I just wanted to thank everyone for their comments and advice. What i’ve realised in all this is that i know absolutely nothing about my own church’s history. When faced with the Missionary’s statements I can’t say anything because of my ignorance so thats my mission now, to study the Catholic history. So thanks again I’ll continue to read the threads here for the wealth of information and just to put a smile on my face :bowdown2:
Hi melmac,

That’s exactly the correct reaction to a challenge from any religious group - go back and learn your own faith. 👍 I wish I had been so wise when the Mormons found me.

God love you,
Paul

Why not sign-up for RCIA? Lots of Catholics do that for a refresher. You’ll meet some cool new people and it’ll probably be a very good experience.
Talking to the missionaries will do her a lot more good! 😃

Thats a great idea. The RCIA idea I mean. 🙂

Z, Might you consider attending an RCIA class? They usually begin late summer to early fall. That gives you plenty of time to think about it, Maybe by then you’ll be ready. :gopray2:

Peace,
Tami

Zerinus,

Everything that I quoted (with the exception one, which came from a Mormon blog) were from the official site of the Mormons – LDS.org.

Joseph Smith was a fraud and to say that the church fell into apostasy and had to be reinvented in the 19th century is calling Christ a liar. He clearly stated in the Bible (for which you can thank the Catholic Church, BTW) that the gates of hell would NEVER prevail against the church. To say that it did and that Christ waited over 1,800 years to rectify the problem is, quite frankly, asinine.

I just ran across a book that I’ve had for years that might also of interest. I had completely forgotten about it until I was cleaning the bookcase, decided which books have got to go and which ones can stay (I have waaaaaaaaayyyyy too many books!)

As my good friend Olive (who left the LDS with me) says, if you don’t stand for something you will fall for anything. Knowledge is always one of the best defenses.

Blessed be,

zerinus,

False! We believe that Christ is God.
Do you believe that Christ is the one and only God, or do you believe that Christ was a man that became a God?

False! The Holy Trinity very much does exist; but the Holy Trinity of the Bible, not the false Trinity of Apostate Christendom.
is the Holy Trinity one God or three?

False! Be wary of Mormon apostates and anti-Mormons! the LDS church has called all of Christendom Apostate and when we defend our beliefs we are called anti-mormon this is just not right

Why can’t mormons define these terms for themselves? It’s not uncommon between protestant denominations to have disagreements in these areas. Don’t you still consider them christian.

Hi I’ve been recently visited by 2 mormon missionary’s and invited to their church. The people are friendly, very earnest in their beliefs. My dilemma is that i like these people and their friendship but the more i learn about this religion the more farfetched it seems. I feel i don’t have the right to “put down” someone else’s beliefs. The missionarys have an answer to all my questions so much so it leaves my head swimming. The forum seems a great place to put forward opinions, but I’m dealing face to face and i don’t know what to say. I’m a little worried of getting in to deep because the community spirit is so enticing. Any ideas people?
**First of all, as the same with JWs or other denominations with a door-to-door ministry, Mormons will also be friendly and very earnest with their beliefs. I would hardly call it a ‘friendship’ because it is only superficial - the friendship is extended only because of the possibility of you joining up. Say no and they will drop you like a lead balloon, as will the others.

Those with door-to-door ministry count on face-to-face encounters because they know that the average person is very weak in countering them. They have all the ‘right’ verses picked out which are very hard to reply to or verses that actually need a great deal of thought to reply to, although they can break it down to one of their arguments simply.

Door-to-door ministers also count on presenting an attractive “community spirit” as they know most average people are not active in their own church community, so it is very easy to move them in that direction if the person feels a true need to ‘belong’.

If you are happy with your religion then my opinion would be that the next time they come to your door, tell them so, thank them for talking with you, and tell them that you are Catholic and am happy with your Church. They will go away and never come back - guaranteed!**

Melmac: I’m so excited for you for signing up with the choir!!!
I love our choir! Music is such a wonderful prayer to our Lord!!!

Thanks Kristine i went last night i’d been so excited till about half an hour before it started and than i got so nervous. I really have only ever sung in the shower and danced around the loungeroom. This was a major step for me i did feel out of my league. I couldn’t hear myself once everyone started singing felt very foolish. Everyone was very encouraging as i was leaving the organist thanked me for coming and said “see you next week” I asked if he was sure he wanted to and he said “yes of course”. Well I gave them a chance to back out and they didn’t take it so I guess their stuck with me:rotfl:

Mormon’s can and do define these terms for themselves; however,
when the LDS says Holy Trinity and Orthodox Christianity says Holy Trinity we mean two different things.
To have a discussion about anything we must 1st “define our terms”, this is a simple rule of logic, and that is all I am asking for, we must frist agree on what we are saying when we say “Holy Trinity” before we can disscuss it.
We could define the Orthodox Holy Trinity and the LDS Holy Trinity then we can have a real disscussion about the issue. so I invite you MaHE… or zerinus to define your terms so we can have a disscussion

here you are just wrong
Protestants do not disagree on the Holy Trinity, we are in complete agreement with the Roman Catholic Church, and the Eastern Orthodox Church, on this matter. Protestant denominations have disagreements about things like Baptism, (do we fully submerge? or can we sprinkle? etc)

but to answer your question if a denomination does not believe in the Orthodox Holy Trinity, and that Jesus Christ is the 2nd person of the Holy Trinity that he was crucified, he died, and on the 3rd day rose from the grave; then no they are not a Christian Protestant denomination.

I appreciate your candid response and your fairness in labeling Unitarian Protestant churches as non-christian. I do believe you would be surprised at the foundational differences between Protestant churches.

I have no real interest in discussing the doctrines of the Mormon church. I am very interested in understanding the beliefs (and reasons behind them) of the Catholic church. I am fascinated by the depth of teachings and history the church has and the vast difference between the Catholic church and most other churches. It is fascinating that Catholics read the same Bible as Protestants and land in such a different place.
