olive oil actaully works well on all skin types…it is absorbed into the skin without an oily reisude left on your skin
Good to know! 😃 I don’t need any help in the greaseball category…oily skin runs in my family…

I think I’ll try what aboverubies was suggesting with the oil and adding in essential oil. See if my face will soak that up! 😃

Anyone tried Cetaphil for face wash?? A friend said a dermatologist recommended it to her…

Cetaphil Daily Cleanser for Normal to Oily skin. I also like the orginal Cetaphil Gentle skin Cleanser. The former is better at removing makeup and the latter I use on winter mornings;
** Neutrogena Alcohol Free toner** - morning and evening;
Olay Complete, unscented - morning only and I’ve used **Aveeno Radiant **something, it’s fragranced so I don’t care for it so much (both have broad spectrum sunscreen);
I sometimes like to use a moisturizer in the evening and use what ever I have handy.

Cetaphil is the most spendy of the bunch (about $8-10 per 16 oz. bottle) but one needs so little so it goes along way. I like all of these because they are gentle, effective, and reasonably priced. I often experiment with other products but end up coming back to these. And for reference I have oily skin with sporadic dry patches, still acne prone (hormones) but mostly clear skin. I attribute that to my skin care because it keeps my skin clean without freaking it out using harsh products.

ETA: I also rally like Alpha Hydrox lotion with 10% alpha hydroxy; I’ll use it at night . If my skin starts breaking out this helps. I also use Nature’s Cure body spray on my back after each shower.

I’ll add another plug for the Olay Daily Facials cloths. I use one at night, and the Olay foaming gel cleanser in the morning (both for combination/oily skin). I follow it up with Clinique’s famous yellow lotion. Sure, that stuff’s a bit pricey but I spend $20 or whatever on the large bottle and it lasts both me and DH a few months. My skin is pretty clear unless I’m under stress or there’s a big weather change. Those breakouts clear up quickly, though.

For body moisturizers, I like Bath and Body Works scented lotions, and the new vanilla-scented Curel I bought last week. Revlon has good eye shadows, Maybelline has good mascara and eyeliner, Almay and Neutrogena have good foundation-type makeup. I won’t skimp on lips, though- I’ll only buy Clinique lipstick.

For the bod I love Aveeno body wash (light blue cap) and lotion (dark green cap), especially in the dry winter months. And I use a body pouf with any body wash or soap.

“Tools” can make a difference. I have a skin towel from the Body Shop, it’s about 36 inches long and about 12 wide - it makes a great back scrubber and will work as a pouf in a pinch. And I like to use exfoliating gloves regularly (but not all the time). I had a special washcloth that was extra gentle on the face. I got it at Bed Bath and Beyond and an area co-op. I lost both of mine and my exfoliating towel a few weeks ago (doing laundry). :crying:
And I have one of these to apply lotion to my back. Keep it clean and it won’t transfer bacteria from your hands ( or anyone else’s) to the skin on your back.

I know SPF is really important, but I’m allergic. 😦 The only thing I’ve found that doesn’t turn my face red and then start peeling is the Clinique floating SPF (thank you auntie!). 👍
Sounds like you may have a mild case of rosacea (I do, too). Over the last 5 years or so, I have tried tons and tons of different products, but most of them made my skin really “angry” (redder and bumpier) after using them for a few weeks … especially ones with suncreen.

I finally found one which seems to be working well … I’ve been using it for six months, and my skin is much better. After using it for 2 or 3 weeks, I looked in the mirror one morning and thought, "wow, I look so pale … " and for a moment I was worried … then I realized that I was pale because the redness on my face had decreased so much! 😃

The product line is Aveeno Ultra-Calming (you can find it at Target or drugstores). I’ve been using the face wash & the night cream (during the day, lol) for about 6 months. My skin isn’t perfect, but it’s LOTS better than before. I was so wary of suncreen that I didn’t even try the day cream (with sunscreen) until recently … I’ve used it a couple of times and not had a problem, but I can’t vouch for it yet, it’s too soon … but the night cream has been great for me.

Best of luck in finding something that works for you 🙂

If you have sensitive skin I would stay away from any thing with alpha-hydroxy in it. I know, I sell Avon and they were the first to introduce alpha-hydroxy in their products (it is a great wrinkle reducer!) but can not use many of the products.

PM me if you want more info. about Avon products as I don’t feel comfortable using the public forum for selling products 😃 I can help anyone figure out what they can use - even off the shelf products if that is where you want to go with it. I used to use almond oil and might go back to that. Also if you are sensitive to sunscreens you might consider using other methods of blocking that sun from your face - like big brimmed hats.

Believe it or not, people with sun-sensitive skin should be using suncreen all the time, even indoors under fluorescent lighting … my dermatologist told me that fluorescents produce UV rays, which I had not realized previously.

Nope, no rosacea…I’m paaaaale. I used to get asked if I was sick I’m so white…hahahha!! And that’s without sunscreen! (Funny though, I don’t really burn…maybe it’s the Alaska thing? Trying to blend in with the snow???). 😉

That’s great you found stuff that works! I have a friend that has rosacea and can’t get rid of it…I’ll have to mention the Aveeno next time I see her! :yup: Cool beans!

I must be the odd ball on the face of earth…I’m so white that a lot of the Ivory (or whatever shade is the lightest in whatever line of make-up) would be too dark! And until I spent some time in the lower 48 (born and raised in Alaska…living up here now) I didn’t even know I could get a tan! Went to Oklahoma for a while and was BROWN in about a week…must be the Cherokee genes buried in there somewhere! Came back to AK and the tan wore off and am pale again! hahahaha It was a real nice tan, too!

I hadn’t thought about fluorescents giving of UV’s - that’s a good point. We have full spectrum lighting in our place (hey, it’s dark a lot of the year up here…gotta get around that somehow). 😉

I hadn’t even started wearing anything with an spf in it until last year (or at least trying to). Hopefully it won’t bite me in the backside in the long run…so far everyone thinks I’m younger than I am (30 is SOON - AH!!!).

  1. Take all your make up off.
  2. Get a white washcloth, wet it under hot water (not scalding hot, but as hot as your skin can stand)
  3. wring out the excess water and place the entire cloth over your face and leave it there a few seconds. You are opening your pores.
  4. Now that your pores are open, wash with a m-i-l-d soap (purpose or cetaphil). Note: Dove is NOT a mild soap!! Olay facials may be - I’d check with a dermatologist.
  5. rinse with very warm water, 10-15 times.
  6. Now rinse with cold water, 10-15 times. Now you have closed your pores and your face feels great.
If needed, follow with a good moisturizer.

The end. 🙂

That sounds like a good idea, I’ll try it 🙂

Speaking of pores, the peel-off pore strips seem to work well … although it’s a bit scary to see what they pull out!

I have had Rosacea for about 4 years now, and I’m still trying to find anything that will not irritate. Aveeno Ultra-Calming day cream with SPF is something I’ve been using, hasn’t seemed to improve my redness like I was hoping. I didn’t think about the SPF itself possibly being an irritant. My skin is pretty oily, but flaky due to the Rosacea, so using something specifically to moisturize doesn’t seem to be necessary for me, I was going more for the sunscreen aspect, and now that may actually be a culprit!

I’ve just recently started using Neutrogena transparent facial bar, fragrance free, for cleansing, can’t tell if it’s working yet, although I don’t feel my skin tingle or burning after use. I’ve been using cotton facial pads instead of wash clothes to help cut down on irritation.

Haven’t found a good makeup yet. Tried foundation powders by Neutrogena, Almay, Covergirl, none have helped, (I need to stay in the inexpensive range 😉 ). Tried the Mineral powders (not inexpensive 😦 ), couldn’t get enough coverage with those.

I do know that using AlphaHydroxy of any variety can actually start the Rosacea process, or anything that can really irritate the skin, like benzoil peroxide, that’s what happened with me. I can’t use anything now that has to do with acne treatments or wrinkle reducers as they cause me real problems anymore.

And using really hot water is absolutely a no no with Rosacea as it immediately inflames the skin.

So, anyone else out there with Rosacea that has had any kind of success with cleansers and makeup - please pass along the info! If you get a cleanser that works and a makeup that doesn’t, or vice versa, you can’t tell which is the culprit. It’s very discouraging. You have to have the perfect combination, I haven’t come up with it yet.

I am allergic to just about everything in the cosmetic-toiletry line. since moving down here I have used locally produced 100% aloe vera on my skin with great results, and tea tree lotion for rashes, irritations etc. The aloe outlet has an organic fragrence free color free body wash that I use as shampoo, also, and seldom have flareups. I mostly avoid the mid-day sun since meds make me very sun sensitive, and always were long sleeves and hats outside, but when I do need sunscreen I use Avon, which causes least sensitivity.

Hey, a plug for the Aussies sounds good to me! One of my best friends is an Aussie…from Cessnock. Have any Tim Tams? I love those! She brought some when she visited last time…
Just had a Tim Tam dose today :o my excuse is they were brought by our priest when he came over for lunch today and it would have been rude to refuse! 👍 and down right un-Australian! 😛

Sounds like you’re in the same catch-22 that I’ve experienced: we need sunscreen to try to avoid flareups, and yet many sunscreens seems to irritate our skin and make the problem worse 😦

I haven’t used the Aveeno day cream enough to recommend it, but I have used the Aveeno **night **cream during the day with good success. It took maybe 2 or 3 weeks for me to see a real difference in redness. Not perfect, but much better than before.

Some people swear by sea buckthorn (a source here: bluesagenaturals.com/ ). I tried it, and it didn’t really work for me, although it sure made my skin soft 🙂

Here’s a rosacea support forum if you’re interested. Everyone there is pretty much going through the same trial-and-error approach (so much money wasted trying stuff to find out which will help, or at least not make it worse):

health.groups.yahoo.com/group/rosacea-support/messages

Also, Clinique has a new product out called Redness Relief that I’ve been dithering about trying. It’s really expensive, but if it works, I think it would be worth it:

clinique.com/templates/products/sp_nonshaded.tmpl?CATEGORY_ID=CATEGORY4915&PRODUCT_ID=PROD6017

Anyway, best of luck to you 🙂 And if you find something outstanding, I hope you’ll let me know 🙂

interesting thread 😃

i don’t know if anyone mentioned this, but what about a home-made moisturizer for oily skin?

thx
