I haven’t used the Aveeno day cream enough to recommend it, but I have used the Aveeno **night **cream during the day with good success. It took maybe 2 or 3 weeks for me to see a real difference in redness. Not perfect, but much better than before.
If it doesn’t have the spf I’m not sure if I really need it, my skin is very oily. Unless, of course, it helps with the flakiness. Very strange situation, it has me stumped! :yup:
Some people swear by sea buckthorn (a source here: bluesagenaturals.com/ ). I tried it, and it didn’t really work for me, although it sure made my skin soft :).
I’ve used this myself, quite expensive. It cleansed without irritating, but didn’t seem to improve the redness. I found it at the grocery store behind the pharmacy counter.
Here’s a rosacea support forum if you’re interested. Everyone there is pretty much going through the same trial-and-error approach (so much money wasted trying stuff to find out which will help, or at least not make it worse):

health.groups.yahoo.com/group/rosacea-support/messages

Also, Clinique has a new product out called Redness Relief that I’ve been dithering about trying. It’s really expensive, but if it works, I think it would be worth it:

Anyway, best of luck to you 🙂 And if you find something outstanding, I hope you’ll let me know 🙂
Thanks for the links. I will check them out. And if I find anything worth trying, I will pass on the info!

I like Arbonne skin care and cosmetics. They can be expensive but for me it’s worth it because it works so well for me. They are all natural (no mineral oils or gross stuff) and fragrance free. The daily cleanser is wonderful. They’re great for sensitive skin. Give 'em a look see. 🙂

If you don’t want to spend the money on Arbonne than probably Cetaphil is the best drugstore cleanser out there. Happy shopping! 🙂

I take skin care, especially my face seriously and I’ve tried it all and spent tonnes of money in the process of learning what’s best for my skin. I have used the drug store brands like Neutrogena as well as high end department store brands like Chanel all the way to the European brands only available at spas. And you know what I have found to be the best even though I wouldn’t have believed it until my SIL convinced me to give it a try, it is the Proactiv Solution line. So far it’s doing a great job. I usually switch things up after 6 months so I don’t know what I’ll go to next, but I really do recommend it. You can get a set that includes the cleanser, moisturizer, lightening lotion and toner for $70 which is a pretty good deal and should last you three months.

According to my doctor, proactiv doesn’t have anything else all the other brands have except for a higher level of benzoyl peroxide. He said it’s too expensive for that small difference…??

Soap and water. That’s about it. Do we need all this stuff ladies?
My face seems clean enough to me.

Soap is too harsh for many and leaves behind a residue necessiating the use of a toner. I use a toner but wouldn’t need one for residue. In addition to being gentle, Cetaphil cleansers don’t leave behind a residue. Soaps (pretty much anything in bar form) and some creamy cleansers leave behind a residue which can clog pores. If one’s skin is sensitive this residue can be irritating. The drying effects or soap can exacerbate this.

That’s it in a nutshell. But make sure the soap you are using is gentle. Dove, dial, etc are not gentle. Purpose and Cetaphil are two that I know of.

You are right. Cetaphil is good and so is Purpose.

If anybody wants really good advice about how to take care of their skin, go see a dermatologist. Most of them will tell you - at least mine did - that if you use any soap at all use a mild gentle one like purpose or cetaphil. (we were specifically talking about facial skin here!)

You don’t need these 5 or 7 step cleansing processes.

You are right. A dermatologist is going to give you great advise but most of us don’t need to see one for every day kind of skin care 😉 .

As far as 5 or 7 steps, yikes, that is a lot. Most people really only need a good gentle cleanser (Cetaphil being a good drug-store/store one) and a good moisturizer. When I was young I used Oil of Olay - they used to have just one moisturizer now you have to practically have a degree (Doctorate ) to figure it out. Any way, anything that is not a cleanser, toner or moisturizer should be considered a treatment. Of course, some of us decide to use something different on our eye areas than the rest of our face (the skin is far more delicate there) but for the most part you are looking at someone who uses a cleanser/toner in one product, an SPF moisturizer and and eye cream. That is it. I use it only once a day, anything more and my face will either be too dry or end up with too much moisturizer on it (yes, I am the Avon rep. :D). I have been known to talk someone out of a product they though they needed.

Please do not use soap on your face unless it’s some of the brands that people have mentioned like Cetaphil. The only soap I ever use on my face is a soap I buy online from Amazon or Ebay that comes from France (Savon de Marsielles is excellent) because they still use the old way of making soap which does not take out all the moisturizing qualities and the soaps are triple-milled (makes a big difference - some Crabtree and Eveyln soap is triple-milled but the bars are too small and too expensive compared to what I get online from France). Yes I spend too much time researching skin care but I have a good reason! They say to look at your mother’s skin for an idea of how your skin will look when you age. My mom is a soap and water for cleaning, Vaseline cream for moisturizing and no SPF day-time moisturizer. She doesn’t smoke and she eats well but her skin is awful. It looks dry, lots of brown spots and is more wrinkled than her sister who is older by eight years and who has always taken good care of her skin. My mom used to grumble that that my aunt wasted too much time fussing about her skin (and makeup) but now my mom gripes about looking older than her older sister. Drinking lots of water is important for skin as well. And although some people don’t like the 7 step regime, I do recommend an eye cream as the skin there is more delicate. I could talk about skin care for almost as long as I can talk about religion!

Hey Ladies 😃 Wow! I didn’t expect this much of a response! This is great! I can’t believe how much I’ve learned!

Ok, so far from all of this I’ve gathered: gentle face wash, toner if needed, natural products are best, different stuff under eyes.

I took an earlier suggestion of sweet almond oil and lavender essential oil…started using it Friday… My skin is softer than it’s ever been!! This is so cool! It absorbs really well (even though I have oily skin!). 😃 This is the part I don’t get…my pores are WAY smaller!! They’ve always been huge!! My mom has had me try a bunch of stuff…none of it made them shrink really…ugh. I haven’t done anything different except that oil instead of a bottle of face lotion!

Sticking with the toner I’ve been using (taught by a frugal friend)…witch hazel, purified water, rosewater. It’s cheap and there’s no alcohol or chemicals…works for me!

So, last but not least…what am I supposed to put on the skin right under my eyes?? I don’t want those lines!

Thanks again for all your help and advice!!! Keep it comin’ 😃

For body soap, I only use Kiss My Face brand soap. It’s a little pricier than drug store ($2.50 for a big bar, which lasts about a month), but my dry skin has nearly vanished. For face care, I have major oil and adult acne, so I use a combination of L’Oreal acne products. They work really well for me.

Yes, yes, yes! Water is SO important! Not soda, not sweet drinks, but plain WATER 🙂

I notice a huge difference in my skin when I drink plenty of water. And water intake is also very important for anyone who is trying to lose weight 🙂

Now this sounds really interesting 🙂 Can you tell us what proportion you used in mixing the two? How many parts lavender to how many parts sweet almond oil, or however you did it? 🙂

I’m a bit leery of the lavender … I love the smell (I have some wonderful lavender shampoo from France) but it’s VERY powerful stuff … and scented stuff on my face usually causes problems. Maybe a tiny bit in a lot of sweet almond oil? 🙂

If scents are hard on your face you can actually just use the almond oil. You should be able to get that in bulk at any health food store (try Wild Oats, Sunflower or Whole Foods).

The witchhazel is a great astringent which is the main ingredient in most toners (astringents). It can be harsh on sensitive skin though.

For around your eyes, look for products that are marketed just for that (I do think that the plain almond oil would be okay but it won’t reduce wrinkles). There are other ingredients to look for for wrinkle reducing ingredients but most are not in the “natural” category. I personally use Avon’s “Anew Clinical Eye-Lift” every other day or so - it has two products in one jar and I have been using the same jar for two+ months at $28.00 a jar it is pricey unless you look at how long it lasts (so far I am looking at less than $14.00 a month). I have other customers who needed a new jar after three months and were really happy with it.

BTW, Dove (in bar form) is the product my mom’s dermatologist told her to use - it is the gentlest beauty bar on the market! The Sensitive skin one is the only one I personally can use and my daughter who has eczema finds it to be the best for her showers. Now Ivory and any of the deoderant bars are extremely harsh on my skin.

Of course when I make my own soap (I make castille soap with pure olive oil) I have the least amount of problems but that takes days and the need for a nice flat spot in the house with no cats/kittens thinking about running over the containers (no safe place in my house right now with my other daughter’s cat).

I didn’t think of this before, but a soap I’ve found to be very gentle is plain glycerine soap – I buy this in two-pound blocks (at arts and crafts supply stores), and use it for melt-and-pour soapmaking, but it can be used just the way it is – just carve off a soap bar-sized piece. It has no color or perfume in it, but the natural fragrance is very nice.

For moisturiser I just use a nice base oil like sweet almond or macadamia and add lavender essential oil. Inexpensive, no chemicals and I don’t have to pay for a big cosmetics company’s advertising bill! 👍 I also use this on my little ones after their bath - they smell so gorgeous. 🙂

I think it works better than any “name” moisturiser I’ve brought…the theory is that since it is basically a food, the skin recognises it and truly absorbs it into the skin. Products containing petrochemicals (pretty much everything on the shelf not stipulated “organic”) are not recognised by our bodies and therefore sit on top of the skin. …
I agree with this advice for the very finest moisterizer - and at the lowest price! A great many of those tiny, pricey tubes and jars of moisteizers have a petroleum or mineral oil base! So they’re not good for your skin. And, they don’t work as well as nourishing real oils, closest to the way God made them.

I have been meaning to try macadamia nut oil sometime. I use sweet almond oil too, and also I use shea butter. Both are from the health food store. Big jars or bottles at a fraction of the price of department-store hyped, magazine and TV-advertised tiny ones.

The almond oil is an oil; the shea butter, more like a butter. Sometimes if the shea butter gets too cold too fast, it gets a grainy texture, and then just has to be heated. Coconut oil is the same. If it gets grainy I place the jar on my radiator for the day or night, which liquifes it, and then it rehardens to its nice smooth consistency. Shea butter absorbs into the skin really fast which is nice.

My skin is normal to dry. A really interesting book I perused at a big book store was called “The Skin Type Solution”. Its really interesting to look thru and find and read all about your type (there are so many!) and see its specific care reccommendations. And its much cheaper than a dermatologist visit (its written by one)!

Trader Joe’s sells a lavender and calmomile liquid soap called
“. . . Next to Godliness”. I use it on my face w/ good results so far. —KCT
